Squat is one of those extremely common exercises everybody can do… Or at least we like to think so. Just because everyone’s heard of it doesn’t mean everyone knows how to do it. We’re constantly making mistakes while squatting without even being aware of it. Here’s five you should pay extra close attention to.

Getting up on your toes

It’s crucial to keep your heels down while doing squats unless you want to lose your foundation. You should rest your weight on your heels, not your toes – this is where most of your power comes from.

Staying high

To accomplish maximal thigh development, you should go as low as possible, but most people resort to doing shallow squats. In reality, your thighs should at least be parallel with the floor while doing this exercise.

Dropping too fast

If you’re not a big fan of squats, you probably want to be done with them ASAP, but they take patience. You’ll get better results if you lower your body steadily and really let yourself feel the pressure.

Knees collapsing inwards

Your knees shouldn’t cave inwards while you’re squatting or pass over the toes. Those who lack mobility and strength will make this mistake, but it can be avoided with a little bit of focus.

Dismissing your upper body

It’s easy to forget squats involve your upper back, but having proper tightness in this part of the body is integral to maintaining good form. Keeping your back flat is especially difficult when you’re doing barbell squats, but that’s when it’s more important than ever.
