We know, the idea of getting out of your warm bed only to subject your body to icy water may not sound like the most appealing way to start your day, but hear us out. Recent research is suggesting that there are numerous benefits of immersing in cold water. While you will receive the benefits regardless of which time of day you shower, this practice does tend to have an invigorating effect, and so we recommend it as something to do in the morning rather than right before bed. Even ending your regular shower with 30 seconds to a minute of cold water can be enough if you’re curious, but not quite ready for the full-length thing.

Improves Circulation

Cold water on your skin stimulates blood flow to your internal organs by temporarily constricting circulation on the surface so that blood is directed toward deeper tissues. This can reduce inflammation and help keep your skin clear as well.

Lowers Cortisol

Cortisol is also known as “the stress hormone,” as our bodies tend to make more of it when we experience stressful situations. Over time, high levels of cortisol can lead to things like acne, fatigue, and “brain fog,” or difficulty concentrating. Some studies have shown that up to 3 minutes of a cold shower can help reduce cortisol levels. You’ll be wide awake and ready for the day.

Immersing yourself in icy cold water might not sound like much fun, but in fact cold water therapy has been shown to improve the body’s general functioning and performance. Here are five rejuvenating health benefits to expect if you decide to take the plunge.

Improves Blood Circulation

Good cardiovascular circulation is crucial to a healthy mind and body. When you immerse yourself in cold water, rich oxygenated blood rushes to your vital organs and is pumped all around your body. You can expect a boost in energy levels and mental performance, and a decrease in stress, fatigue, high blood pressure, and muscle cramping.

Strengthens the Lymphatic and Immune Systems

The lymphatic system is a network of blood vessels that evacuate waste and bacteria from your cells. Coldwater immersion stimulates the lymphatic system, allowing it to cleanse the body by flushing out toxins and unhealthy substances. This in turn improves your body’s ability to fight off illness.

Reduces Muscle Inflammation

By causing the blood vessels to contract, cold water immersion soothes muscle and joint pain, reduces inflammation and brings down swelling.

Instils a Sense of Wellbeing

While it might sound counter-intuitive, bathing in cold water has been shown to improve your mood and boost energy levels. The cold water releases a flood of endorphins that make you feel happy, relaxed, and energetic.

Resets Your Temperature Regulating System

If you are someone that feels cold all the time, this is likely due to a combination of poor circulation and body temperature regulation. In the modern world, many of us have lost the ability to naturally regulate our body’s temperature. Paradoxically, if you routinely bathe in cold water, better blood flow will increase body temperature and reset your temperature regulation system.
