When people hear the word “arthritis”, they mostly think of creaky bones, but the condition actually comes in many forms. Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis caused by uric acid that has crystallized. The result is intense pain and swelling. The best way to keep gout at bay is to consume foods with low levels of purine. Here are some foods that you should avoid if you’re prone to this uncomfortable condition.

Red Meat

Gout and red meat are not friends, so you might want to reconsider that steak. The levels of purine in beef, lamb, and liver are super high which is a surefire way to trigger a flare.

Seafood

There may be plenty of fish in the sea, but there are some that you should definitely let swim on by. Shrimp, lobster, and crab are bright red warning flags as they contain a lot of purines. That said, you can still enjoy salmon and tuna if you want to get your fishy fix.

Oatmeal

The breakfast of champions can quickly turn into a breakfast of doom for gout sufferers. There is 50-150 mg of purines per 100 grams of oatmeal. As oatmeal doesn’t contain as many purines as other foods, you don’t have to totally cut it out, but it’s recommended that you limit your weekly servings to two.
