When you’re feeling sick, it sometimes feels like nothing will help. Yet, according to science, there may be something that can improve your health alongside medication.

As those who had COVID will know, being ill can be an incredibly isolating experience. Oftentimes you are stuck in your home (or worse, at the hospital) and totally devoid of human interaction. But, as a new study suggests, social connection in the form of a phone call can help you heal quicker.

The study published in the Journal of Cardiac Failure found that patients with heart failure who received phone calls from nurses had an increased chance of survival.

Millennials and Gen-Z may balk at the thought of talking on the phone, but science has proven that just one quality conversation can reduce stress and improve mood.

A study from the Journal of Experimental Psychology evaluated whether all types of communication had the same level of benefit. Verbal communication over phone and video calls led to stronger social bonds compared to texting. It also greatly lowers the risk of misinterpretation caused by reading without tone.

So next time you get a call, answer instead of letting it go to voicemail.
