Have you heard about shaking meditation, the newest meditation technique to clear your mind? Also known as tension and trauma releasing exercises (TRE), the technique involves movements to encourage your muscles to quiver to release stress from your body. Trauma expert David Berceli created the exercise after seeing the way children reacted in a bomb shelter and how the exercises activate natural reflexes that release tension in the muscles and calm the nervous system.

TRE started as a way to help people with PTSD, but it’s since become a traditional meditation practice for athletes to help with muscle recovery. It can also be used to deal with stress, anxiety, and sleep issues.

The TRE exercises start with movements to tire out the lower body muscles like calf raises and wall squats. After that you lie on your back with the bottom of your feet together to create a diamond shape. When you’re in this position, lift your pelvis into a bridge position and hold it for a minute. Then put your pelvis back on the floor and bring your legs together slowly inch by inch and pausing for a few moments each time. By the third or fourth time you bring your legs together, you may notice they’ll start to shake. That’s what you want to happen and the tremors will move up your body into your arms and torso. When you’re body is done shaking, extend your legs fully and rest them.

Typically, the warm-up is around 20 minutes, 20 minutes are for the tremors, and 20 minutes are for rest and conversation. After a few sessions with an instructor, you should be able to practice the techniques on your own.
