If you’ve been working out regularly in the long-term, for over a year or longer, you might have experienced some of the following:

  • Feeling bored by your workouts
  • Having a hard time motivating yourself to go to the gym
  • Beginning to see fitness as a lower and lower priority
  • Often feeling run-down, tired, and weak

If so, these are all signs that you might be experiencing fitness burnout or workout burnout. It’s normal and happens to all of us if we’re consistently working out for long enough, but it’s still frustrating, especially if you want to find a way to move forward with your fitness routine but are having a harder and harder time doing it. So if this is your experience, here are some tips.

Switch Things Up

No matter how great and effective your workout is, nobody is immune to getting bored of doing the same thing over and over again. If you want to get excited about fitness again, consider trying something new. Even if you go back to what you used to do, a change of pace can make a big difference.

Prioritize Recovery and Rest

One big cause of fitness burnout is going too hard and not resting enough. The truth is that many of us don’t give our bodies nearly as much time to recover as we need. So take a day off. Do some active recovery. Get a massage. It’s all going to help you be able to work out sustainably in the long term.

Working out on a regular basis comes with a long list of benefits, but there comes a time when you’ve had too much of a good thing. Working out too often and pushing yourself too hard may lead to workout burnout, and these are the most common signs of overload that you should look out for.

No Motivation

Lack of motivation is the most common sign of burnout. It’s pretty much impossible to enjoy your fitness routine in this state, and fully committing to it is more difficult than ever.

Performance Drop

Overtraining rarely leads to better performance that you’re hoping to achieve. Overload will make it difficult to focus and feel motivated for your workout, ironically leading to an eventual drop in performance.

Fatigue

Constant exhaustion is also a common sign of workout overload, especially if it’s paired with a disrupted sleep pattern that makes it even more difficult to get proper rest.

Appetite Decrease

The feeling of fatigue and lack of motivation may also be followed by a decrease in appetite. Diminished appetite and overtraining are a very bad combo because you won’t be fueling up your body with a sufficient amount of food.

Emotional State

Workout burnout can reflect on your mental health as well. If you’re constantly moody, stressed out, anxious, and irritable, it may be because you’re physically overloaded.

Even if you’re someone who’s set in your routines, you can also get burnt out. Fitness burnout can happen for a variety of reasons—and here are some useful tips on how to overcome or prevent it.

Change The Scenery

Things can get boring pretty quickly if you run or walk the same route constantly, or you’re always using the same equipment for exercising. Make sure to mix things up a little to keep things interesting and avoid mental fatigue.

Take a Rest Day

It’s okay to take a rest day and do something interesting instead of going to the gym, even on days when you feel good. If you’re not in the mood for working out or you feel stressed out, do something that makes you feel good and relaxed.

Find a Workout Buddy

Whether you invite your friend for a run or making new friends at the gym, finding a workout buddy is always a great way to boost motivation and avoid burnout, because they’ll make the workouts more interesting.

Change Your Playlist

Music is one of the best ways to make your workouts better and uplifting, so make sure to find new workout songs and update your playlist every once in a while.
