The holidays may still be a few weeks away, but signs of the season have already begun to appear. From Christmas lights to Peppermint Mocha Lattes, these symbols of celebration have got us in the mood to start planning for the festivities, and this includes plenty of holiday shopping. For the yoga lovers in our lives, we’ve found a few gifts that we’re especially excited about. If you’ve got a yogi on your list, read on for some of our top picks.

For the Traveler Yogi

If the yogi on your list has a penchant for jet setting, a lightweight, compact yoga mat is one gift they’ll be thrilled to receive. Many companies make mats designed specifically for travel that fit easily inside a suitcase or carry-on bag—perfect to use at home or on the go. We love this vegan suede one by Circé Yoga.

For the Yin Yogi

Yin yoga involves holding poses for several minutes at a time to achieve a deep stretch, and many yogis use supportive props to make this more comfortable. While blocks are one of the more common props used, a good bolster can mean the difference between straining or being able to relax fully in certain poses. Try this cozy Crystal Bolster Pillow by Sunday Citizen.

For the Wellness Enthusiast

Essential oils are a great way to set the tone for any type of yoga practice. Restorative yogis can create a calming environment by diffusing certain oils like lavender and chamomile, while those who prefer a faster pace can try energizing options such as citrus and peppermint. This wood diffuser by Vorda will fit right in at home or in the studio.

With its focus on mindfulness, strength, and flexibility, yoga offers a holistic approach to fitness and well-being. However, many people wonder if they need to be flexible to practice yoga. In this post, we’ll debunk the common misconception surrounding flexibility in yoga and explore how everyone can benefit from yoga regardless of their current flexibility level.

Yoga is for Everyone

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to be naturally flexible or a contortionist to enjoy the benefits of yoga. Yoga is an inclusive practice designed for all body types and fitness levels. Each yoga pose can be modified to suit individual needs, making it accessible to both beginners and seasoned practitioners.

Yoga Improves Flexibility

One of the primary benefits of yoga is that it helps improve flexibility over time. Regular practice encourages the lengthening and stretching of muscles, tendons, and ligaments, promoting an increased range of motion and suppleness. Gradually, you’ll notice an improvement in your flexibility.

Flexibility is Not the Main Goal

Flexibility is just one aspect of yoga, and it’s not the ultimate goal. Yoga is a multifaceted practice that combines strength, balance, and mental focus with flexibility. Each yoga pose is designed to work on different parts of the body and enhance overall well-being.

Mindful Modifications

Yoga instructors are well-versed in guiding students through modifications to accommodate different body types and abilities. If you have limited flexibility or specific physical limitations, don’t be discouraged. A qualified yoga instructor can help you find variations of poses that work best for your body, ensuring a safe and enjoyable practice.

Embrace Your Journey

Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on your own growth and celebrate small milestones along the way. With consistent practice and patience, you’ll witness improvements in your flexibility and overall fitness.

Thinking of treating yourself to a wellness-boosting gift to kick off the year. Why not consider choosing a woven yoga rug to replace your plastic yoga mat? Yoga rugs are woven with organic cotton and other natural materials and can be an amazing way to transform your practice.

More Sustainable

Many yoga mats these days are made with non-renewable materials such as PVC and other plastics. Yoga rugs, on the other hand, are made with biodegradable, sustainably grown organic materials such as organic cotton or organic hemp.

Your yoga rug will also last much longer than a cheap, plastic mat, and could even be handed down through generations!

Sweat-Absorbing

If you sweat a lot during your yoga practice, you may find yourself slipping all over your mat. Yoga rugs are naturally sweat absorbing, meaning slippery hands won’t interrupt your flow.

Washable

It can be a faff to clean and dry a regular yoga mat. Yoga rugs are washable, making it easier to clean them, either in the washing machine or by hand. Many woven rugs also include ayurvedic herbs which give them natural antibacterial and antifungal properties. This means you only need to wash them every few months.

Better for Your Wellbeing

Treating yourself to a yoga rug can be an intentional step to deepening your yoga practice and boosting your wellbeing. Laying out a beautiful handwoven rug can feel more meaningful than rolling out your old mat. They are also free from potentially harmful plastics and chemicals, and many are woven with healing herbs.

A lot of the yogis we follow on Instagram are constantly wowing us with their ability to flip upside down into all kinds of incredible inversion poses. Inversions are yoga poses where you put your head below your heart and your hips.

Inversion poses can be very beneficial for our health and well-being, believed to relieve tension, improve circulation, increase strength and flexibility, and boost energy levels. However, they can be pretty tricky to master. If your headstand doesn’t seem to be improving and you’re feeling defeated, try these top tips.

Build Your Strength

You will need to be strong, flexible, and confident in your movements before you should try inversions. Build up your core and upper body strength through less visually impressive poses, like downward-facing dog, boat pose, and sun salutations.

If inversions are one of your goals, ask your yoga teacher which asanas to practice at home.

Learn the Way In & Out

Don’t try and throw yourself up into a headstand without learning how to get in and out of one. This can lead to injury, and also won’t give you the benefits of mastering the correct way to perform the pose. Ask for close instruction from your teacher, or watch detailed videos so you can learn exactly how your body needs to transition into the inversion.

Breathe

Breathing is key. During all your yoga practice, you should constantly be focusing on your breath, especially when doing a tricky inversion pose. If you realize you’re holding your breath, head into child’s pose and regain your focus before returning to the inversion.

Yoga is an amazing practice for our strength, flexibility, and mental well-being. But have you ever tried blindfolded yoga? Removing sight from your yoga session can bring new and unexpected benefits and it’s something every keen yogi should try.

Before you try this at home, try attending a blindfold yoga class. Your teacher will choose a sequence of movements especially suited to doing this kind of yoga, so you can practice safely and avoid injury.

Improve Your Concentration

Doing yoga blindfolded removes all other distractions so you can really focus on your movements and your breath. If you feel your mind drifting in regular yoga, try a blindfolded class and you’ll really feel the difference.

Improve Your Proprioception

Proprioception is your body’s way of sensing location, movement, and action. Blindfold yoga is a great way to improve your proprioception system and heighten senses other than sight.

Connect to Your Body

Blindfold yoga can help deepen your practice and enable you to connect to your body on a new level. By feeling your way through the asanas, you can improve your awareness, focus, and self-acceptance.

Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

It can be easy in a yoga class to watch the other participants and compare your body and your abilities. This can often lead to negative thoughts and disrupt the flow of your practice. By wearing a blindfold, you can focus only on yourself and not worry about how others are doing.

Yoga is about as trendy as something can be in our modern world of fitness and wellness trends. But while there are many who love yoga, there are also hordes of people who feel like they don’t fit into this trend. They’ll try yoga once or twice, observe everyone around them looking like real-world gumbies, and resign themselves to the fact that they’ll never be quite as flexible as them. Eventually, they give up on yoga altogether. If you’re one of those people, you should know that you can totally be just as flexible as everyone else.

It Just Takes Time

Like everything else in life, you won’t be able to achieve success in something if you give up after one or two tries. You need to push yourself, set realistic goals, and maybe even find a trainer who understands your limits and knows how to help you grow.

It’s Natural For You Too

You might think that everyone else was just born with a super-flexible body, but they worked at it as well. Sure, maybe it was easier for some than others. But it’s important for you to know that there’s nothing unnatural about you stretching your body out more. In fact, it’s completely natural. Your body just needs a bit more of a “push”—but you’ll get there if you just stick to it!

Yoga is one of those truly unique phenomenons that can improve your life drastically. The reason for this is that it somehow synchronizes the mind, body, and soul in such a way that doesn’t feel like overexertion. Sure, there are certain yoga poses that take a while to master, but nothing so egregious that you’ll feel like you never want to do it again. Let’s dive into why yoga is truly a godsend in the world of exercise and mental health.

Flexibility

A flexible body is a flexible mind, and if that sounds corny, we’re glad it does. Indeed, yoga requires you to push the limits of what you thought your body was capable of doing, and once you feel yourself overcoming certain bodily obstacles, you learn that you might just be able to overcome similar obstacles in your own mind.

The Zen Workout

The thing about yoga is that it’s kind of a workout, but also not really. It’s not super intense such as a rigorous run or a set of push-ups. It may force you to break a sweat, but it’s also zen, meditative, and relaxing. In that sense, it’s a great option for those who want to dip their toes into feeling good physically, but aren’t ready to go full workout just yet.

As more and more people are now working out at home, it’s becoming pretty clear that you can enjoy pretty much any activity this way—including yoga. If you’re thinking of building your own home yoga studio, but aren’t sure if you can afford it, these useful tips will help you do it for cheap.

Cheap Equipment

The great thing about the most common yoga equipment pieces is that they’re not extremely expensive. You can start things small by getting your own yoga mat before moving to yoga blocks, balance ball, yoga bolsters, and more. Even if you decide to buy some fancy pieces of equipment, they’ll still cost you less than a treadmill or exercise bike.

Virtual Trainer?

If doing yoga on your own isn’t an option and you need instructions, you can always turn to a virtual trainer. If online classes are too expensive for your taste, you can use free resources on YouTube—just make sure you have good posture to avoid pain and injuries.

Perfect Space

You don’t need a separate room to create your own yoga home studio. You can make it pretty much anywhere your mat fits, as long as you set the mood right. Use earbuds to block out the sounds, light some scented candles, and try to schedule your training sessions when you’re home alone.

A big component of yoga is flexibility, with many of the poses requiring you to be pretty bendy in your hamstrings, hips, and back. That’s why beginners to yoga who aren’t naturally flexible can find themselves getting really frustrated when they go to a class and have a hard time touching their toes or doing downward-facing dog.

If that’s your experience, don’t worry. It’s totally normal. Yoga-level flexibility takes time to build up and we’re all starting from a different place. These tips should help you bridge the gap from “naturally inflexible” to “yoga pro.”

Don’t Compare Yourself to Others

Chances are that the people in your yoga class who can easily fold themselves in half have been doing yoga for years, so don’t judge yourself if you can’t bend the way that they can yet. Everybody is on their own journey and you can only compare yourself to yourself.

Breathe Into It

Getting into deep stretches can be pretty uncomfortable and a lot of people respond by holding their breath. That’s actually the worst thing you can do, as taking slow, deep, steady breaths can help you relax into a stretch, feeling more comfortable and getting deeper into it.

Use Props

Props like yoga straps and blocks are tools made specifically to help people perform yoga poses when they’re not quite flexible enough yet to do it without. There’s no shame in using them and they can be tremendously useful in helping you achieve yoga poses wherever you are in your flexibility journey.
