While working out alone might be your escape from the kids, it’s super beneficial to work out with your kids too. We’re not saying you shouldn’t workout away from your kids, but incorporating exercise with the kiddos is a great way to help them build healthy habits and it’s fun! It Models Healthy Behaviors

Every kid loves copying their parents’ actions (or words). One of the most effective ways to improve your kids’ habits is by modeling it yourself. If you’re always going somewhere else to work out, your kids won’t see it for themselves. Working out with them shows them that this is important to you, and hopefully it can become important to them as well! 

Less Screen Time

Working out is a great excuse to get them away from a screen. Not only is it less screen time for the kids, but it also takes you away from a screen as well! It’s a win-win situation.

Builds a Strong Bond

Distracting a crying toddler with an electronic device may be the easiest way to make them stop crying, but it is not the healthiest. 

422 parents of young children took part in a study that was recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association

The findings showed that using screen time to stop a tantrum was associated with more emotional dysregulation in children, especially boys. Not only does the practice prevent parents from teaching kids how to handle challenging emotions, but it can also send a message to children that behaving like that is a way to get what they want. 

“When you see your 3-to 5-year-old having a tough emotional moment, meaning they are screaming and crying about something, they’re getting frustrated, they might be hitting or kicking or lying on the floor. If your go-to strategy is to distract them or get them to be quiet by using media, then this study suggests that is not helping them in the long term,” noted Dr. Jenny Radesky, a developmental behavioral pediatrician and lead author of the study. 

The World Health Organisation has previously said that sedentary screen time is not recommended for children under the age of two, while those between two and four should get an hour max. 

If your toddler is going hysterical, Radesky suggests giving them a relaxing and comfortable place to collect their thoughts and feelings.

Snacks

Make sure you have enough water and some juice. Make frequent stops to refuel and keep the kids motivated. You can also prepare a special treat for the end of the hike.

Destination

Choose a destination your kids will enjoy. Kids usually love exploring nature, so make sure there’s something exciting for them. This can be a waterfall with a swimming hole, a cave that looks unusual, or anything else that will have them excited for days before the trip.

Clothes

Dress your kids in layers and make sure to bring some extra clothes if they need to change. Dress appropriately for the weather but be prepared for a bit colder or warmer weather, just in case.

It can be a challenge to get kids up and active these days! They spend hours watching TV and playing video games but have little to no physical activity.

So many children suffer from obesity and other health problems that were unheard of a decade or two ago. If getting your children to be active is something that you struggle with, keep reading. We have some tips for you!

Getting Your Kids Up And Moving!

For some children, it’s actually not that difficult to get them outside. They just need a little push and they’re out of the door. Take them on a walk around the neighborhood or a bike ride to the park. If possible, encourage them to walk or bike to school too. The more exercise, the better!

For other kids, the idea of walking or biking may not be enough to get them to put the tablet down. In those situations, it is important to have outside activities that will be fun for them. Be sure to have multiple activities that you can switch between to keep the fun going. Tag, kickball, and jumping rope are all fun games that never get old.

Get Involved!
