Most gyms have a locker room with a shower, and nothing feels better than soaping off the sweat immediately after a workout. But not everyone is comfortable with the commonality of gym showers and you may have a hard time deciding between the lesser of two discomforts: showering at the gym or at home. Here are some tips to help you decide where to shower after a workout.

Hygiene

As you might imagine, showering in a place where other people have showered increases your risk of athlete’s foot and similar issues. It’s important to wear shower shoes in public showers, which should help eliminate the risk. At the same time, it’s not very good for your skin or other areas to wear sweaty clothes for too long, so if your journey home is longer than is comfortable, you may want to at least rinse off and put on dry clothes before leaving. If it’s not too long, then be sure to shower and change right when you arrive home if you’re very sweaty.

Comfort and Privacy

Much of this decision comes down to personal comfort. Specifically, how much stuff do you want to take with you? How much privacy do you care about? Do you have a long post-shower routine? If you choose to shower at the gym, you’ll have to carry an extra change of clothes and possibly extra personal hygiene products, unless you have a dedicated locker in which to keep them. But that may be worth it for the immediate satisfaction of getting clean and dry without an uncomfortable journey home.

If your gym bag is your best buddy and half of your life is packed there, these are the gross secrets that will totally surprise you. By simply avoiding them you will have a much more pleasant experience while working out and you’ll be staying away from germs as well.

You’re Not Cleaning It Enough

It’s recommended that you clean your gym bag once a week. Although it’s recommended to clean it more often; there are several studies which show that once a week might not be enough. If you want to avoid bacteria and fungi, you should definitely wash it once a week and also do it very thoroughly.

Wet Things

Everything that’s wet, starting with gym clothes, to equipment is especially gross and filthy. That’s why you should place them in a separate compartment, even place them in a bag. The first thing you need to do when you get home is to take them out of the bag.

Gym Floor

Avoid leaving your gym bag on the gym floor. Even if the employees there keep it very clean and are constantly wiping the floor, it still has so many germs. You will be assigned a locker, which you should also clean with antibacterial wipes.

There is no such thing as a perfectly clean gym. You can be on the search for a super-sparkling place, but there are some parts of it which are packed with bacteria, mostly because of the constant use. These are some of the germiest spots at the gym you want to avoid.

Water Fountain

Every spot related to water is filled with germs, mostly because of the mold and rust. Stay away from the water fountain if you can, and avoid touching it with your mouth at all costs. It’s one of the germiest spots at the gym without a doubt.

Mats

For the best experience at the gym, it’s a smart idea to bring your own mat. The mats are constantly used by different people, so let’s say they are not as clean as we’d want them to be. It’s really important for employees to clean the mats as well.

Gym Shower

If you want to use the gym shower make sure that you enter it with flip-flops or shower shoes. The floor is usually packed with germs and the best way to avoid infections is by protecting your feet. Also, bring your own towels.

It doesn’t really matter what type of workouts you do, the yoga mat is the perfect soil for bacteria. Cleaning it is the most important thing you have to remember to do no matter what. These tips are very basic but also very useful.

How Often?

There is no certain rule about how often you should clean it. The ideal scenario is to spray it and wipe it after every workout. It’s recommended that you wash it and clean it very well at least once a month.

How to Do It?

It’s very simple and it doesn’t require any special products. The most basic way to clean the yoga mat is to use soap and water. Make the solution with a few drops of soap and use a sponge to do the job.

A very smart idea is to use your washing machine. So may ladies put the mat in the washer and that’s it. These days there are many special sprays and other products you can get to sanitize and destroy bacteria on the mat. It’s a great idea to use these often with a cloth so that you are sure you’re safe when working out.
