Most people are not getting the recommended amount of sleep, whether that is due to stress, children or just staying up too late and scrolling on your phone. When you don’t get enough sleep, this can affect your mental sharpness, mood, productivity and food choices the next day. Melatonin has been the most popular natural sleep aid, but magnesium is also a really good supplement to take before bed.

How does it help?

Magnesium is a mineral that can help control blood glucose, blood pressure regulation, muscle and nerve function, and so much more. It also plays an important role in converting protein into the chemicals that helps you to slow the nervous system down and help you to feel sleepier.

Melatonin is a known supplement to help relax your muscles, so for those who suffer with restless leg syndrome, or you have tightness from your workouts, magnesium is better in helping to alleviate that.

Where can you find it?

You don’t necessarily need to take a supplement as magnesium can be found in a lot of foods in your diet. If you aren’t eating a balanced diet, you might want to have a blood test to check if you are deficient. Magnesium can be found in almonds, spinach, peanut butter, avocado, bananas and lots of dairy products.

When it comes to milk, we never had more options to choose from. A trip to the grocery store can be very confusing, and if you want to try something new, you can be shocked by the amount of choices. There’s classic dairy milk, but there are also many different types of non-dairy milk that all promise certain nutritional benefits. What’s the difference between drinking dairy and non-dairy milk?

Understanding Milk Better

While non-dairy milk options like almond milk, soy milk, rice milk, and coconut milk are often marketed as healthy, it doesn’t always make sense to replace regular milk with these plant-based alternatives. They have completely different nutritional content and dairy milk is richer in certain nutrients, like calcium.

Satiate Yourself

If you completely give up on dairy milk and drink plant-based milk instead, make sure you’re still intaking enough calcium, protein, phosphorus, and vitamin B12. All these things are commonly found in dairy milk and cutting out this ingredient can be harmful for your health unless you substitute.

Some people can’t tolerate lactose or can’t drink dairy milk at all, and for them it makes sense to cut it out completely. If you don’t have problems digesting milk, you don’t have to stop drinking it, you can combine it with non-dairy milk that you prefer and keep both in your diet.

You don’t have to give up butter if you want to eat a healthy diet. In fact, butter can easily be a part of a healthy and balanced diet for anyone. Unless you’re vegan or can’t tolerate dairy, the only thing you need to worry about is the number of calories because butter is calorie-dense and delicious, which means you can easily eat too much of it!

When buying butter in a store, make sure you’re getting the best quality for your money. Pay attention to the ingredient list and stay away from butters that have a longer shelf life than around 35 days—this means they have additives. The butter should be packed in a non-transparent packaging because exposure to light decreases the amount of Vitamin A in it.

High-quality butter should be smooth and soft. It’s yellow in color, but you can notice differences depending on the time of the year. Summer butter can be darker than winter butter because the animals get different food over the year.

Once you’ve got it home, check the quality by putting a small piece in boiling water. Natural butter will melt evenly while the low-quality one won’t. If your butter crumbles when you cut it with a knife, it means there’s a lot of added water in it.

Yep, I ate white sourdough bread & butter (with flaked salt – ah yum)… ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Did I enjoy it? Absolutely. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Is this nutritionally the most amazing food to eat? Perhaps not. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Will I gain ‘X’ amount of weight? No. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Will I die? Nope. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Unless you are Coeliac or gluten intolerant, there is NO valid reason to eliminate gluten from your diet 🤦🏼‍♀️ this goes for all foods – dairy, sugar, alcohol, chocolate… ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You may find this weird coming from a Nutritionist. I am not saying you should eat these foods for your entire diet, however ALL foods are part of a healthy lifestyle – in moderation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But have you noticed that restricting the foods you love to eat, will just make you want to eat them even more? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Food is meant for so much more than it’s nutritional value. We need food for pleasure, enjoyment, meaning and connection. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Living a healthy lifestyle should be P L E A S U R E A B L E ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But, the pleasure is taken away once you focus purely on the ‘health’ of food. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That’s why, I ate the bread with #noregrets and then followed with a salad but not because I felt I had to compensate – but because that is what I truly felt like! Though butter and cheese are often considered keto staples, the answer is a bit more complicated. Many dairy products are great sources of protein, but you shouldn’t forget that they also contain sugar. The lactose found in dairy breaks down into glucose, a sugar in your body that will prevent ketosis.

When in doubt, check the nutrition label on the product. You will quickly realize that ice cream, sweetened yogurts, and flavored milk have more calories and higher sugar content compared to plain milk or cheese. Hard cheese, soft cheese, butter, and even whipped cream should be your go-to choices if you can’t resist dairy while on keto.
