Sometimes life gets in the way, and before you know it, you haven’t been to the gym in 2 months. Work, family life, stress, and lack of sleep often occupy all of our time. If you want to start working out again, but don’t know where to start, here’s a few tips to get you back in the gym.

Start Slow

You won’t be able to go from zero to five days a week without burning out again. The best way to start is to do one or two short workouts a week and start adding more time each week. There was a reason you stopped going in the first place and you don’t want to go back to that place, especially if it was overtraining. You want to go back slowly and give your muscles a chance to recover after every workout.

Use Your Time Wisely

So many people go to the gym to say they have been to the gym, but don’t progress. If you want to make the most from your workouts, follow a plan that is designed for you and your goals. If you have time for two workouts per week, make them full body.

Warm Up

One of the main reasons people are put off from returning to exercise is the painful muscles after. If you have taken a long break, you will need to make sure to do a good 15-minute dynamic warm-up, with mobility exercises included. Don’t go into your first workout straight away—make sure that everything is warmed up before you start, and this will prevent the pain after.

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (or DOMS) is a normal part of working out that happens when you haven’t used a certain muscle in a while or push yourself harder than usual. It usually hits about 24 – 72 hours after your workout and it can range from being mildly unpleasant to so painful you can barely sit down on the toilet. If you’re suffering from a bad case of DOMS right now, here are some tips to help you get through.

Be Prepared to Wait

The truth is that most of the DOMS tips out there like taking Epsom salt baths or icing your muscles may provide some temporary relief, but they aren’t actually going to make your DOMS go away any faster. Nothing is going to end your DOMS other than time, so just be prepared for it to take between 1 and 5 days until your DOMS is gone all the way.

Don’t Push Yourself

If you’re used to a workout regimen that has you in the gym multiple times a week, you might find yourself in the situation in which you have DOMS but are supposed to work out those same muscles again. Pro tip: don’t do it. It’s only going to make the DOMS worse. Your muscles need time to properly recover before you put them through the wringer once more.

Walk Around

That being said, being totally sedentary isn’t going to help either. Getting your blood flowing can help your DOMS hurt a lot less, so at least try to get up and walk around a little bit every so often while you’re recovering.

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is totally normal a day or two after your workout. It happens when there are microtears within the muscles that lead to inflammation over the first 24 to 48 hours following an intense workout. You’re more likely to experience DOMS when you do an exercise you haven’t done before or you increase your reps. So, how can you treat DOMS at home?

Ice and Heat

Ice and heat can help manage pain and take away some of the discomfort you’re experiencing. Research is divided over which is more effective, but we say you should use whatever works best for you.

Nutrition

While there have been studies that have shown that cherry juice, protein-rich chocolate milk, and turmeric can reduce muscle soreness, in general, it’s important to have a balanced diet with enough protein and carbs. Make sure you also are staying hydrated.

Active Recovery

Active recovery is one of the most effective ways to treat DOMS and it includes walking, cycling, light lifting, and stretching.

Foam Rolling

Foam rolling has also been shown to help with soreness because it increases blood flow to the muscles.

Sleep

Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Seven to eight hours per night will help reduce soreness from DOMS.

Feeling sore after a workout is one of the ways we know we pushed ourselves hard, but what about when you continue feeling sore the next day? While feeling sore after an intense workout is totally normal, sometimes it’s important to slow down and give your body time tor recover.

We get that you don’t want to miss a workout, but it can be dangerous when you don’t give your body time to rest and recover. Tired muscles that haven’t recovered are more susceptible to muscle tears or tissue damage.

With that being said, the burn you feel 24 to 48 hours after an intense workout is called delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and the pain can be a good thing. When the muscle recovers, it’s going to recover stronger than it was before.

Just make sure that you’re suffering from DOMS and not an injury. A way to tell the difference is if the pain is bilateral—if you have one sore shoulder after you’ve worked out both shoulders, it may be a sign of an injury. If you feel normal soreness in a muscle, ligament, or tendon, it’s DOMS and you can continue working out, just focus on other parts of your body and give the sore part of your body a rest for a couple of days.

Sore muscles are inevitable, regardless if you are a beginner or a professional weightlifter. But there is always the famous question: “skip or not skip the next day?” Instead of wondering, here is what you should be doing.

Don’t Take Pre-Workout Medicine

Taking painkillers before a workout is a big no-no! It can mask an injury or cause you to push yourself harder and further than you should. If you experience after workout muscle soreness, icing the place where it hurts is a better option than trying to prevent DOMS – delayed onset muscle soreness.

Get to Know Your Body

Experiencing DOMS is a good thing; it is caused by muscle microtears, which helps build muscle fiber and make them stronger. However, if your pain is unusual or you think you might have injured yourself, stop immediately, because pushing through the pain can harm your body even more.

Work With Other Body Parts

Although DOMS can be painful, it isn’t an excuse to skip your workout. So, if you have sore arms, concentrate on other body parts, like your legs or abs. You won’t hurt as much, but you will still be on track with your workout.
