We all know that vegetables are good for your health, but some are more effective than others. Here are five reasons why onions should be on your list of foods that strengthen the body and improve your immune system.

Loaded With Nutrients

Onions are nutrient-dense, which means that they’re low in calories, but high in vitamins and minerals. They are rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin B, and potassium.

Packed With Antioxidants

Onions contain over 25 varieties of antioxidants which can help prevent cellular damage and heart disease. Red onions contain the most antioxidants which can also be instrumental in combating diabetes and certain cancers.

Helps Control Blood Sugar

Onions contain compounds such as quercetin and sulphur compounds which can balance blood sugar levels and therefore have anti-diabetic effects.

May Boost Bone Density

While it is dairy that often gets the credit for promoting good bone health, onions can also help support strong bones. They can reduce oxidative stress, increase antioxidant levels, and help prevent bone loss. This is useful news for those on a vegan diet!

Antibacterial Properties

Onions can help limit the growth of harmful bacteria such as E. coli and S. aureus, and they promote good bacteria in the gut. This aids digestion and helps keep your insides healthy.

Many people believe that eating healthy is expensive as the “healthy foods” that come to mind are specialty juices, supplements, organic foods, and protein powders/bars. But, you don’t need to eat these items to be healthy. There are tons of ways to make healthy eating cost-effective and here are a few to get you started.

Check Your Pantry & Fridge

The best way to save money on groceries is to use what you already have. Check your pantry and fridge for fruits, veggies, and dry items. Then, make recipes with these ingredients.

Meal & Snack Prep List

After you search your pantry and fridge, make a list of the snacks and meals you want to have for the week. This way when you go to the store, you’ll only by what you need and no extra items which add up quickly.

Go Beyond Organic

Organic doesn’t mean healthier, but it does translate into more money. Fruits and vegetables with thick skins are fine to buy in the regular produce section.

Modify Recipes

Work with what you already have and if the recipe calls for a protein like chicken, but you have tofu that needs to be used, swap it for the chicken. This can be done with most proteins. The same principle can be used for fresh and dried herbs—if a recipe calls for fresh herbs, you can use a smaller portion of the dried herbs instead.
