Like most things when it comes to physical health, our joints are something that many of us take for granted. When they’re functioning optimally, we rarely give them a second thought, but when an injury occurs, the pain and limitations to mobility it may cause suddenly becomes all we can focus on. While some wear and tear is inevitable as we age, our lifestyle choices can have a major impact on how much and how quickly our joints wear out. Read on for some tips on how to take care of your joints and prevent injuries.

Stay Active, but Keep it Low-Impact

Regular exercise is crucial for joint health, but high-impact activities can put a serious strain on joints by weakening cartilage over time. To get your heart pumping without excessive force, opt for exercises such as swimming, walking, or cycling instead. Activities such as yoga that work to build flexibility and strengthen the muscles around your joints can also help to relieve pressure and discomfort.

Follow a Healthy Diet

To reduce swelling and promote joint lubrication, be sure to include plenty of omega-3s, healthy fats, and antioxidant-rich foods in your diet. Some examples include fatty fish, nuts and seeds, and green leafy vegetables. Avoid refined carbohydrates and processed meats, which can increase inflammation and make joint pain worse.

Consider Supplements

If diet and exercise aren’t quite cutting it, talk to your doctor about whether adding certain joint support supplements to your daily regimen may be right for you. Glucosamine and chondroitin are two natural options that have been shown to prevent the breakdown of cartilage, while omega-3s and curcumin may help to calm inflammation.

Most people associate strength training with bigger, leaner muscles, assuming that it’s not necessary to include in a workout routine if building muscle isn’t one of their fitness goals. The truth is, however, that strength training offers several significant benefits that have little to do with increasing muscle size. If you’re on the fence about whether strength training is for you, read on to learn more about some of the lesser-known ways it can improve your health.

Enhanced Metabolic Rate

Regular strength training has been shown to rev up metabolism, leading to more efficient calorie burning even outside workout sessions. As muscles require more energy than fat, increased  lean muscle mass from strength training can contribute to a higher resting metabolic rate, meaning more calories burned throughout the day and more effective weight management.

Improved Joint Health

While we tend to think of each body part as an individual unit, it’s much more accurate to view the body as one whole where everything is connected. Of course regular strength training will increase muscle size, but it also plays a pivotal role in enhancing joint stability and flexibility. This can reduce the risk of injury and is especially beneficial for people with joint conditions like arthritis.

Enhanced Mental Resilience

The discipline, focus, and determination required both during and in committing to strength training sessions can show up as improved resilience in other areas of life and improve self-esteem by promoting a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, exercise triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s feel-good chemicals that reduce stress and anxiety.

We’ve all been there. In the middle of a yoga class when the instructor cues a pose, and as we move toward it we notice a joint crack or pop. It may feel a bit unusual, and leave you wondering whether joints cracking is something to be concerned about. Unless you experience pain or swelling around the joints that “cracked,” you actually have no reason to worry, and you can rest assured that this is incredibly common.

If you’re like us, though, you may have wondered what really causes joints to crack. There are plenty of myths around potential causes as well as consequences, and we thought it was finally time to put them to rest. We did a little research, and here’s what we discovered.

Joint cracking is typically caused by one of two things. Air bubbles can form in the space between joints, and when the body moves in certain ways, can collapse. The other explanation is that movement can cause bones and other connective tissue to come in contact, and when they do, a sound is created. These noises are harmless and have no connection to whether or not one develops arthritis, which is a common misbelief. If you’re experiencing pain, see your health care professional. Otherwise, you can keep on crackin’.
