Do you love red meat, but you’re trying to eat healthier? Red meat isn’t known as the healthiest protein source as it’s high in saturated fat and sodium, but during barbecue season, it’s hard to avoid it. How can you go without hamburgers and hotdogs in the summer? But with these tips, you can enjoy red meat, while still leading a healthy lifestyle.

Choose Lean Cuts

Reduce the saturated fat in your meat by choosing lean cuts. Look for labels that include loin, round, and sirloin, which are lower in fat compared to prime cuts.

Bulk Up Burgers

Make burgers more filling by adding veggies like mushroom or black beans and other meats like turkey to your ground beef. This way you won’t skimp out on your burger and it will be tastier.

Trim the Fat

When you’re prepping meat, trim off any visible fat and pour off the melted fat when the meat’s done cooking.

Avoid Char and Smoke

Well-done and smoked meats have higher levels of heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are linked to cancer. So, avoid overcooking meat, minimize charring, and avoid the smoker.

Load Up on Fruits and Veggies

Include veggie and fruit-based side dishes around the meat, so your entire plate isn’t red meat. Kebabs are also a great way to get more veggies with your meal.

Are you thinking about giving up meat? We wouldn’t be surprised if you are, considering there are many reasons why people do it. You can make a permanent change or try it out for a while, but no matter what you do, it won’t be a simple process. Here are some things you can expect to happen when you stop eating meat.

Cheaper Groceries

Meat can get very expensive! If you mostly buy beans, legumes, veggies, and fruits, you can expect your grocery expenses to be lower and this can be motivating for many people. This lifestyle change can allow you to save up for something bigger or to splurge on some other things on a daily basis.

Digestive System Benefits

Your digestive system will massively improve when you start eating more fresh foods, especially vegetables. This is because they contain a lot of fiber, which helps you feel less bloated along with improving acid reflux problems.

Junk Food Temptation

Pay attention not to fall into the common trap: eating more junk food just because it’s plant-based. Chips, french fries, and many other processed foods technically don’t contain animal products, but that doesn’t mean they’re a good choice for you. They contain a lot of empty calories and not enough nutrients to provide you with things your body needs, so make smarter choices whenever you can.

People have many different reasons for wanting to eat less meat. Some people are perturbed by the treatment of animals and therefore have a strong desire to become vegan. And then there are some who simply don’t like the taste. Whatever the case, if you’re trying to eat less meat, here are some simple tips that can help you achieve that goal.

Plan Your Meals

If you’re currently used to eating meat every day, you may feel confused when you realize you don’t have many meatless options for lunch or dinner. Planning your meals, researching the recipes, and getting the ingredients can be the key to your lifestyle change. It’s important to eat foods that provide enough protein and healthy fats so you can stay full longer even without any meat.

Start Slowly

It’s okay if you don’t want to change your whole life at once; that probably wouldn’t be sustainable anyway. You can start slow, with one meatless day per week, and build up the amount of meals without meat you eat on a weekly basis from there.

Find Company

Everything is easier when you have support, so if your significant other or a close friend wants to join you on this challenge, it will be easier for both of you! You can keep each other accountable and motivate each other along the way, and also come up with new exciting recipes to try together.

There are so many vegan and vegetarian meats out on the market and available at fast-food establishments, which makes it easier than ever before for non-meat-eaters. There are tons of plant-based substitutes like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods and while meat alternatives aren’t something new, these meatless “meats” are supposed to look and taste like real meat. But, are “fake meats” healthier than real meat?

Beef provides 10 essential nutrients including protein, iron, and B vitamins while alternative meats can have lots of different ingredients and are highly processed. In regards to calories, alternative meats are usually less caloric, but they usually have the same amount or more saturated fat and sodium than regular burgers. In regards to protein, not all protein is equal and for plant-based eating, with the exception of soy, your body can’t absorb and use the protein as well.

Additionally, alternative meats don’t always contain actual vegetables—they often contain pea, mung bean, and rice proteins. If you’re looking to get your serving of vegetables for the day, opt for black bean burgers or those made with more vegetables and beans.

If you’re looking to decrease your meat intake, you need to make sure you’re still getting nutrients from proteins and fat. Try and eat more vegetables and high-quality fats like avocados, seeds, and nuts.
