]]>Anora stars Madison as a twenty-something exotic dancer whose life takes a wild turn after she marries the wealthy son of a Russian oligarch. She won an Oscar for her breakout role in this indie film, but preparing for it wasn’t easy, and she told Nashville Scene that the training process completely changed her body.
“You have to build lots of upper-body strength and develop muscles in places you didn’t have before, but… the conditioning that goes along with the training… is one of the things that I never expected. So it was a big undertaking to dedicate myself to accomplishing certain skills,” she explained.
Madison said she spent “countless hours a day” learning how to pole dance for several months, and she even took twerking classes. She put a lot of effort into these lessons because she wanted her character to seem like a seasoned dancer after witnessing other pole dancers in action and seeing how effortless they seemed.

]]>People started using poles for athletic purposes about 800 (!) years ago in India. They did it as part of a traditional Indian sport called mallakhamb, using a wooden pole to perform endurance and strength exercises. The pole then made its way from India to China, where it was used in circus acts and acrobatics. Fun fact: in both cases, it was men who did the pole dancing.
It was only in the late 19th century that the sensual variation of pole dancing done by female belly dancers started being a thing in the US. Travelling belly-dancing shows arrived at the country and became popular during the first part of the 20th century. This form of pole dancing is most likely what led the way to adult clubs adopting pole dancing in the 80s.
Luckily, since the early 2000s, pole dancing has started coming back to the sports arena, where it belongs. An increasing number of pole dance studios started opening both in the US and in other countries; and in 2017, pole dancing was finally recognized as a professional sport.
People practicing pole dance can attest to what a challenging sport it really is. Other than providing great cardio exercise, it works on the whole body, strengthening muscles and increasing flexibility.
So, what are you still doing here? Go check out the nearest pole dance studio.

]]>Pole dancing is a great workout for your upper body, core, and thighs. You’ll be lifting your body weight over an extended period of time, by climbing up the pole.
Being flexible is so much more than just being able to do splits and looking good – it decreases your risk of getting injuries and becoming sore.
Your body will become stronger and you will learn to appreciate your body for all it can do. Your muscles will also become stronger and you will gain the body confidence we all wish for.
As stated earlier, pole dancing is a form of exercise – it’s aerobic training. All of your muscles are being activated, which promotes blood flow.
Your body will be exhausted from all the stretching and exercise you will be doing, which will lead to a great night’s sleep.
