If you prefer hitting the shower as soon as you’re done with your workout, waiting until you get home probably isn’t an option. You can always rely on a gym shower, but it’s important to follow some unspoken rules, starting with these five.

Keep it Quick

The number of showers at most gyms is pretty limited, so it’s important to be as quick and efficient as possible because other people may be waiting for their turn.

Wear Flip-Flops

It’s important to treat your feet with care and wear flip-flops when using a gym shower. Bacteria and fungi thrive in this environment and can lead to infections, such as athlete’s foot.

Bring Your Toiletries

Bringing your own supplies, such as soap, shampoo, and a towel, is a must when you’re using a gym shower because they usually won’t be provided.

Keep Your Distance

Shower gyms are a pretty cramped and intimidating place, so try to keep your distance and respect other people’s personal space.

Keep it Clean

You should always try to leave the gym shower the same way you’ve found it. Make sure to clean up after yourself and don’t leave any hair or soap residue behind to ensure the shower is tidy for the next person that comes along.

Remember Katy Perry’s super-catchy track, “Hot N Cold”? If you’ve heard the banger (and come on, who hasn’t?), you’ll remember the singer getting annoyed that her boyfriend would swing from hot to cold.

While we can totally understand that being frustrating in a relationship, going from hot to cold can be really good for your physical and mental health. Having a hot shower and then switching the water to freezing cold for the last 60 seconds can seem terrifying, but trust us, the benefits are worth it!

Skin

Cold temperatures cause the blood vessels to constrict, reducing the effects of swelling and inflammation. You may be familiar with the idea if you’ve ever placed ice or a cold spoon on your eyes in the morning. If it works for the puffiness in that area, imagine what a blast of cold water can do for your entire body.

Hair

Washing your hair with hot water can actually strip it of its natural oils, and leave your scalp feeling itchy and irritated. This doesn’t happen with cold water, though. Cold water also has the power to seal and strengthen the hair cuticle, leaving your locks shinier and stronger over time.

Wellness

Studies have shown that shocking our bodies with cold water—or submerging them entirely—has a host of benefits. Cold water can improve sleep quality, alleviate pain, boost the immune system, help with depression and anxiety, and increase alertness.
