While working out is essential to your well-being, doing so when sick can seem counterintuitive. But while some people prefer resting when ill, others prefer activity over the boredom of sitting at home. Still, the question remains: is it alright to exercise while you’re sick?

Can Exercise Make You Feel Better?

For some people, the idea of being mobile seems like it could help them feel better. According to infectious disease specialist Amesh Adalja, MD, there’s no research to suggest that exercise helps you overcome illness. In fact, overexertion could make you feel worse. Still, there are hormones that are released that can make you feel good independent of your illness, which means that you’ll have to be careful when deciding what exercise to do.

What Exercises Can You Do When Sick?

Sports medicine physician Jessalynn Adam, MD explained that working out is alright so long as the symptoms you experience are all above the neck, meaning a sore throat, runny nose, or nasal congestion. She added that you should only do low-intensity workouts, though, and stay clear of anything too challenging such as HIT or heavy strength training and too much cardio.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to working out when you’re sick. On the one hand, getting sick is your body telling you that it needs to recharge its batteries and take a break. On the other hand, working out does wonders for us mentally, which can at times help us heal. So which one is right? Let’s discuss.

Usually Not

The fact of the matter is, every situation is different. There are certain sicknesses where it would be absolutely the worst idea ever to work out, such as if you’re feeling faint or with a strong fever. There are certain times when it’s clear that water and rest is all you need. So when do you know that it’s okay to exercise?

Feeling the Energy

The best time to work out when sick is when you start to get a feel for life around you. If you’re still sick, but are starting to feel like getting up and eating some nourishing meals, it may be also time to get a workout in. Bear in mind that even if you work out when you’re sick, you should still take it easy. You never want to overexert yourself and do too much too fast after being sick.

The transition between summer and fall can be tough, and it’s not unusual to start feeling a little bit under the weather as you’re trying to adjust. If you don’t feel like missing your workout because of a cold, these are the best exercises you can do without putting your body under too much stress.

Jogging

It’s safe to go for a light run when you have a cold, as long as your symptoms are above the neck and you’re not pushing your body to the limits. Fresh air could do you good, but running on a treadmill is always an option if you don’t feel like heading outside.

Stationary Bike

You’re allowed to set your own pace on a stationary bike, and take a break whenever it feels like you’re pushing it too far. It’s also easy to free your hands without losing control whenever you feel like your nose is running or you’re about to sneeze.

Home Workouts

It’s totally understandable if you don’t feel like going to the gym and being surrounded by people when you’re under the weather. If you still want to stay active, doing a couple of light exercises at home is always an option and you can easily stop once it feels like too much.
