While notoriously well-known for being difficult to build, your calf muscles are actually essential to your everyday leg movements, making them essential muscles to train. Here are some simple home workouts that you can use to isolate and tone your calf muscles, thereby building them more effectively than before.

Single-Leg Calf Raise

Start by holding onto a wall or pole with one arm and then lifting the leg on the opposite side of your body. Proceed to push up with your foot that is still on the ground, thereby lifting your body upwards. Once on your toes, return to your original position. Consider standing on a narrow log or holding dumbbells in your hands for an added challenge.

Seated Calf Raise

Sit on a chair or exercise bench with your feet shoulder-width apart. Ensure that your feet are flat on the ground and hold two heavy dumbbells on top of your knees. If you don’t have dumbbells, wrap a resistance band around your knees and under your feet. Engage your core and make sure that your hips and glutes remain tight as you lift your feet before returning back to your original position.

Jumping Jacks

Start with your feet shoulder-width apart and your arms at your sides. Bring your feet together as you jump while bringing your hands close together overhead. Then, jump back into your starting position and begin your next rep.

Standing Calf Raise

This is a basic, yet very effective exercise for toning your calves and the important thing is that you can do it basically anywhere. Just slowly lift your heels off the floor while keeping the core tight, pause for a second and then return back to the ground.

Pile Squat with Calf Raise

Even though it’s a bit more challenging, this exercise is not only great for toning and strengthening your lower legs and glutes, it’s also good for targeting the muscles in your inner thighs.

Jump Rope

This fun exercise we all loved as children is beneficial in so many ways. You can do it to warm up before a workout, to burn some calories and, of course, to sculpt your calves.

Mountain Climbers

This basic exercise that you’re probably already familiar with can help you strengthen and tone your entire legs, including the calves. It’s also good for your balance, flexibility, lower back, and core.

Got large calf muscles that you wish were just a little smaller and more shapely? Then we’ve got you covered. Here’s what you need to know about getting your calves under control.

Working Out

The best way to shrink a body part is to get rid of any excess fat. Cardio is the easiest way to do this because it will burn fat without adding muscle weight. If you add muscle, you’re going to bulk up your calves rather than reduce them.

Gentle stretching exercises (such as those learned in yoga or pilates) can help you improve the flexibility of your calves and thin them out.

If you like strength training, then make sure you don’t use much weight (the idea is to trim your calves not bulk them up) and do regular high repetition sets.

Calf raises can be good too. Stand with your feet apart directly below your shoulders and then curl up on to your toes.
