You may have heard a whole lot of hype about starting the day with a cold shower. Some influencers claim that this rather unappealing morning ritual is life-changing, with benefits ranging from better energy levels to fewer colds! Let’s take a look at some of those benefits to see if the eek-worthy experience of a cold shower is really worth it.

Shiny Hair & Hydrated Skin

Taking a warm, steamy shower causes our pores to open, whereas a cold shower causes them to contract. This can help lock in all those natural oils to give you plump, hydrated skin and shiny hair. If you suffer from dry hair and skin, switching to cold showers a few times a week might be a great way to retain moisture.

Better Mood & Energy Levels

Sudden exposure to cold water can stimulate the production of endorphins and adrenaline. This can make you feel happy, energized, and ready to take on the day. Let’s just say you’ll feel a lot better after your cold shower than during.

Better Circulation

Cold showers can cause your heart to beat more efficiently, improving your circulation, and may be helpful for people who suffer from cold hands and feet. However, just know that regular cardio exercise also has the same effect and doesn’t require you to start the day with a freezing shock to the system!

Most gyms have a locker room with a shower, and nothing feels better than soaping off the sweat immediately after a workout. But not everyone is comfortable with the commonality of gym showers and you may have a hard time deciding between the lesser of two discomforts: showering at the gym or at home. Here are some tips to help you decide where to shower after a workout.

Hygiene

As you might imagine, showering in a place where other people have showered increases your risk of athlete’s foot and similar issues. It’s important to wear shower shoes in public showers, which should help eliminate the risk. At the same time, it’s not very good for your skin or other areas to wear sweaty clothes for too long, so if your journey home is longer than is comfortable, you may want to at least rinse off and put on dry clothes before leaving. If it’s not too long, then be sure to shower and change right when you arrive home if you’re very sweaty.

Comfort and Privacy

Much of this decision comes down to personal comfort. Specifically, how much stuff do you want to take with you? How much privacy do you care about? Do you have a long post-shower routine? If you choose to shower at the gym, you’ll have to carry an extra change of clothes and possibly extra personal hygiene products, unless you have a dedicated locker in which to keep them. But that may be worth it for the immediate satisfaction of getting clean and dry without an uncomfortable journey home.

We know, the idea of getting out of your warm bed only to subject your body to icy water may not sound like the most appealing way to start your day, but hear us out. Recent research is suggesting that there are numerous benefits of immersing in cold water. While you will receive the benefits regardless of which time of day you shower, this practice does tend to have an invigorating effect, and so we recommend it as something to do in the morning rather than right before bed. Even ending your regular shower with 30 seconds to a minute of cold water can be enough if you’re curious, but not quite ready for the full-length thing.

Improves Circulation

Cold water on your skin stimulates blood flow to your internal organs by temporarily constricting circulation on the surface so that blood is directed toward deeper tissues. This can reduce inflammation and help keep your skin clear as well.

Lowers Cortisol

Cortisol is also known as “the stress hormone,” as our bodies tend to make more of it when we experience stressful situations. Over time, high levels of cortisol can lead to things like acne, fatigue, and “brain fog,” or difficulty concentrating. Some studies have shown that up to 3 minutes of a cold shower can help reduce cortisol levels. You’ll be wide awake and ready for the day.

Cold showers can improve the circulation of the blood, promote heart health, and help prevent heart attacks and stroke. The cold water stimulates blood flow to the whole body, including the extremities.

The great thing about cold showers is that anyone can do them. As long as you have a shower at home or in your local gym, you can take a cold shower whenever you want to press that reset button.

After exercising do you take a cold or hot shower and does the temperature matter? If you’ve heard of recovery showers you know that they can boost muscle or injury recovery by alternating between hot to cold temperatures. So, the answer seems to be both a combination of a cold and hot shower.

You should start with a cold shower after a workout to decrease blood flow, reduce inflammation, and stiffen the muscles and joints to reduce pain. For the early stages of an injury, cold showers work well at reducing the body’s response to injury. Then, switch the shower to a hot temperature to improve muscles and joint recovery and to reduce stiffness and aid in mobility.

Post-workout recovery should be a combination of stretching, foam rolling, yoga, and alternating between cold and hot showers. You can also try out an ice bath. It’s all about figuring out what works for your body as it differs from person to person. Remember to be patient as you won’t see results in a day, it takes time to have an effect.

To many of us, the sheer thought of showering with cold water brings shivers down our spine. Is there anyone who enjoys that? And what does it do for the body? Well, even though it sounds pretty repelling, there are many benefits that cold showers can bring you. We decided to discuss the most important ones in this article.

Improves Circulation

The cold shower, even though scary at first, is a powerful way to reset your body and reap great health benefits, starting with the improvement of circulation. The cold water causes our blood system to pump blood more efficiently, supporting the main functions of our body by supplying them with blood.

Improves Immunity

Cold showers also cause the lymphatic system to work faster – this improves our immunity and helps the body fight infections more effectively.

Helps Muscle Recovery and Soreness

Cold showers shorten the time for muscle recovery and ease muscle soreness.

Aids Weight Loss

And finally, cold showers will help you lose weight since our body burns fat in order to keep the body warm.

Keep in mind that crossing from hot to cold showers should be done gradually, so that the body can adapt.
