If the thought of taking a cold shower, let alone taking an ice bath, sounds like pure torture, you’re not alone. To voluntarily put yourself through extremely cold temperatures sounds like something only an insane person would do, but Wim Hof would disagree.

Wim Hof is a Dutch motivational speaker and extreme athlete, who has achieved many world records in his ability to withstand extremely cold conditions. So is he crazy? Or is there a method to his madness?

Wim Hof (and his millions of followers) would praise him for his genius. He has spread his knowledge and experience with the world, starting with training the breath and eventually leading to withstand cold temperatures. All of these practices are meant to improve your connection to your body and nature, with benefits including decreased stress, better sleep, more energy, and higher focus.

Catching a cold is awful. Catching a cold in summer feels even worse. Our bodies kind of understand us feeling under the weather when temperatures drop and everyone around us has a sniffly nose, but sneezing and coughing when the sun’s out and people are hanging by the pool? Cue our brains short-circuiting!

Sadly, the dreaded cold virus can strike at any time of the year. If you find yourself dealing with the sniffles this summer, here’s what you can do to help.

Drink Up

It’s a well-known thing to stay hydrated during the summer, but when you’re sick it’s even more important. Drink plenty of fluids like water, herbal tea, and clear broths, to stay hydrated and help thin out mucus secretions. You can even stick a colorful umbrella in it if it’ll make you feel a little better.

Spray Away

Using saline nasal sprays can help relieve the nasty congestion that makes your head feel like a waste paper basket that is just too full. The sprays also moisturize your nasal passages, which should help with ACs that dry out the air.

Take it Easy

Yes, we know, your friends are going to the beach and you want to join them. We get it. But resting is the best thing you can do for your body when it isn’t at its best. Take a couple of days to relax at home and recover. The beach will still be there once you’re all better.

When it is 10-below outside, everyone is going to feel the chill. Yet, some people are still cold to the touch no matter what the temperature is. If that sounds familiar, it could be a sign that something else is going on in your body.

Hypothyroidism

If your thyroid is underactive, it will struggle to produce enough hormones. This then results in your body’s metabolic functions not operating properly, leaving you feeling cold. But don’t worry, if that is the case, a daily supplement will sort you out.

Poor Circulation

Ever heard the saying, “cold hands, warm heart”? It may be a cute way for those with icy extremities to dismiss the chill, but cold hands can be a symptom of poor blood circulation. It’s best to have a doctor check whether your arteries are functioning optimally and they can advise on the best way forward.

Anemia

Another blood-related reason for being constantly cold is anemia. Caused by a lack of iron, the condition can result in fewer red blood cells or ones that cannot sufficiently transport oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. Stock up on iron-rich foods like leafy greens, lentils, and red meat.

Winter is here, it’s flu season, and colds and coughs are all around us. It’s hard to get through the winter without catching a cough. Most of the time the cough lingers after you have recovered from the cold and you want to find ways to alleviate the discomfort. Here are three home remedies you can try to soothe your throat and cough.

Salt Water Gargle

Mix half a teaspoon of table salt with eight ounces of warm water and gargle for as long as you can. It doesn’t taste so nice but it will kill bacteria, loosen up the mucus, and lower your pain.

Hot Bath or Shower

A hot bath and shower are known for helping you to de-stress after a long day of work, and the steam can also help your cold and cough. It can open up your sinuses and dilute the mucus buildup, responsible for your cough.

Ginger and Honey Tea

Both ginger and honey have remedy properties for cough and cold. Ginger root also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and honey is very soothing to the throat. Brew a ginger tea bag and add some honey and reap both their benefits.

To keep yourself healthy this season, make sure you get a flue shot and take these proactive measures. Here are the wellness essentials you need to keep you and your family safe.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Make sure you’re following the CDC social distancing guidelines and that you’re wearing a mask when in public places. You should also be regularly disinfecting commonly-touched surfaces with cleaning sprays and wipes. Also, wash your hands frequently.

Immune-Boosting Supplements

In addition to getting enough sleep, staying active, drinking fluids, and eating healthily, supplements can keep your immune system healthy. Look for ones that contain black elderberry, vitamin C, echinacea, and zinc.

Monitoring Devices

You should always be in the know when it comes to your health, so having a thermometer at home is a must. Another monitoring device worth looking in to is a pulse oximeter, which measures the level of oxygen in your blood.

Home Remedies

While home remedies won’t cure viruses, over-the-counter products like fever reducers, antihistamines, decongestants, and cough medicines can make the symptoms more managable.
