Fast food and healthy eating are rarely used in the same sentence, but 1 in 3 Americans eat fast food daily. Did you know that you can still eat at fast-food restaurants while leading a healthy lifestyle? It’s all about the choices you make and believe us when we say, a salad isn’t always the best option. Here are five tips to follow when you order at fast-food restaurants.

Avoid Temptations

When you’re hungry, you’re likely to make impulsive food choices. When looking at the menu, avoid items described as crispy, deluxe, or double and instead choose options that are grilled.

Skip Salads

Do you need more reasons not to eat salads? Many of them at fast food restaurants are loaded with cheese, croutons, fried noodles, and bacon.

Pay Attention to Toppings

Mayo, barbecue sauce, honey mustard, and ranch dressing are loaded with calories, sugar, fat, and sodium. Ask for the sauces on the side and use garnishes like onions, salsa, mustard, tomatoes, lettuce, mushrooms, and peppers instead.

Avoid Sodas

All sodas, even diet, should be avoided. Order seltzer, plain water, unsweetened ice tea, orange juice, or milk.

Pace Yourself

The brain takes 20 minutes to register feelings of fullness, so eat slowly and don’t gobble down your food.

Going out to eat can be stressful if you’re trying to eat healthy, especially if you’re eating at fast-food restaurants. While browsing the menu, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with all the choices and to make smart decisions when ordering food. But, you can still eat out and stick to your diet. Here are some healthier meals from your favorite fast-food restaurants.

Chiptole

The Mexican grill isn’t exactly known for being a healthy restaurant, with the burritos, cheeses, and creams. Next time you eat at Chipotle, go easy on the cheeses and sour creams or skip them altogether and top your meal with guacamole instead.

Einstein Bros. Bagels

Who doesn’t love bagels? To get the most from a bagel, go with whole-grain ones and add a lean protein and healthy fat like eggs, egg whites, salmon lox, turkey, and avocado.

Noodles & Company

It’s hard to avoid carbs at Noodles & Company, but try and get veggie-packed dishes with lean proteins to balance out the noodles.

Panda Express

The Panda Express Wok Smart menu has better-for-you options that are higher in protein, contain lower-calorie sauces, and include more vegetables.

Panera

There are a ton of lower-calorie options on the “You Pick Two” menu. Just remember to order the creamy, high-fat dressings on the side and to pick either nuts or cheese to sprinkle on top.
