Staggered stance deadlift, or as Pasternak calls them kickstand deadlifts, work your hamstrings and glutes. In this exercise, your feet are planted on the ground and you press your hips back as you hinge at your waist. The difference between this deadlift is that one of your legs is slightly bent, so most of the work happens in the opposite leg.
This variation of a side plank targets your core and your abductor muscles. You’ll need a chair, bench, or a stable surface to perform this exercise. It’s an intense move that you will feel in your inner thigh muscles.
An active clamshell has you lifting your hips off the ground as you raise your top leg. This move targets your glutes and strengthens your hips while giving you muscle definition in your lower body.
Pasternak’s signature move is “The Harley” which combines glute bridges and lying triceps extensions. This two-in-one exercise targets the arms, butt, and core and it’s great for improving posture.

]]>Celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak discussed Grande’s fitness journey with Shape after her recent MTV VMAs performance. He revealed that her diet mostly consists of soups, smoothies, and salads, and he recommended them to all people who are short on time.
“Most people’s excuse for not eating healthy is that they don’t have the time or they don’t know how to cook an elaborate meal. Soups, smoothies, and salads don’t really require a lot of effort. They’re a great way to take the guesswork out of cooking and make eating healthy simple,” explained Pasternak.
Grande gets many of her recipes from his cookbook The Body Reset Diet and tries to move and eat well every single day. Her main priority is to do things that are sustainable in the long run and she usually does a 30 to 45-minute strength training sessions with Pasternak three times a week.

This strategy obviously worked, since Jessica Simpson recently posted a picture celebrating her progress, which revealed she’s 100 pounds slimmer only six months after giving birth.
According to her trainer, she managed to pull this off by developing five healthy habits – hitting at least 12.000 steps on her Fitbit, getting at least seven hours of quality sleep, unplugging from technology for at least an hour, following her meal plan, and having a fun short workout every other day.

]]>Pasternak recently discussed his disdain for this common exercise with Women’s Health, and explained why he’s opposed to this lower-body move, especially once you add a barbell to the mix.
“Squats aren’t a great glute exercise at all, so I don’t do squats with my clients. Loading your spine with all that weight, putting your shoulder girdle back to hold the bar, that’s all really tough on your body,” said Pasternak.
The celebrity trainer believes that lunges are a much better alternative, since they mimic everyday movements and have the power to engage your core in a much more effective way.
“Since these are isolateral, your dominant side doesn’t have a chance to take over. And you’re getting a deeper range of motion than you would with a squat, so your glute has to work harder,” explained Pasternak.
