Matcha has become really popular in cafes across the US and now around the world, and you can understand why. The green powder has tons of nutritional benefits and a delicious taste. Matcha is a green tea that is made from the Camellia Sinensis plant, which is grown under more shade, making the leaves produce more chlorophyll. The leaves are dried and ground up to create matcha powder. Matcha is a huge part of Japanese culture, and you will find matcha powder in many foods there. Here are some health benefits of this magical green powder.

High in Antioxidants

Like regular green tea, matcha is filled with antioxidant compounds that neutralize the effects of processed foods and environmental toxins. This will reduce the risk of chronic disease and inflammation in the body, as well as enhance immunity.

De-stress you

Matcha contains L-theanine, which is an amino acid known to lower your stress levels. It reduced cortisol and increases alpha wave activity in the brain, associated with relaxation. It can have a calming effect on your nervous system.

Contains Less Caffeine Than Coffee

Even though it does contain higher levels of caffeine compared to your regular cup of green tea, the L-theanine suppresses the caffeine’s stimulating effects, giving you steady energy without a crash.

Having a dog in your home doesn’t just bring you endless love and pleasure, it also brings you tons of health benefits too. Walking your dog at least once a day for a minimum of 20 minutes can lower your blood pressure, strengthen your muscles and bones, and decrease your stress levels. Petting a dog can also help you with stress and make you feel calmer and the unconditional love from your dog can also benefit your mental health.

For those who want to incorporate more cardio into their daily schedule, having a dog can help you get out and walk every single day, no matter the weather. It also makes you want to explore different places as doing the same walks every day can get boring. Vitamin D boosts your mood and just breathing in the fresh air after a day at the office can help you to get rid of any stress.

Building stronger muscles, bones, and joints are one of the major benefits of walking. While it can be hard to motivate you to start doing this regularly, when you are a dog owner you have no choice. Your dog needs to be walked to relieve itself and exercise will prevent obesity. Once you start walking every day even for 15-20 minutes it will quickly become a habit you won’t want to stop.

Walking daily is great for your mental health as it gives you time to practice mindfulness and take advantage of being outside in nature. Walking your dog also prevents your dog from doing unwanted behaviors inside the home and creates a strong bond between you and your pet.

Having a dog can also make you more sociable—you are more likely to meet other dog owners and speak to more people on your daily walks. It will also help you to feel part of a community and even start doing longer dog walks if you have people and dogs to walk with.

Walking your dog also provides time for you to train your dogs (and yourself), with lots of recall, eye contact, and other commands.

If you are looking for ways to build healthy habits, especially cardio, having a dog will really help you stay committed to your goals and feel good while doing it. You will always have a reason to walk, which will keep you motivated.

Jumping rope is a fabulous cardio exercise and is a favorite for boxers, who use it for strength and balance. But there are many other reasons you should incorporate it into your weekly routine. Ten minutes per week is enough to see results and feel the benefits. Here are four reasons to jump rope every week

Improves Bone Strength

Jumping rope requires that you put weight on your bones which is a great way to improve your bone health. For young people, jumping rope helps the development of the bones. When we are older, we need to do more weight-bearing exercises to decrease the chance of osteoporosis. It also prevents injury—the stronger the bones, the harder they are to break.

Improves Cardiovascular Health

Jumping rope is higher in intensity than some other forms of cardio such as walking or cycling, and is really good for your heart and lungs. You don’t need to spend hours on the cardio machine to feel good. Just take your trusted jump rope and do interval training or HIIT for 10 minutes to reap the benefits.

Improves your Balance and Coordination

If you start slow and keep a manageable pace, you will see your coordination improve. Your balance will also get better as you do most of the movement on your toes, so you need to engage the core every time you jump.

Do It Anywhere

You don’t need a gym or lots of equipment—all you need a jump rope and space. Most jump ropes are lightweight so you can put it into a small bag and take it to a park or on vacation with you.

For those who have a demanding job and family life, finding time to work out during the week can be really challenging. It has been highly debated amongst health experts, that working out extra hard and long on the weekends, to make up for the lost time during the week could boost your chances of injury and mortality.

But in 2022, a new study was published by JAMA and it found that doing the recommended amount of physical activity in two days instead of spread over a week can give you the same health benefits.

The researchers studied 350,978 adults and divided them into groups according to how many minutes a week they worked out and how vigorous their activities were. Those who were active one or two days per week were put in a separate group.

The study found that people who engaged in regular physical activity both during the week or just on the weekends had a lower rate of mortality than those who were totally inactive. There also wasn’t a significant difference between those who spread out their workouts and those who fit them into two days a week for the same amount of time.

The “weekend warrior” physical activity pattern is actually more convenient for many people who want to achieve the recommended levels of physical activity. So if you have a really busy schedule during the week and can only make time for exercising or other sports activities over the weekend, be assured that you will still get the same health benefits and it is better than not going at all.

Cold and flu season is not our favorite, but it is upon us. With all the viruses still running around rampant, it’s important to keep our immune systems strong. One natural way to do so is with this concoction.

Honey and garlic each have a long list of properties that include being anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory. They’re basically an antioxidant powerhouse and definitely the things to consume if you’re trying to prevent—or get over—colds and flu.

Ingredients

  • 7 garlic cloves, peeled
  • 5 tablespoons honey

Instructions

  1. Peel and lightly crush the garlic cloves.
  2. Place the cloves in a glass container and pour in enough honey to cover all the garlic.
  3. Allow the mixture to sit at room temperature for around 5 days, until bubbles begin to form, indicating the fermentation process has begun.
  4. Let the honey and garlic sit for 1 month, opening every few days to release the carbon dioxide.
  5. After 30 days, eat a teaspoon of the honey daily or incorporate into your food.

We spend a lot of time focusing on the things we need to do in order to stay healthy. The importance of having an exercise routine, following a healthy diet, and practicing sleep hygiene are hot topics on social media and among fitness enthusiasts, and for good reason. Cultivating the right habits in each of these areas can make a huge difference in how we feel on a day-to-day basis, but did you know that having good posture can be just as important? Your parents and teachers were right when they told you to stand up straight as a child—here’s why.

Improved Core Strength

If you’re looking to strengthen your abdominal muscles but hate the idea of having to do lots of sit-ups or planks, you can take comfort in the knowledge that simply standing up straight extends your muscles and helps to keep them toned.

Better Digestion

Our organs need space in order to function properly and poor posture can put pressure on the digestive tract and impede digestion as a result. Standing up straight allows these muscles to contract as they’re meant to and keep everything running smoothly.

Reduced Pain

If you suffer from pain in areas like your back, neck, and shoulders, one of the first things you should be looking into is whether your posture is to blame. Slouching can strain these areas and limit blood flow, leaving you with a tight, sore feeling.

In the past decade or so, the number of people who practice Yoga has increased dramatically. With the serene vibe of the studio, the sounds of the calming music and voice of your instructor, and satisfying stretches that you didn’t know your body even needed, it’s no wonder practicing Yoga is such a popular activity.

But what makes Yoga so special and enjoyable isn’t just the fact that it’s a great way to exercise. Being healthy is trendy these days, and if you can find an activity that can combine physical and mental health practices, then that’s even better. Luckily, Yoga is a practice that’s full of benefits for both your mind and your body.

The Transformation of Modern-Day Yoga

Child’s pose, downward-facing-dog, cat-cow pose—we’re sure you’ve heard these terms before. The buzz about yoga has been around for a while, but it’s so much more than just a healthy workout.

The Yoga Sutras (or yoking) were formed thousands of years ago in India. The ancient practice of Yoga is a discipline that was created to help refocus your mind and reach a level of pure consciousness. There are different types and versions of yoga that have been created over the years and while it was a more mental and spiritual-focused practice back in the day, over time, the practice started to develop further, and incorporate physical elements inspired by wrestling and gymnastics.

Modern-day Yoga practices typically include three core concepts:

  1. Breathing exercises
  2. Physical posture
  3. Spiritual contemplation

Each practice and individual pose have its own unique purpose, as well as physical, psychological, and spiritual benefits. But you don’t need to be a spiritual person to reap the benefits of yoga. In fact, the two most popular reasons why people get into yoga is to enhance their flexibility or as an outlet to destress.

What Yoga Does to Your Body

Stretching is one of the most important parts of any type of sport or exercise. And that’s pretty much what the physical part of yoga is—back-to-back stretches and poses that work all parts of your body. Yoga poses utilize and stretch multiple muscle groups which have proven to be incredibly beneficial when it comes to strength and flexibility.

Muscle Benefits

According to healthcare professional and educator Krishna Sudhir, stretching “can change the water content of muscles, ligaments, and tendons to make them more elastic.” That means that even if you’re not flexible and are hesitant to start, that doesn’t matter! Yoga helps improve your balance, flexibility, coordination, and mobility. In fact, many people who participate in other sports and athletic activities like surfing, running, or dancing, use yoga to enhance their skills, etc.).

Yoga also tones your muscles, adjusts and improves your posture, and can reduce or ease chronic pain.

Weight Management

Have you ever noticed that your stomach hurts if you’re stressed? Or maybe you have this crave to eat your feelings when you’re feeling down, or just have lost your appetite altogether due to feeling anxious? Yoga can help balance your metabolism—which overlaps with the psychological benefits—and can aid with weight management since it’s an active form of exercise that works all parts of your body.

Circulatory and Cardiovascular System

It’s important to exercise frequently to keep up your health, but yoga can really benefit your lungs and heart health. Not only can yoga improve your blood flow and circulation (especially the downward dog pose), the special breathing techniques deepens your breathing, too. And as an added bonus, yoga also helps release toxins that have built up over time.

What Yoga Does to Your Brain

The fact that we can practice something so spiritually-oriented and beneficial in a physical manner is what caught the attention of millions of Americans. The main goal of Yoga is to connect your mind, body, and soul together, allowing you to live a balanced life.

Whether you’re following a guided online class or if you’re at a yoga studio, one of the first things your instructor will remind you of is the importance of being present, accepting what has happened to you outside of class, and trying and let go of it so that you can focus on what your mind, body, and soul need during the session.

Learn & Practice Self-Care

As soon as you enter the studio and start your Yoga session, it’s all about you and the mat. Yoga has been known to help reduce stress and anxiety even after the very first lesson. But more importantly, Yoga helps practice self-care since a big part of it is being in the moment and learning how to listen to your body.

The beauty of the practice is that if it’s too physically challenging for you, then you don’t need to push yourself or feel pressure since you can’t do it. It’s even encouraged to go into a resting pose—like child’s pose or downward dog—if you feel that you need a break.

Improves Focus, Patience, and Awareness

Yoga has been known to help improve your awareness (physically and mentally). It can also increase your ability to focus, and, of course, your patience, since you’re using all of these skills when you’re doing yoga—especially when you’re doing those balancing poses that require focus to stay steady.

Develops Confidence & Challenges You

There are hundreds of poses, over 10 different types of versions, and multiple levels of yoga, making it a great activity to continuously challenge yourself. And with anything challenging comes the need to be patient with yourself and appreciation for your effort and hard work.

This can eventually help you build confidence and can influence other aspects of your life. Plus, being present, listening to, and connecting with your body will help you build confidence and a healthy bond between you and your body.

What if someone told you there was something that you can do to create an immediate, positive impact on your brain, mood and focus; while protecting yourself from various health conditions like depression, Alzheimer’s and dementia?

This is the question that Wendy Suzuki poses to her audience at the beginning of her TED talk. And what is that mysterious thing that can magically improve our brain functioning and health, you ask?

Suzuki answers: it’s exercise.

It turns out that the benefits we can get from just moving our bodies are not only immediate—they also last for the rest of our lives.

As a neuroscientist, Suzuki actually discovered the life-changing power of exercise… by accident! After coming back from a river-rafting trip where she was, according to her, “the weakest person”—she decided she absolutely has to step up her workout game, and started hitting the gym regularly.

What she discovered blew her mind: not only did her mood improve, but after over a year of training, she also gained better focus and better long-term memory.

“Exercise is the most transformative thing that you can do for your brain today,” Suzuki says. And the cool thing is: even a single workout has an incredible impact on your mood and focus. But the even cooler thing is: a regular workout routine can help you enjoy the long-term benefits of exercise, that go as far as creating whole-new brain cells.

According to Suzuki, the minimum amount of exercise required to reap those benefits is three to four times of 30-minute workouts per week, involving aerobic exercises.

A lot of the time, when we want to begin a health or fitness journey, we think of taking these big, huge, life-changing steps. We imagine ourselves starting to go to the gym every single day, training to run a marathon, or changing our diet around completely. And while these changes will certainly give you benefits, they’re also hard to sustain and difficult to execute. But the good news is that even small changes can make a big difference to your health. Here are a few examples.

Drinking Less

People don’t tend to think about alcohol when they think about fitness and health, but the truth is that it can make a big impact on your health and workouts. Even just cutting down your alcohol consumption a little can leave you with much more energy and the ability to commit to healthier habits.

Running Slower

Do you hate running? Does it make you feel like your heart is going to beat out of your chest? Chances are that you’re running too fast for your endurance capacity. Even though it might feel strange, running slower will make you be able to run for much longer and probably allow you to enjoy running more.

Get Rest

Sometimes we can be so focused on working out that we forget to let our bodies recover. Taking the time to rest every so often will allow your body to continue working out in the long run.
