If you’re trying to find the most optimal exercise to help you get back into shape, we highly suggest that you consider hiking. While our title seemed a bit definitive, it is true that these things are subjective. However, if you’re unsure which kind of exercise is right for you, we strongly recommend giving hiking a try, and here’s why.

A Different Kind of Adventure

So many people who want to regularly work out don’t do it. But why? For some people, the reason they don’t work out is that they don’t see themselves fitting into the “gym culture”. This doesn’t just mean people at the gym, but also people who do workouts at home. It’s all under the same basic umbrella, and there are some who just don’t enjoy this kind of exercise.

However, hiking is the opposite. It’s completely off the grid. It’s dynamic, adventurous, and full of nature and life. If you’ve always struggled to connect to standard gym exercises, perhaps it’s because you’re looking for more adventure in your workouts. If that’s the case, consider embarking on a challenging hike, where you’ll get a rigorous workout while having the time of your life.

You’ll connect with nature, see some animals, work up a sweat, and possibly fall in love with the entire experience. What do you have to lose?

Going to the gym is the preferred method of working out for many people. If the gym isn’t your cup of tea, but you still want to move your body, these activities are a bit more outside of the box and still get you moving and grooving.

Dancing

Dancing in your room alone to your favorite bangers or in the club with friends is a great way to get your heart rate up and work up a sweat. Even better, it is entirely free and a fun activity to do instead of working out. Over the years, studies have shown that dancing is one of the best ways to release endorphins, which can help improve your mental health.

Rock Climbing

Rock climbing is a great way to engage your muscles without going to the gym. Whether climbing rocks and trees in nature or just at a rock-climbing facility, it’s a workout that doesn’t feel like so typical. Take some friends with you and make a competition out of it for an enjoyable and different way of engaging your muscles and working up a sweat without being at the gym.

Hiking With Friends

Strap on your best walking shoes, grab some friends, and head out for a hike in nature. Hiking is a great way to move your body and explore the world around you. Make sure to research the best spots around you and be well-educated about what you may need and where the hike ends.

Going to the gym is one of those things that we’ll probably have a love-hate relationship with for the rest of our lives. Some days, we look forward to going and getting in a workout from the moment we wake up, but other days, we really need to drag our feet to get there. In our opinion, working out needs to be fun for us to feel motivated, so on the days when the gym feels like the last place we want to be, it can be helpful to mix it up by exercising in a different environment. Here are some of our favorite gym alternatives.

Hiking

We love hiking because it’s a great way to get some exercise that also allows us to spend time outdoors. There are countless benefits to both mental and physical health that can come from spending time in nature, so find a trail near you and head out to enjoy improved cardiovascular health, better balance, and decreased stress.

The Playground

This one only really applies if you have kids, but if you do, you’re probably already aware of just how much running around a visit to the playground can entail. Rather than just sit on the side and observe, start a game of tag, push them on the swings, or try the monkey bars yourself! You’ll be surprised how quickly you break a sweat.

Roller Rink

When was the last time you went roller skating? It’s a great way to get in some cardio, but more than anything, it’s fun! Make a night of it and organize a group outing with friends and family. You’ll enjoy yourself so much that you won’t even realize you’re exercising.

Sometimes the key to getting in shape is really about finding an activity that you love. We don’t care what anyone says—if you’re not enjoying yourself while working out, it’s not going to last. Why would it? Ultimately, you need to feel good while doing whatever workout you’re doing, so it’s really all about finding something that makes sense for you. Here’s why hiking is a great candidate to be your go-to workout.

You’re in the Great Outdoors

As amazing and resourceful as gyms are, not everyone agrees with them. This is because they’re indoors and filled with other people, two factors that can cause certain people to feel stifled and uncomfortable. If that’s you, perhaps you’d react better to hiking outdoors. You’ll have fresh air, beautiful views, open spaces, and no one but yourself as you climb rocky landscapes.

It’s a Great Workout

Another aspect to consider is that you can find the perfect hike for you. Some of them are insanely challenging, while others are more understated and easy. If you don’t mind shlepping yourself to a trail once a week, this could be the start of a great routine where you stay fit and enjoy nature in the process.

Majestic waterfalls are a wonder of nature and a truly gratifying way to end a tough hike. They provide a beautiful view and, in spots where it’s safe, you can jump in the water and cool down by swimming or even standing under the waterfall itself! Here are three hikes at easy, moderate, and difficult levels around the U.S.

Easy: Koosah Falls and Sahalie Falls, OG

This 2.6 mile loop hike is a two-for-one deal on waterfalls. You can view both Koosah and Sahalie by hiking along the McKenzie River in the Cascade Mountains in Oregon. Koosah Falls stands at 70 feet tall and Sahalie falls at 100 feet.

Moderate: Horsetail Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, AK

During the winter, these two waterfalls actually become frozen falls that people ice-climb! But in spring, they melt, becoming two amazing reasons to hike the 2.6-mile one-way Keystone Canyon Pack Trail, which gains 250 feet of elevation from bottom to top. If you happen to be in Alaska and don’t want to brave the hike, you can also see the two falls from the highway!

Difficult: Cedar Creek Falls, CA

This 6.6-mile round-trip hike is quite advanced with 600 feet of elevation being gained along the way and the California heat to make things even harder. For that reason it’s best to hike this during cool months, but either way you’ll be richly rewarded with the chance to swim in the “Devil’s Punchbowl” at the bottom of the falls.
