As fitness enthusiasts, we all know that exercise is not just about hitting the gym or following a structured routine. It’s also about embracing the great outdoors and reaping the countless benefits of exercising in nature. Whether it’s jogging through scenic trails, cycling along picturesque routes, or practicing yoga in the park, outdoor workouts can invigorate the mind, body, and soul. However, it’s essential to prioritize safety while enjoying these outdoor fitness adventures. So, let’s dive into some fun and practical tips to stay safe while exercising outdoors.

Be Weather-Wise

Mother Nature can be unpredictable, so it’s crucial to stay informed about the weather conditions before heading out. Check the forecast and dress accordingly to protect yourself from extreme heat, cold, rain, or strong winds. Wearing appropriate clothing and accessories, such as hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent, can help shield you from the elements.

Stay Hydrated

Whether you’re hiking, running, or engaging in any outdoor activity, hydration is key. Carry a water bottle with you and sip on water frequently to prevent dehydration. For longer workouts or hot climates, consider bringing electrolyte-rich beverages to replenish essential minerals lost through sweat.

Warm Up and Cool Down

Don’t overlook the importance of warming up and cooling down, even when exercising outdoors. Prioritize a dynamic warm-up routine that targets all major muscle groups to prepare your body for the activity ahead. Likewise, finish your workout with a cool-down session, which includes gentle stretches to promote flexibility and prevent muscle soreness.

Buddy Up

Exercising with a friend not only makes the experience more enjoyable but also enhances safety. Choose a workout buddy or join a fitness group to keep each other motivated and provide support. Having someone by your side can also be helpful in case of any unexpected situations or emergencies.

Stay Alert and Be Mindful

When exercising outdoors, it’s crucial to be aware of your surroundings. Stay vigilant of traffic, uneven surfaces, obstacles, and any potential hazards. If you’re using headphones, keep the volume at a level where you can still hear approaching vehicles or people. Being present and mindful of your environment ensures a safer and more enjoyable workout.

Let Someone Know

Inform a friend or family member about your outdoor exercise plans, including your route and estimated time of return. Share your location through a tracking app or device, if possible. This step adds an extra layer of safety and ensures that someone knows where you are in case of an emergency.

Listen to Your Body

Pay attention to your body’s signals and never push yourself beyond your limits. If you experience unusual pain, discomfort, dizziness, or shortness of breath, take a break and seek medical attention if necessary. It’s important to prioritize your well-being and listen to what your body needs.

As the days get longer and the weather gets warmer, one of the things we’re most looking forward to is working out outside. There’s a time and a place for gym sessions, but exercising in the great outdoors allows us to enjoy the added benefits of fresh air and sunshine. That said, even on chilly days it’s important to protect skin from the sun’s rays. Not all sunscreens are created equal when it comes to sweat, but there are a few we trust to keep our skin safe during even the sweatiest outdoor workouts. Read on for our top picks.

Supergoop! Play Everyday Lotion

This sweat-and-water-proof sunscreen provides broad-spectrum SPF 50 protection for up to 80 minutes. Its lightweight formula is anything but greasy and contains sunflower and rosemary leaf to nourish skin and help prevent acne. It’s also reef-friendly, so it’s a great option if your workout plans include swimming in the ocean.

Coola Classic Sunscreen in Peach Blossom

For those who prefer a bit more protection, we love Coola Classic Body Sunscreen in SPF 70. It’s made with organic ingredients including antioxidant-rich essential oils and peach flower extract to keep skin smelling fresh and clean.

Blue Lizard Sport Sunscreen

Australian sunscreen brand Blue Lizard’s Sport Mineral Spray is gentle enough to use on sensitive skin, yet strong enough to protect it from sunburns. It absorbs quickly, dries clear, and stays resistant to water and sweat for up to 80 minutes.

Outdoor workouts can be great for your mind, body, and soul, and they bring a long list of benefits that you wouldn’t experience while working indoors. If you’re struggling to discover the magic of working out outside, these three tips will help you fall in love with outdoor workouts and never look back.

Right Activity

The list of activities that you can do outdoors is pretty much endless and it all comes down to finding the right one. Take some time to figure out which activity is the best pick for you before settling on one that fits your interests and fitness goals.

Switch Things Up

If you find out that you enjoy several different outdoor activities in equal measure, there’s no harm in adding more than one to your workout schedule. This can do wonders for your motivation and fitness level because you can switch between different activities based on your mood.

Perfect Balance

In addition to switching things up between different outdoor workouts, you can also switch between working out indoors and outdoors. If the weather is too bad to work out outside or the moment simply doesn’t feel right, you can always work out indoors and return to your outdoor workouts the next day.

We love the gym, but there’s something about working out outside that makes the experience much more enjoyable. Maybe it’s the ability to people-watch as we work out or the fact that it provides us with an opportunity to spend a little time in nature, depending on where we go. It can be a bit tricky to accomplish all of our fitness goals without the convenience of weights and machines, but we don’t like to let that stop us. There are plenty of companies that now offer portable, easy-to-clean equipment perfect for use in an outdoor setting. Here are some of the pieces we like to bring with us wherever we workout:

Tangram LED Smart Rope

Jumping rope has never been safer or more fun with this light-up jump rope by Tangram. It can connect to your smartphone to track jump counts, workout times, and more!

Lululemon Reversible Mat

Lululemon’s yoga mats are made with an antimicrobial additive to prevent them from becoming a home for mold and mildew, so they’re perfect for outdoor workouts. Beyond just yoga, they’re also great for mat pilates and bodyweight strength exercises.

Bala Bangles

Traditional weights can be heavy and awkward to carry, so we love using wrist and ankle weights whenever we want to get a good workout outdoors. Fitness brand Bala makes weights in 1 and 2 lb. options available in seven different colors!

Outdoor workouts come with a long list of benefits, but it’s difficult to enjoy them when you’re dealing with a heatwave. If you don’t want to give them up, you can still find a way to enjoy them to the fullest by picking the perfect time to do them.

Morning Workouts

Morning workouts come with a long list of benefits and they’re your best bet during hot summer months. To avoid high midday and mid-afternoon temperatures, set your alarm early and complete your workout as soon as you get up to avoid the heat—and the crowds.

Evening Workouts

If you’re not an early bird and want to avoid morning workouts at all costs, training late in the evening is your best bet. Wait until the sun goes down because the temperature will be significantly lower in the late evening and you’ll be able to get a more effective workout.

Shorter Sessions

If you’re struggling to find time to train early in the morning or late in the evening, find some shade and make your sessions shorter. By doing so, you’ll reduce the amount of time you’re exposed to the sun, and you can even consider splitting your workout into smaller sessions if you don’t want to be outside for too long.

After months spent training indoors, it’s finally time to take things outside and get back to outdoor workouts. This transition can be pretty exciting and fun, as long as you don’t ruin it by making these common mistakes.

Rushing Things

Committing to outdoor workouts can be tricky since you’ll have to deal with some issues you wouldn’t face at the gym. That’s why you should take things slow before easing into your new routine.

No Variety

There’s no need to push yourself to work outdoors when you don’t feel like it. Try to find the perfect balance between indoor and outdoor workouts, especially if you like them in equal measure.

Safety Protocols

Staying safe during your outdoor workouts should be one of your top priorities. Reflective clothes are highly recommended, and you should always remember to wear safety gear during your cycling adventures.

Weather Issues

Never head outside before checking the weather forecast. The weather may be nice now, but there’s still a chance that rain or wind could ruin your outdoor workout.

You either love running or absolutely hate it. If you fall into the latter, don’t worry—there are other ways to get moving outside without having to run. These five outdoor activities will have you staying active and you’ll forget you’re getting a workout. Plus, you’ll get to spend time in the sun.

Cycling

Running can be hard on your joints, but cycling is a great alternative because it’s low-impact. You can add cycling into your daily routine or you can use it as a way to explore the city.

Tennis

Get your best tennis outfit ready and hit the court. You’ll get a great workout and you can get your friends together for a doubles match.

Roller Skating

Roller skating has been taking over social media and it’s a total ode to the ’90s. You’ll feel like a child again, rolling around your neighborhood and you’ll work muscles you haven’t in years.

Hiking

Reconnect with nature and hit the trails. Make a hiking date with your partner and feel your stress levels reduce.

Volleyball

Make your beach days more active by playing a game of beach volleyball. It’s much better than sitting all day in the sun and you’ll connect with friends while getting an amazing workout.

Spring is arguably the most beautiful season of the year, which makes it an optimal time for outdoors workouts. If you’ve been finding yourself lacking motivation to start working on your fitness goals this spring, here are a few reasons why this season is the perfect time to get in shape.

Healthy Food

Maintaining a healthy diet is so much easier during the spring and summer because there are plenty of fresh veggies and fruits to enjoy. Now is the perfect time to visit the farmer’s market, stock up on healthy produce, and try healthy recipes.

Ideal Temperature

After the cold winter months, it’s time to go outside and enjoy the perfect spring weather. Spring season is ideal for outdoor activities because it’s still not too hot outside, so make sure to get the most out of it. If you ever wanted to take up running, cycling, or hiking, spring is the ideal season to do it.

Improve Your Mood and Mental Health

Spending time outside in the fresh air and absorbing vitamin D is a great way to improve your mood after the gloomy winter months. Some studies have shown that spending more time in nature can improve our mental health, which is more than a good reason to take your workouts outside.

After months of working out from the comfort of our homes, the weather is finally getting good enough for training in the fresh air. If you’re looking forward to getting back to outdoor workouts, but aren’t sure how to make a switch, these three useful tips will get you there.

Take It Easy

Outdoor workouts come with a long list of benefits, but they will also have you facing obstacles that you don’t have to deal with at home. It will take some time to adjust to this change of pace, and you shouldn’t put too much pressure on yourself in the beginning.

Baby Steps

Speaking of taking it easy, there’s no need to fully switch to outdoor workouts right away. Take baby steps and ease into a new routine over time. Start with one outdoor workout a week and add more fresh-air workouts into your schedule as the time goes by.

Safety First

Running or cycling outdoors can be scary and it’s important to put extra effort into staying safe. Make sure you’re wearing reflective clothing to increase your visibility, and know what’s waiting for you on your outdoor route to avoid unexpected surprises.

Spring is almost here and many of us are going to be thinking about taking our workouts outside pretty soon. While outdoor workouts are awesome and extremely beneficial, we all have to do our best to stay safe, especially women. Here are a few useful tips that can help you stay safe outside.

Bring a Buddy

Going for a walk or run alone at night is scary for most women because they don’t feel safe, which is totally normal. However, inviting a friend or a training partner is a good way to stay safe during your walk or a run, and it’ll also make your workouts more fun.

Mix Up Your Routine

Changing your workout routine every once in a while is also a useful tip for reducing your chances of being targeted. Running a new route every day, for example, is a good way to increase your safety but also to make workouts more fun.

Mute the Music

We know that listening to music is one of the best ways to push yourself through a tough workout. However, turning off the music, or at least keeping the volume low, is pretty important if you want to increase your safety while working out alone outside.

Always Carry Your Phone

Needless to say that you want to bring your phone with you every time you go outside to exercise and to always let someone know where you are.
