A martial art characterized by slow movements and deep breathing, Tai Chi is relied upon by many as a means of relaxing and finding their inner peace. While a peaceful activity, this is also a form of exercise with rich wellness benefits. Here are some of the main reasons why you should consider taking up Tai Chi as part of your lifestyle.

Reduce Stress

A study has shown that tai chi is able to reduce stress to the same extent as regular exercise. What’s more, the breathing techniques and meditation aspects of Tai Chi provide an added level of tranquility that alternatives lack.

Better Sleep

By helping you to reduce stress and find tranquility, Tai Chi can give you a more peaceful sleep. As a result, you’ll be able to boost your energy and have an easier time when you face each day.

Improves Mood

When you feel calmer and get an opportunity to find tranquility as tai chi provides, you’ll be able to destress, thereby improving your mood. Tai Chi’s deep breathing techniques and fluid movements will help to alleviate your anxiety and clear your mind, contributing to your overall happiness.

When the stressors of life begin to take a toll, mindfulness can help us find clarity and calm. One of the most common ways to practice mindfulness involves meditation, but for some people, sitting on a cushion and focusing on their breath is easier said than done. If you can relate, know that your mindfulness practice doesn’t have to take any particular form. There are plenty of mindfulness-based activities you can use to achieve tranquility instead. Here are a few we especially love.

Coloring

Coloring isn’t just for kids—it’s a great practice for grownups looking to relax and be creative as well. Pick up an adult coloring book or print out pages online, then put on some music and get into the zone as you fill in the pictures. Focusing all of your attention on the lines and colors will keep your mind in the present moment and allow you to cultivate a sense of mental clarity.

Nature Walks

Spending time in nature has been scientifically proven to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which can help us to be more present and evoke a sense of inner peace. Head to your local park, forest, or beach—anywhere you feel called, and take a leisurely walk. Be mindful of the sights and sounds around you, noticing any sensations that arise within your body as you go.

Journaling

When you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, writing is one of the best ways to process your thoughts and emotions. Choose a special journal that you can dedicate specifically to your mindfulness practice, then dedicate some time each day to get all of your feelings down on paper. We especially recommend taking a free-form approach to allow space for full and authentic self-expression.

Anxiety has become a hot topic in the wellness corners of social media over the last few years, and we have to admit that we’re happy to see what was once a highly sensitive subject starting to become destigmatized. Feelings of anxiety are something that almost everyone will experience at some point in life, but there are certain practices that can make them easier to manage. Stimulating the vagus nerve, in particular, activates the parasympathetic nervous system and is one of the most effective ways to bring the mind and body back into balance. Read on to learn more about a few different vagus nerve stimulation techniques.

Deep Breathing

Taking slow, deep breaths causes your diaphragm to move rhythmically, massaging the vagus nerve and sending a message to your body that it’s safe to relax. Practice by inhaling deeply through your nose for a count of four, holding for a count of seven, and exhaling through your mouth for a count of eight. If these times feel like too much of a challenge, simply focus on extending the length of your exhales so that they’re longer than your inhales. Repeat this cycle 4-8 times.

Physical Activity

Exercise, especially activities like yoga or tai chi that incorporate deep breathing, encourages better vagal tone and can help move the nervous system from a sympathetic fight-or-flight state toward the parasympathetic rest-and-digest. You don’t have to work up a sweat to reap the benefits—even passive asanas such as Child’s Pose or Happy Baby are enough.

Cold Exposure

This one is a bit more controversial, and it should definitely be practiced with a healthy dose of caution, but research does show that exposing yourself to a few minutes of cold is an effective way to stimulate the vagus nerve. If you’re up for it, try ending your daily shower with a few seconds of cold water, or use a cold compress on your face as a gentler, more contained option.

Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a key role in several important bodily functions such as energy production and nerve and bone health. It’s found mainly in beans and whole grains, and while it’s certainly possible to obtain magnesium through a balanced diet, magnesium supplements are an additional option for those who struggle to meet their daily requirements. However, there are several different types of magnesium supplements, so it’s important to be aware of which one is right for you before starting a magnesium regimen. Here’s more about the most common kinds of magnesium supplements and the pros and cons that they offer.

Types of Magnesium

Magnesium Citrate

This type of magnesium is highly bioavailable, meaning it’s easy for the body to absorb. It’s usually used to support digestive health and can help relieve constipation by promoting bowel movements. However, it can also cause an upset stomach when consumed in high doses, so start with smaller amounts and increase as needed.

Magnesium Glycinate

Magnesium glycinate is a popular choice for those looking to relax and manage stress, especially when taken before bed. Of all of the different types of magnesium supplements, it’s the most easily absorbed and is less likely to cause digestive issues as a result.

Magnesium Oxide

This form of magnesium tends to work well as an antacid for heartburn, though it can also cause gastrointestinal discomfort due to its low absorption rate. In general, magnesium oxide should be avoided by those who have kidney problems.

Other Considerations

If you’re considering adding magnesium to your supplement routine, it’s best to talk with your doctor to determine the right type and dosage for your individual needs. This is especially important if you take certain medications, as they may interact with magnesium supplements and cause additional health risks.

Hey there fitness enthusiasts! Are you guilty of skipping rest days in your workout routine? Or do you think that taking a break will only hinder your progress? Think again! Contrary to popular belief, rest days are not a sign of weakness, but rather a crucial component of any fitness program. Here’s why rest days are more important than you think and how they can help you achieve your fitness goals.

Recovery and Repair

First of all, rest days give your muscles time to recover and repair. When you exercise, you create tiny tears in your muscle fibers. These tears need time to heal to grow stronger and bigger. If you don’t allow enough time for your muscles to recover, you’ll be doing more harm than good, and you might even end up with an injury.

Prevents Burnout

Secondly, rest days are important for preventing burnout. Working out can be physically and mentally demanding, and if you push yourself too hard without taking breaks, you’ll eventually hit a wall. Taking a day or two off every week can help you avoid burnout and keep you motivated in the long run.

Time to Focus on Other Important Things

Thirdly, rest days give you a chance to focus on other aspects of your health and fitness. You can use your rest day to stretch, foam roll, or practice yoga. You can also use the time to meal prep, plan your workouts for the rest of the week, or catch up on sleep. This will ultimately help you to feel better and perform better during your workouts.

Muscles Get Stronger on Rest Day

Another reason why rest days are important is because they can actually help you build muscle. When you work out, you’re breaking down muscle tissue. It’s during the rest days that your body rebuilds that tissue and makes it stronger. If you don’t take rest days, you won’t give your body enough time to rebuild, and you’ll end up plateauing or even losing muscle mass.

Whether you’re a regular mediator and want to deepen your practice or just in need of a little relaxation, sound baths may be just the thing for you. Sound bathing is a form of meditation that incorporates sound waves to promote relaxation and healing. During a sound bath, meditators lie down or sit comfortably while a facilitator plays singing bowls, gongs, and chimes. While there’s definitely something to be said for the experience of a live session, there are plenty of sound bath recordings available on YouTube which are just as effective. Here are a few we love and recommend.

1 Hour Chakra Cleanse

Chakras are energy centers associated with physical and spiritual well-being according to ancient Indian tradition. This sound bath uses seven bowls, each with a distinct vibration to help you connect with the energy of each center. It’ll leave you with a full body feeling of calm.

10 Minute Crystal Singing Bowl Meditation

This sound bath by yoga teacher Jessica Richburg is a short and sweet option for when you’re short on time. She uses three bowls to create relaxing sounds which melt away stress and soothe the mind and body.

Total Calm Sound Bath Performance

For a more dynamic experience, we love this performance by sound bath facilitator Healing Vibrations. It incorporates over 10 instruments including crystal bowls, chimes, and drums and makes a beautiful accompaniment for any meditation or even spa treatment.

Winding down after a long, busy day can be tricky. Sometimes it requires a bit of effort to switch from work to relaxation mode, but making the transition is essential for getting high-quality rest. When we’ve had a hectic day, we find a little yoga can be just the thing to help us move into a peaceful night. One of our favorite teachers is Jessica Richburg, a 500-hr. certified instructor with a talent for creating calming flows that always leave us feeling ready for bed. Here are a few of her classes we love.

“Yoga For A Relaxing Night’s Sleep”

This 10-minute routine is perfect for those nights when you’re just too tired to roll out your mat. It can be done from the comfort of your bed using nothing but a couple of pillows for support. You’ll be ready for sleep before savasana is finished.

“20 Minute Evening Yoga”

If tight muscles are getting in the way of a good night’s sleep, try this 20-minute class designed to create space and ease in the body. It contains plenty of deep stretches and ends with a long savasana to help you stay calm and comfortable all night long.

“Yin Yoga Class With Props”

For those super stressful days where you really need a bit of quiet time, we recommend this one-hour yin yoga class. It includes gentle stretches with long holds to help release tension from the body. Use the recommended props to make it feel extra restorative.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, right? For some of us, sure, but for others, all of the seasonal hustle and bustle can leave us feeling more frustrated than festive. Planning, prepping, and present-wrapping require a lot of time and energy, so it’s important to take some time to de-stress to prevent burnout. One of our favorite ways to practice self-care is with yoga. A good class can help us to feel grounded and restored so that we can handle whatever the season brings.

Yoga for Anxiety and Stress

Yoga with Adriene’s class for reducing stress is one of the most popular on YouTube for a reason—she never fails to give us exactly what we need. It starts off with slow, gentle movements and guided breathwork and then incorporates some more dynamic movement and balancing poses before finishing off with a few minutes of hip stretches before savasana.

Restorative Yoga for Stress Relief

This slow-paced class by Jessica Richburg includes lots of deep stretching and grounding poses like child’s pose, pigeon, and spinal twists. It ends with an extra-long guided savasana, making it ideal for winding down at the end of the day.

10 Minute Yoga Stress and Anxiety

This class by Yoga with Bird is perfect for when you’re in need of some R&R but also pressed for time. It’s full of gentle hip stretches and twists and is just long enough to leave you feeling refreshed and reset.

Anxiety has become a hot topic in the wellness corners of social media over the last few years, and we have to admit that we’re happy to see what was once a highly sensitive subject starting to become destigmatized. Are you feeling stressed, tired, or just need a bit of a pick-me-up? If so, self-massage might be just the thing for you. Self-massage is a great way to practice physical and mental self-care and, when done properly, can reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow, and promote relaxation. What’s more, you can do it from the comfort of your own home for free! If you’re interested in adding self-massage to your self-care routine, try following along with these simple instructional videos:

Self-Massage for Neck and Shoulders

While there’s nothing like receiving a neck massage from another person, this 15-minute self-massage routine is fantastic in a pinch. Massage therapist Ann Swanson demonstrates reflexology techniques to release tension in the trapezius muscles, which tend to become tight as a result of hours spent working at a desk.

Easy 10-Minute Everyday Full-Face Massage

This video by Ksenija of TheMoments is a quick and effective option for when you’re looking to relax and relieve tension in the neck and face. It includes a variety of techniques to stimulate the lymphatic system and can even improve skin texture and elasticity when practiced regularly.

Simple Self-Massage for Foot Pain

Physical therapists-turned-YouTubers Bob & Brad demonstrate how to relieve foot pain naturally in this 7-minute follow-along foot massage video. It includes tutorials for three simple techniques designed to improve circulation and soothe aching feet.
