It’s extremely important to hydrate properly before your workouts, and the drink you choose can make all the difference. Many people turn to carbonated drinks before hitting the gym, but this isn’t a great idea for more reasons than one. Here’s why drinking soda before your workouts can do you more harm than good.

Bloating

Bloating is one of the most common side effects of drinking soda before heading to the gym. Fizzy drinks can cause bloating, abdominal pain, and gas, so it’s best to avoid them so you can go through your workouts without digestive discomfort.

Sugar Overload

One of the reasons why soda is best avoided, both before and after the gym, is its high sugar content. The sugar rush you experience from drinking soda can help you power through your workout, but it won’t do you any good in the long run. Even diet sodas aren’t that great since they might lead to migraines and dizziness due to the artificial sweeteners they contain.

Dehydration

Dehydration is another major side effect of drinking carbonated drinks before hitting the gym. Since soda contains significant amounts of sodium, which draws water out of the body’s cells, it can leave you dehydrated, so it’s best avoided before your training sessions.

While regular sodas contains about 140 calories per can, diet sodas seem like a God’s gift that comes with zero calories, no matter how much you drink. It seems logical that it would be a great aid for weight loss, but several studies (like this one and this one) have shown that drinking diet soda is linked to gaining weight. And while some of the scientists are skeptical and believe that these correlations can be accidental, studies keep proving that there’s definitely a link between these two things. Here are the reasons why drinking diet sodas can lead to weight gain.

Insulin Production

When you drink diet soda, your pancreas produces insulin to deal with anticipated sugar because of the sweet taste you feel, but since no sugar actually enters your blood your body gets confused. This can lead to several health problems like higher blood pressure and weight gain.

They Make You Crave Sugar

While they don’t contain any sugar per se, diet sodas are sweet in taste and will make you crave sugar which can lead to weight gain.

Psychological Effect

Since you’re drinking a zero-calorie beverage, you may feel entitled to eat more and, thanks to insulin, your body will store that extra food as fat instead of using it as energy.

The list of beverages you should avoid before working out is pretty long, but carbonated drinks are somewhere on top. No matter how much you’re craving a can of soda before hitting the gym, you should probably wait a little bit. Here are three reasons why.

Can lead to bloating

Bloating and fizzy drinks, such as soda and seltzer, pretty much go hand in hand. Excess air will end up building up in your stomach if you consume an extensive amount of this beverage, and it certainly won’t improve your workout. Feeling bloated will slow you down and hinder your performance.

Loaded with sugar

High sugar content in these drinks may lead to a sugar crash and eventually interfere with the benefits of exercise. After the initial rush of energy fades away, you’ll be left feeling weak and tired because your blood sugar is suddenly too low.

Stomach cramps

Drinking soda can also cause abdominal pain and gas, making your training even more uncomfortable. High sugar content in these beverages is the reason why you might be feeling stomach cramps and nausea during your workout.
