Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (or DOMS) is a normal part of working out that happens when you haven’t used a certain muscle in a while or push yourself harder than usual. It usually hits about 24 – 72 hours after your workout and it can range from being mildly unpleasant to so painful you can barely sit down on the toilet. If you’re suffering from a bad case of DOMS right now, here are some tips to help you get through.

Be Prepared to Wait

The truth is that most of the DOMS tips out there like taking Epsom salt baths or icing your muscles may provide some temporary relief, but they aren’t actually going to make your DOMS go away any faster. Nothing is going to end your DOMS other than time, so just be prepared for it to take between 1 and 5 days until your DOMS is gone all the way.

Don’t Push Yourself

If you’re used to a workout regimen that has you in the gym multiple times a week, you might find yourself in the situation in which you have DOMS but are supposed to work out those same muscles again. Pro tip: don’t do it. It’s only going to make the DOMS worse. Your muscles need time to properly recover before you put them through the wringer once more.

Walk Around

That being said, being totally sedentary isn’t going to help either. Getting your blood flowing can help your DOMS hurt a lot less, so at least try to get up and walk around a little bit every so often while you’re recovering.

After lifting heavy weights, going for a long run, or doing HIIT workouts, you can expect to feel sore. While it’s a reality, what’s not fun is waking up and feeling achy. In addition to exercise, what you do during the day can also make you feel sore. Luckily, there are steps you can take to prevent waking up and feeling sore. Here are five tips to reduce morning soreness.

Use the Right Pillow

Everyone has a different sleeping style, which affects the pillow they should use. In general, your pillow should support the natural curve of your neck and align your head, neck, and spine when you’re lying down.

Be More Active

While exercise can making you feel sore, it also keeps your joints lubricated and your muscles strong, making your body feel better. Try and move more throughout the day, especially if you have a sedentary job.

Meditate or Stretch Before Bed

Mediating or stretching before bed helps your mind and body stay relaxed while you sleep.

Eat Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Add more berries, vegetables, fatty fish, hot peppers, avocados, and nuts to your diet, which are packed with anti-inflammatory properties. Reduce the amount of refined carbs, sugar, and processed meats you eat.

Get More Vitamin D

Vitamin D plays a huge part in muscle health, so aim to get between 10-15 minutes of sunlight a day and eat more fortified dairy, fatty fish, and egg yolks.

Having sore muscles is the worst. It’s part of starting a new workout program and it usually happens within 24-48 hours of exercising. But, just because your sore it doesn’t mean you can’t still workout. Here are some exercises you can still do.

Low Intensity

When you’re sore working out can actually speed up the recovery process because moving your body and increasing your heart rate increases the blood flow to your damaged muscle tissue. Just make sure to keep it light to avoid injuring yourself. Walking and hiking are great options.

Use Light Resistance

Light exercises can be as effective as massages at getting rid of muscle soreness. Make sure you aren’t working the same muscle groups over multiple days as this can cause soreness. Try warming up with cardio, using resistance bands, and foam rolling.
