]]>Made from 50% total recycled content The new sneakers are an upgrade to the Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT%, which are most popular among long-distance runners (including record-breaking marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge). Nike incorporated the use of innovative materials, and principles of circular release, according to a press release.
The idea was to design a shoe that will not fall short of the innovative NEXT% shoe in terms of the function of performance, in a way that would reduce material waste and impact. Product testing by athletes involved logging 400 miles or more of rigorous activity to make sure the shoes actually performed well.
The Air Zoom Alphafly Next Nature is not the only environment-focused Nike project. The brand is currently working on drastically reducing and ultimately eliminating its carbon emissions and waste. These new production processes will be implemented on the majority of the Nike running line. The new sneakers are expected to go on sale later in September and their price is yet to be announced.

]]>In order to cut costs, clothing workers often work in poor conditions with long hours, low pay, and unsafe environments. These conditions are more likely in developing countries. It’s better to buy activewear made in the U.S., but if you don’t, look for companies that are certified by Fair Trade USA, which makes sure the factories are following internationally-recognized labor standards and that the workers have fair and safe conditions. These factories also have to work towards producing less waste.
For sustainable fabrics, stay away from polyester and nylon, and opt for natural fabrics like organic cotton, lyocell, cotton scarps, TENCEL, and plant-based materials.
Dyed fabrics account for a huge percentage of industrial water pollution worldwide. Natural dyes aren’t often used with activewear because they tend to change in sunlight and after washing. When possible, try and choose fabrics that are made with waterless dying techniques.
