Thanksgiving dinner is one of the staples of this holiday, but some of the dishes that we’ll be putting on the table aren’t that healthy. If you’re looking for a way to make them a little bit better, these quick fixes will help you put a healthy twist on some of the beloved Thanksgiving dishes.

Green Bean Casserole

Green bean casserole may sound healthy on paper, but it includes high amounts of certain ingredients that are best consumed in moderation—starting with cheese.

Turkey Stuffing

Sausage or bacon are usually used as the main ingredients in turkey stuffing, but they’re best used in smaller amounts or replaced with healthier, plant-based ingredients.

Mashed Potatoes

Mashed potatoes are one of the dishes that no Thanksgiving can go without, and there are many ways to make them healthier. Cutting down on butter and replacing some of the potatoes with cauliflower is a good place to start, but you can also cut down on calories and fat by skipping gravy.

Apple Pie

Apple pie is another beloved staple of the holiday season, and you can put a healthy twist on it by ditching whipped cream and replacing canned apple pie filling with a homemade version.

In addition to the amazing food, Thanksgiving is all about honoring traditions and spending time with your family. While Thanksgiving this year is going to be different, one tradition you can still do is your holiday 5K. Even though this won’t be a Turkey Trot or look the same as races in the past, here are some ways to keep the tradition going.

Create a Meaningful Route

Now’s the time to run at the park or trail you’ve been wanting to race at or to revisit an old route you loved. You can even make the run more special by passing by friends or family member’s houses and waving as you run by.

Make a Relay

Turn your virtual race into a relay by running a few miles before passing them off to a friend or family member in person or virtually. You’ll be keeping each other accountable and cheering each other on.

Dress Up

Dress up in turkey costumes or matching apparel to add some excitement and nuance to your run.

Have Prizes

Who doesn’t like some competition? You don’t have to spend a lot to have prizes for the winners. You can create little prizes like a cup of coffee at your favorite cafe or not having to do chores.

Thanksgiving, the holiday we look forward to all year long, but that we also dread if we’re trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle and stick to our diets. This holiday doesn’t have to set you back on your goals and these tips will help you enjoy the festive food, while also maintaining your diet.

Stay Active

Begin your day with a turkey trot or some yoga, or end your meal with a quiet walk outside with your family. All the food we eat makes us tired and it’s our inclination to nap, but exercising after a meal helps aid digestion.

Eat Breakfast

Our first thought when we think about all the calories we will be taking in at our Thanksgiving meal is to compensate by skipping breakfast or lunch. In actuality, this is a bad idea because by the time the turkey lands on the table you’ll be so hungry, which will lead you to overeat.

Choose Your Favorites

It’s hard to avoid all the pies and cakes, so don’t be afraid to indulge in a couple of your favorites. The worst thing you can do is restrict yourself because it almost always leads to binging. Thanksgiving only occurs once a year, so go ahead and enjoy your pecan pie.

Be Mindful of Portions

Thanksgiving food is heavy; the sauces, high fat-entrees, and sugary desserts add up quickly. Be mindful of the ratios of foods you put onto your plates. In general, 1/2 your plate should be vegetables, 1/4 your plate should be proteins, and 1/4 should be whole grains or nutrient-rich carbs.
