In this day and age, there are countless methods to keep track of our schedule. There are ways to make sure we’re holding up our end of the bargain when it comes to working out—and yet so often we don’t utilize the tools we’re offered. We’re here to not only convince you of the importance of keeping track of your workouts. We believe that you should actually keep a physical workout journal, and here’s why.

Holding Yourself Accountable

In just about every avenue of life, holding yourself accountable is a major lesson we all must learn at some point. It’s one thing for someone else to hold you accountable, but doing it for yourself is a whole other ballgame. You might think you can do it on your own—but when you write it down in a journal it becomes real.

The Written Word

While our thesis can be lent to notepads on your smartphone, we’d like to discourage that. We believe that actually having a physical notebook logging your workouts feels a lot different than taking care of it digitally. When you complete a workout task, there’s no greater feeling than crossing it off with an actual pen. Take our word for it—it’ll help you complete your goals!

There are all kinds of ways to hold yourself accountable when it comes to staying active and fit. One of them is to keep a journal and we’re not talking about a digital journal that you “keep” on your smartphone. We’re talking about a physical journal that requires you to write in it with a pen and pencil. Here’s why we think it’s a great idea if you’re trying to stay in shape.

Make Plans

In the beginning of the week, write down exactly what you want to accomplish throughout the week. Specify which day you’re going to accomplish which things, how long you want it to take, and approximately what time you’d want to do them. Every time you get something done, check it off your list. If you operate like this, you’ll find yourself getting things done more efficiently and effectively.

More Personal Accountability

Writing in your journal with your own handwriting takes this level of accountability to a whole new level. Forget about doing it on your phone—there’s something truly personal about writing it with a pen that makes you almost emotionally invested in “coming through for yourself”. Whoever said the old ways of doing things were over?

If you’re looking for a way to track your fitness progress, a workout journal will get you there, but it takes a while to get a hang of it. If you already have a fitness journal, but you’re struggling to commit to it, these useful tips will help you stay more consistent.

Extra Effort

Beginnings are hard, and it will be difficult to commit to your workout journal if you bail from the get-go. You should put extra effort into journaling in the first few days or weeks. Later on, journaling will become a force of habit and you’ll do it regularly without even thinking about it.

Essential Part

It’s tough to commit to journaling if you don’t treat it as an essential part of your fitness routine. If you constantly find yourself skipping this step, it’s time to change your mindset about it. Treat it with the same kind of attention you give to preparing your pre-workout snacks, putting on your activewear, and showering after each gym session.

Scheduled Time

If no other strategy works, you can always try scheduling your workout journal sessions. It’s best to do it right after hitting the gym, while your memory is still fresh.
