Yin yoga is having a moment. Most of us in the west are used to practicing yang yoga styles like vinyasa, ashtanga, and power yoga which are active, fast, and high-energy. Yin yoga, on the other hand, is slower, gentler, and more meditative. It offers a chance to connect with the ground and tune in with your body and mind.

What is Yin Yoga?

Yin yoga is a relaxed and gentle form of yoga that involves long poses, deep breathing, and poses that target your deep connective tissues. It is based on ancient Eastern philosophy and Taoist principles.

The goal of a yin yoga class is to focus on each individual asana, rather than moving through them in a dynamic sequence. A pose may be held for anywhere from 3-20 minutes. Poses usually focus on stretching deeper tissues in the spine, hips, sacrum, and shoulders.

Who Will Benefit From Yin Yoga?

We believe EVERYONE can benefit from yin yoga! It’s ideal for beginners or for people who want to balance a gentle yoga practice with more intensive workouts. Yin yoga can also be great for anyone suffering from stress, anxiety, PTSD, or other mental health issues.

What are the Benefits of Yin Yoga?

The benefits of yin yoga are thought to include:

  • Lengthened connective tissue
  • Increased flexibility and mobility
  • Improved circulation
  • Reduced stress levels
  • Improved sleep
  • Enhanced mental focus

Is your yoga practice feeling a little stagnant? Now is a great time to make some improvements. Yoga is amazingly beneficial for both body and mind, and those benefits will be even greater if you commit to making these small improvements to deepen your practice.

Be Consistent

Carve out time for your yoga practice at least three times per week. If you can’t take classes that often, be sure to show up on the mat at home. Even if you’re exhausted and your practice just looks like child’s pose for 15 minutes, this will help you to build regular yoga practice into your routine.

Arrive Early

Arriving hot and flustered as the class is beginning is never a good start! When heading to yoga classes, arrive 5-10 minutes early. This will give you time to find a good spot, take a sip of water and get into the ‘zone’.

Use Props

Using blankets, blocks and straps can help make your practice deeper and more varied, and will allow you to make adjustments to suit your own body and abilities.

Show Up for Shavasana

Shavasana or ‘corpse pose’ at the end of your yoga practice is a precious timeโ€”make the most of it! It can be tempting to duck out early or mentally return to your to-do list but focus on your breathing and enjoy the restorative benefits of this meditative moment.
