Yogurt is one of the best things you can put in your body. Packed with protein and calcium, just one cup can provide almost half of your daily calcium needs, while also keeping you fuller for longer.

Honey, honey, how you thrill me! The sweet nectar might get a bad rap from the anti-sugar brigade, but we think its health benefits far outweigh that. Aside from being a natural sweetener, honey can be used to treat illnesses and give your skin a glow. Here are 3 ways to get the most out of the sweet stuff.

Antibacterial

Bees knew what they were doing when creating this sticky substance. During production, they impart a protein that kills bacteria and boosts your immune system. So, next time you cut yourself, you might want to take advantage of honey’s antibacterial properties.

Eases Coughing

Coughs are annoying. They are either the symptom that starts the illness or the one that decides to linger around long after. According to studies, honey is actually more effective than cough syrup when it comes to kids, so give them a spoonful at night to ease the irritation.

Skin Treatment

The benefits that honey has on your skin are almost endless! It can be used to moisturize, cleanse pores, diminish the signs of aging, lighten pigmentation, and prevent breakouts, not to mention give your skin a gorgeous glow!

Headaches have a habit of springing up at the most inconvenient times. While it would be great to lie down and close our eyes until our head stops pounding, that isn’t so easy to do with work, school, and other life commitments.

It’s times like these when painkillers are our best friends. For many of us, ibuprofen is strong enough to do the trick. It is a key ingredient in medications like Advil and Motrin.

But ibuprofen does have one requirement: it should not be taken on an empty stomach.

Ibuprofen falls into a category known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) which also includes asprin and naproxen sodium, more commonly known as Aleve.

NSAIDs have a habit of upsetting one’s stomach, which is why the FDA recommends that they be consumed with food or milk. This is because they lower the production of prostaglandin reduces the amount of stomach acid.

But what happens in those moments when your head feels like it might explode and you realise that you haven’t eaten for a while?

Your stomach should be able to tolerate the occasional tablet on an empty tummy, even though the irritation of the lining might leave you slightly nauseated.

If you are taking NSAIDs on a more regular basis, or in high doses, it is recommended that you put some food in your system beforehand. Snacks with fat or protein work best because they digest slower, so have some cheese and crackers or an apple with peanut butter.

An intense workout can feel amazing, but it can also leave your body feeling rather parched! It is always important to drink water after exercising—especially if you’ve broken a sweat.

If you’re a fan of H2O (and we hope you are), you’re probably quite familiar with the taste. So you may have noticed that the liquid tastes a tad different after working out. The first sip of water post-exercise is always blissful, but you may find that it tastes a little sweeter, too.

In case you thought you were imagining it—don’t worry, you aren’t.

According to science, water really does taste sweeter after a strenuous workout. Researchers have found that the intensity and sensitivity to sweetness increases after severe exercise.

Another possible reason has to do with your body entering ketosis. Performing aerobics for an hour and 45 minutes can place your body in a metabolic state where it burns fat for energy due to a lack of carbohydrates.

As the body breakdowns ketones for energy, it can result in sweeter breath which could affect the flavor of water.

Taste aside, it is essential to rehydrate your body after working out, so get sipping!

Our brains like to trick us. Although they have the ability to find solutions, recall information, and come up with ideas, they also have a habit of sometimes making us feel unsafe even when we perfectly are. That sensation often kicks off your body’s fight or flight response and causes anxiety.

If any of this sounds familiar, these techniques may help.

Diaphragmatic Breathing

Place one hand on your stomach and the other hand on your chest. Slowly breathe into the one on your stomach. Aim for inhalations that are 4-5 seconds long and hold it in if you can. When exhaling, take your time, drawing your belly in toward your spine.

Alternate Nostril Breathing

Yogis will be familiar with this technique. Close your right nostril with your thumb and inhale through your left nostril. Then, place your index pointer finger over your left nostril, release your thumb, and exhale through your right nostril. Repeat on the other side.

4-7-8 Breathing

This technique can be performed standing, sitting, or lying down. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds and then exhale slowly for 8 seconds. Do this at least 6 times.

Believe it or not, Jennifer Aniston is in her mid-50s. The Morning Show actress looks like a woman half her age and a lot of that has to do with her fitness. Aniston believes in four key rules when it comes to staying in shape.

Water

If you’re not hydrated, you’re not happy. The 54-year-old drinks a lot of water everyday which clearly helps her skin glow. According to health experts, women should be drinking 2.7 liters of water per day, and 3.7 liters for when. So get sipping!

Movement

The starlet is a big fan of Pvolve, which is a science-led method that combines low-impact functional fitness with resistance-based equipment. “I leave every workout feeling energized and strong, but not beat up,” she says. “Whatever your fitness level, it’s a workout where you can truly start where you are.”

Whole Foods

No, we’re not just talking about the grocery store. Aniston famously ate the same salad everyday while on the Friends set. Whole foods include fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes, with as limited an amount of processed foods as possible.

Sleep

“[Sleep] is challenging for me,” she admits. “But it’s so important. I feel it when I don’t get enough rest.” Sleep is the secret to mental and physical health, and just as important as a healthy diet and exercise. You should be getting a minimum of 7 hours a night.

You don’t need us to tell you that life is stressful. Although some stress can be a motivating factor, too much can also make you feel completely overwhelmed. A racing heart is an indicator that you may be feeling too stressed — here are some ways to help slow down your pulse.

Practice Deep Breathing

Taking deep breaths is one of the quickest ways to lower your heart rate. Sit down in a quiet place if possible and take a deep breath in through your nose, filling your lungs with air. Hold your breath for a few seconds, and then exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat this for a few minutes, focusing only on your breath.

The 4-7-8 Technique

This breathing technique involves inhaling for four seconds, holding your breath for seven seconds, and then exhaling for eight seconds. It should help to lower your heart rate quickly and effectively.

Aromatherapy

Using essential oils has been proven to help reduce stress and anxiety. Lavender, chamomile, and ylang-ylang are excellent for relaxation and just a few drops in a diffuser can work wonders. You can rub a few drops onto your temples and wrists if you’re out and about when your heart rate rises.

They say that you are either a dog person, or a cat person. If you fall into the former category, there is a high chance that you feel the need to pet every dog that crosses your path. It can make getting to your destination a fairly delayed process.

But, as it turns out, you may be doing a lot for your mental health by engaging with those random pups.

Studies have shown that stroking dogs can be beneficial to your well-being as it lowers the level cortisol which is responsible for stress and anxiety. Interacting with the furry friends can provide a sense of calm and distract you from anxious thoughts.

In fact, it’s not only humans who reap the rewards. Play between people and pooches releases oxytocin which facilitates bonding and connection. As dogs are pack animals, this gives them a sense of belonging and purpose.

For all you cat lovers who are feeling a little left out, don’t worry. Researchers at Washington State University have found that petting a dog or cat can relieve stress in just 10 minutes.

So, next time you’re running 5 minutes late because you stopped to greet a pup on the street, remind yourself that it’s all in the name of mental health.

Remember way back when Gwyneth Paltrow told us about cupping? The Goop founder appeared at a film premiere with large circles on her back that had people wondering what on Earth had caused the marks.

While the round shapes resembled something out of a crop circle, they were actually the result of an alternative therapy that has been practiced in Asia for decades.

As with many alternative practices, it comes with a heavy load of skepticism. So what, exactly, is this cupping business that the Avengers actress spoke so highly of?

It is believed that the treatment relieves muscle tension and pain, promotes blood flow, and detoxes the body, making it an alternative—or even complementary—method to traditional practices like physiotherapy.

“Eastern medicine has a different approach than Western medicine — it’s more holistic,” Paltrow claims. “The root of the problem is addressed, as opposed to a symptom being attended to with prescription medication, only to return.”

Glass, plastic, or silicone suction cups are placed on the area needing work. After a few minutes, they are removed, leaving a red circle where the blood vessels have reacted to the change in pressure. It’s fairly pain-free.

The good news is that the marks disappear fairly quickly, but you can always rock them on a red carpet like Gwyneth.

Yogurt is one of the best things you can put in your body. Packed with protein and calcium, just one cup can provide almost half of your daily calcium needs, while also keeping you fuller for longer.

But perhaps one of yogurt’s most shining attributes is that it contains probiotics which can improve gut health, reduce inflammation, and boost immunity. Yogurt is way more than a breakfast food or quick snack; it makes a pretty delightful dessert with just a few tweaks.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Greek yogurt (whole or 2%)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  •  Pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. Place all the ingredients in the bowl of a stand mixer.
  2. Mix at low speed to start, then increase to high and whip for around 5 minutes until the mixture is thick and stiff.
  3. You can choose to refrigerate the parfait so it will thicken up even more, or serve it as is with fruit.
