More and more people are using ankle weights in their workout regimens and we couldn’t help but wonder if they are safe and useful or just another fitness trend. 

Ankle weights are affordable, don’t take too much space, and they are so easy to use. They are sometimes used as an alternative to dumbbells and can be very convenient for beginners. However, they shouldn’t be used for every exercise. Physical therapist Dr. Leada Malek spoke with Popsugar about the safe ways to use ankle weights.

“You can use ankle weights for most strengthening exercises, especially those that target the hips and legs,” she said. She added that light weights are also a good choice for wrists. They will add resistance and make a workout more challenging and more efficient for your muscles.

Dr. Malek warns that you should always start with lighter weights than you think. It’s important that you can tolerate the weight throughout the workout. One or two-pound weights are great to start with, even though they may seem too light. You can always gradually increase the weight as you progress.

It might sound silly, but wearing ankle weights while casually strolling around your neighborhood has many benefits including increasing your heart rate and helping your body burn more calories. The great news is that you can wear them while at work, as well. All you need to do is to walk as much as you can. Doing short walks like going to your colleague’s desk or using the stairs will improve your health.

You can also make your legs active even when you are seated at your desk. For example, tap your toes on the floor, swing your feet from side to side and cross one leg over the other frequently. It will help you burn calories and activate your leg muscles.

In the beginning, it might feel a little overwhelming, but your body will get used to the weights. Use them for half the day, and then remove them to avoid putting undue strain on your body.

It’s important that you keep your ankle weight to a maximum of 3 pounds and immediately remove them if you begin to experience any kind of pain. Also, to look professional, strap the weights to your body to keep them hidden. Your entire office doesn’t need to know that you are wearing ankle weights, right?
