When the cold winter months come rolling in, it can be tempting to reduce your workout levels and stay indoors. It’s not always pleasant exposing ourselves to the cold, especially when we’d rather just stay underneath our thick covers. However, evidence shows that moderate exposure to cold air and water can in fact have several health benefits!

Speeds Up Metabolism

Training in cold weather can speed up the rate of our metabolism, or the rate at which the body burns and uses fuel. A high metabolism means more energy, greater biological efficiency, and more effective fat-burning.

Increases Recovery Time

There’s also evidence that suggests that training in the cold can increase recovery time after a workout. That being said, make sure you get yourself indoors right when you’re done working out in order to warm up. Otherwise, too much exposure to the cold weather can actually damage your muscles.

Improves Immune System

Frequent exposure to the cold also helps our immune system function more efficiently. This could mean a lot of positive things for our bodies—including being more equipped to fight off illness and infection.

Enhances Energy and Mood

After training in the cold, many people report that they feel reborn—and that’s not a coincidence. It certainly does increase the release of happy hormones dopamine and serotonin.

Hot yoga has been trendy over the past few years, but cold workouts are gaining in popularity. Which leads us to thinking, is it better to exercise in cold temperatures or hotter ones?

Heat

You may be surprised to find out that heated things like saunas and hot tubs with temperatures from 100-180F cause an increase in blood flow and heart rate, which are the same effects that working out has on your body. But, exercising in heats of above 90F can be dangerous because it’s easier to get dehydrated. So just be mindful and drink lots of water if you plan on exercising in the heat.

Cold

Working out in the cold is easier and you can train harder because your body temperature won’t rise too much. The evidence is still mixed on the effects of ice baths and cryotherapy and some research as shown that you’ll burn more calories if you spend time in colder temperatures. Just beware that exercising in the cold can lead to muscle tightness, so be sure to warm up and cool down properly.

Which is Better?

Unfortanelty, there’s no simple answer and a lot of it comes down to personal preferences. If you hate getting sweaty or overheating, a cold workout is probably better for you, but if you can’t deal with the cold, than a hot workout may be ideal. The right temperature also depends on the exercise you’re doing.

The transition between summer and fall can be tough, and it’s not unusual to start feeling a little bit under the weather as you’re trying to adjust. If you don’t feel like missing your workout because of a cold, these are the best exercises you can do without putting your body under too much stress.

Jogging

It’s safe to go for a light run when you have a cold, as long as your symptoms are above the neck and you’re not pushing your body to the limits. Fresh air could do you good, but running on a treadmill is always an option if you don’t feel like heading outside.

Stationary Bike

You’re allowed to set your own pace on a stationary bike, and take a break whenever it feels like you’re pushing it too far. It’s also easy to free your hands without losing control whenever you feel like your nose is running or you’re about to sneeze.

Home Workouts

It’s totally understandable if you don’t feel like going to the gym and being surrounded by people when you’re under the weather. If you still want to stay active, doing a couple of light exercises at home is always an option and you can easily stop once it feels like too much.

Leaving the gym covered in sweat is one of the most annoying parts of working out, but one emerging fitness trend is trying to change that. Cold workouts are all the rage in New York right now, but what is this craze all about?

As their name suggests, these workouts entail working out in freezing cold, between 7 °C and 15 °C. This new fitness trend emerged in New York, after Brrrn became the first gym in the country to offer what they call “cool temperature fitness experience”.

If you don’t enjoy being chilly this may sound like a crazy idea, but cold workouts actually come with a long list of benefits. They can improve endurance, aid recovery, lead to quicker calorie burn and help you fully focus on your training.

Other gyms are yet to embrace this trend, but even if that doesn’t happen, you can always give cold workouts a try on your own. Winter is obviously the best time to do it, but you can opt for exercising early in the morning or late at night when it’s colder than during the day.
