They say that you are either a dog person, or a cat person. If you fall into the former category, there is a high chance that you feel the need to pet every dog that crosses your path. It can make getting to your destination a fairly delayed process.

But, as it turns out, you may be doing a lot for your mental health by engaging with those random pups.

Studies have shown that stroking dogs can be beneficial to your well-being as it lowers the level cortisol which is responsible for stress and anxiety. Interacting with the furry friends can provide a sense of calm and distract you from anxious thoughts.

In fact, it’s not only humans who reap the rewards. Play between people and pooches releases oxytocin which facilitates bonding and connection. As dogs are pack animals, this gives them a sense of belonging and purpose.

For all you cat lovers who are feeling a little left out, don’t worry. Researchers at Washington State University have found that petting a dog or cat can relieve stress in just 10 minutes.

So, next time you’re running 5 minutes late because you stopped to greet a pup on the street, remind yourself that it’s all in the name of mental health.

If you have a dog, especially a younger one, then you know they tend to be absolutely full of energy. And if you’re looking for fun ways to stay in shape and get some movement and cardio in your day-to-day, then playing with your dog is a great way to do that. Plus, it will make your furry friend extra happy! Here are three pup-approved games that are also great for your body!

Water Games

Splashing around in the water is tons of fun for dogs who know how to swim, especially on a hot day. If you live near a beach, take them out to the water and run on in with them! Make sure not to go too deep so you can keep ahold of your dog. If you have a backyard, you can also use a kiddie pool or a sprinkler and run, chase, or just jump and splash around with them!

Tug

Lots of dogs think tugging on a rope is just the best time and for you pulling the rope away and trying to hold it while your dog bites down with all its weight will work out your upper body, especially for bigger dog owners. It’s also a good way to train them not to bite, as if their teeth come in contact with you you can simply stop the game consistently so they understand exactly what triggers “no more fun”.

Dogstacle Course

An obstacle course for your dog! You can set it up with household objects, and then you can run through it with your dog or take turns with them. This will be great fun for the dog and will work off lots of energy—plus it’ll be a fun workout for you as well!

Running with a dog is so much fun at times, but it can turn out to be an exhausting experience. If you haven’t trained your furry best friend right, you can experience difficulties while doing the daily run. With just a little patience and these simple tricks, you will be back on track in no time.

Walk

Before you run you first need to walk. This is one of the best ways to prepare your dog for what’s coming. In other words, make sure that it walks on your side and that’s exactly what you should practice when running. If you start with walking your pet will get to know everything that’s going on around you and will be prepared for the future.

Don’t Overdo It

Dogs get tired and sore as well. Don’t overdo it and if you know that your pet has done more work than usual, you should also bring more treats or give them an extra meal.

Dog-Friendly Places

Not all routes are good for dogs. Their paws are sensitive, so choose grass or sand for example. When it’s hot, don’t make your pet run on the warm ground because it can be very dangerous for their paws.

We know what you were thinking. How can I get my dog involved in my daily workout? Here are some ideas!

Take Your Dog On A Hike

Spending time in the great outdoors is a great way to relax and reflect by yourself, but it’s even better when you have a companion. Take your dog-friend out with you to get moving and give both of you some exercise.

Run Stairs

Go to a park, school, or other location with a large set of stairs, generally avoiding bleachers because of their confined space. Run up and down the stairs and have your dog do the same while heeling by your side. Take 30-60 second breaks in between each and have water ready as this exercise will get your heart rate up quickly.

Train Your Dog and Your Body

Pick two spots about 15 to 25 feet apart and mark them using a cone. Start by walking with your dog to spot 1, then to spot 2, announcing “spot” and having your dog sit at each mark. Do this for about 10 rounds and gradually increase your speed each time until you reach a sprint. This exercise will serve as a good warm up for you and as an excellent training exercise for your canine.

Turn Fetch Into A Race

Take a classic like playing fetch with your dog and turn it into a workout for the both of you. Find a grassy or dirt area that is relatively flat and a ball or other toy your dog plays fetch with. Just like normal, throw the ball for your dog to chase after, but follow by sprinting and seeing who gets there first.

Dogs aren’t just man’s best friend; they can be also their personal trainers. If you would like to include your furry friends in your workouts, these are the safest exercises you can do with them.

Warm Up

Put your dog on a leash and do a simple power walk back and forth. After that, you can move onto a light jog or sprint for about 2 minutes.

Use Your Dog As Weights

If your pup isn’t humongous, you can easily use it instead of dumbbells. He will receive his daily fun, while you do your daily exercise. They can also sit on your back while you’re doing a plank, making those 30 seconds even more torturous.

Ride a Bike

Another great way to workout. Just hop onto your bike and bring your doggo with you. Let your furry friend run next to your bike. If you notice that your pet is getting tired slow down the tempo or make a quick rest.

Use Your Dog’s Toy

Place your doggy’s favorite toy in your hands, lay down onto your back, move it back and forth between your hands and feet and let the fun begin!
