Are you new to working out? Perhaps you’ve just signed up for a gym for the first team? If this is you, then fear not. Here are some tips to help you acclimatize to your new active lifestyle and enjoy the gym in no time.

Remain Realistic

While you may be excited to being your new healthy lifestyle, don’t get disappointed if you don’t progress quickly at first. After all, fitness is a lifelong journey. Make sure to set realistic goals for yourself and whatever, you do, start slow—you don’t want to overexert yourself or get injured.

Be Proud

No matter whether you’re lifting 100 pounds or only one, remember that you should be proud of yourself simply for having the courage to show up. After all, working out is difficult and so long as you continue to believe in yourself, you’ll be able to progress and eventually achieve your ultimate wellness goals.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

If you’re unsure of how to do an exercise or feel like you’re doing it wrong, don’t be scared to ask for help. You could consider getting assistance from a personal trainer or perhaps start working out with a friend. The moment you ask for help could even be the start of a new friendship with others who also go to your gym.

If you live in New York City and are wondering its worth jumping on the Equinox bandwagon and splurging on one of their $200-300 gym memberships, then you’ve come to the right place. We’re here to help you decide whether it’s a yes or no based on your lifestyle.

Gym Classes

If you love gym classes, and plan on going to the many world class trainer led classes taught at Equinox, then the membership may just be right for you. Compared to other gyms such as Crunch, NYSC, and Blink, the quality, space, equipment, amount of classes led per day, makes equinox worth the price. If you were to crunch the numbers and pick one gym, such as Soul Cycle or Rumble, and pay $40 a class, the membership may just end up paying for itself. However if you plan on just going for the bare bones gym equipment, you can probably find equally decent gyms for a fraction of the price.

Amenities

Equinox is famous for its world class spa amenities including refrigerated Eucalyptus towels, hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms, that make the gym feel like a spa every day. The showers also have excellent skin care products, and soap, that make showering there, quite possibly more luxuriating than your apartment’s shower. For this reason, if you were to use the spa amenities three times a week, the price is equal to a spa day at a fancy spa. To us, that sounds like a bargain.

Location

Equinox is also an attractive option to city dwellers, because of all their convenient locations, that make going to the gym after work or early in the morning. If you have the membership that grants you access to multiple locations, some locations have a rock wall, basketball court, and a pool, making it sports lovers paradise.

For many people, going to the gym is an effective way of regulating their mental health, keeping fit, and building muscle. However, others can be put off by its cost, or atmosphere, so here are alternative exercises that can build muscle without having to go to the gym.

Calisthenics

Calisthenics is a form of exercise that basically means using your own body weight as resistance, for example doing a push-up which exercises your upper body by having to lift it repeatedly. Calisthenics are great because you can increase or decrease resistance by adjusting your level of resistance, either by increasing your weight with a weighted backpack or by making the exercise easier by adjusting the form. Calisthenics can also build lots of different muscles- for example through a combination of calf raises, pull-ups, sit-ups, and squats, you can start to build well-rounded muscles. To add to all this, they are free and can be done almost anywhere!

Climbing

Most beginners to climbing start by bouldering indoors at a climbing center. Whilst this is less money-saving than calisthenics, it can be more social as most climbers are very friendly, and it is also very fun. Climbing builds a broad range of muscles that are often underused including muscles in the fingers and feet. The muscles built through climbing are often complemented by calisthenic exercises and climbers tend to have a very balanced physique. On top of this, bouldering can be a bit like solving a puzzle, so it also engages the brain.

If you’re looking to change your life from a fitness standpoint, you may be looking to get a personal trainer. This is a path that so many people have gone down, and it definitely may be the right option for you. The question is, is it? Here’s what you should consider before making this choice.

Your Self-Accountability

Are you the kind of person that’s really good at holding yourself accountable for things? If so, you actually might not need a personal trainer. That’s not to say that a trainer wouldn’t be able to teach you things, but you might be able to learn that necessary information on your own. A big part of a trainer’s job is holding you accountable, so if you’ve already covered that base, you’ve done half the work.

Your Experience Level

Of course, there are some people who are so clueless when it comes to fitness that getting a personal trainer is really the only way to set them on the right path. Some people are good at picking things up from YouTube videos or other things like that, but some people really need that personal touch. If that’s you, then you could definitely benefit from getting a trainer.

It’s quite amazing how unaware people can be in certain social settings. That may sound harsh to say, but it’s an important facet of life—including when it comes to gym culture. It’s crucial to be respectful of others at the gym, but some people aren’t so good at knowing how to do that. Here’s something that many people do that you should avoid if you can.

Invading Personal Space

One of the most common ways that people get bothered at the gym is when random people start talking to them out of nowhere. The reason this happens so often is because everybody is different. Some people are very talkative while others are more to themselves. Therefore, one talkative person might think they’re doing nothing wrong by chatting up a person who really just wants to work out and keep to themselves.

Being Self-Aware

The solution to this is being self-aware of your natural instincts. So if you think you’re someone who’s extroverted and very talkative, try to rein yourself in as much as you can to make sure you’re not bothering people. If you’re talking to someone while they’re in the middle of a workout, look for signs that they might be getting uncomfortable.

When it comes to working out, having a structured gym routine is key to achieving your fitness goals. But with so many exercises and equipment available at the gym, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. Here are some tips and tricks for creating an effective gym routine that will help you maximize your time and effort.

Define Your Fitness Goals

Before you start, it’s important to know what you want to achieve. Do you want to lose weight, build muscle, improve your cardio fitness, or all of the above? Defining your goals will help you create a workout plan that is specific to your needs.

Create a Balanced Workout

A balanced workout should include strength training, cardio, and flexibility exercises. Strength training can help you build muscle and increase your metabolism, while cardio exercises can improve your heart health and burn calories. Flexibility exercises like stretching and yoga can help you improve your range of motion and reduce the risk of injury.

Plan Your Workout Schedule

Determine how many days a week you can realistically commit to working out, and plan your workout schedule accordingly. Be sure to give yourself at least one rest day a week to allow your body to recover.

Start With a Warm-Up

Before you start your workout, it’s important to warm up your muscles to reduce the risk of injury. A good warm-up can include a few minutes of light cardio, such as jogging on a treadmill or cycling on a stationary bike.

Focus on Proper Form

Proper form is crucial to getting the most out of your workout and avoiding injury. Be sure to ask a trainer or instructor for guidance if you are unsure about how to perform a particular exercise.

Use a Variety of Equipment

Don’t be afraid to mix up your gym routine by using different equipment. This can help keep your workout interesting and prevent boredom.

Track Your Progress

Keep track of your workouts and progress towards your fitness goals. This can help you stay motivated and make adjustments to your workout routine as needed.

Are you debating whether or not to join a gym? We don’t blame you. It may seem like an easy decision to make at the forefront, but there are a handful of factors to consider. First of all, if you’re someone who doesn’t like to waste money, chances are you’re wondering whether or not you’re even going to go at all—which would be a wasteful investment. Second of all, maybe you’d get more working out done at home? The good news is that you can actually join a gym on a month-by-month basis.

An Ideal Setup

Indeed, most gyms offer services in which you don’t have to undertake a major long term commitment when signing up. You can simply get a one-month membership, and see where it goes from there. This offers the convenient benefit of seeing how much you like it, and also whether or not it pays off from a practical standpoint.

Sometimes life gets in the way, no matter how much we want to work out. On the other hand, sometimes you can just fall in love with the gym and be there all the time. So the month by month setup allows you to see which of those two camps you fall into, making it a perfect situation for you if you’re just starting out.

Embarking on a fitness journey is an exciting endeavor, but sometimes, the road to achieving your goals can feel like a slow crawl. That’s where a gym membership comes into play. A gym membership can be the secret ingredient to accelerating your fitness goals and reaching new heights of success.

Access to State-of-the-Art Equipment

One of the biggest advantages of a gym membership is gaining access to a wide range of state-of-the-art exercise equipment. From cardio machines to strength training equipment, gyms are equipped with tools designed to help you work out effectively, target specific muscle groups, and challenge yourself in new ways.

Professional Guidance from Expert Trainers

Gyms employ certified fitness trainers who possess a wealth of knowledge about exercise techniques, form, and programming. These experts can tailor workouts to your individual goals, ensuring you’re using the right equipment and performing exercises correctly to maximize results and prevent injuries.

Structured Routine and Accountability

Consistency is essential in any fitness journey, and a gym membership helps provide the structure you need. By committing to scheduled workout times, you’re more likely to stick to your routine and achieve your fitness milestones. Additionally, the accountability that comes from attending classes or working with a personal trainer can keep you on track and moving forward.

Diverse Range of Workouts

Variety is key to preventing workout plateaus and keeping your motivation high. With a gym membership, you have access to a multitude of workout options. From group classes like spinning, HIIT, and yoga to individualized workouts, you’ll never run out of ways to challenge yourself and keep things exciting.

Congratulations, you’ve decided to join a gym. Just making that commitment alone is actually a lot to be proud of, and now all you have to do is decide which one you should sign up for. So which gym is right for you? It’s not always easy to know for sure, but here’s a pretty basic guide of things to consider when making this bold choice.

Amenities and Services

The first and most important thing you’ll want to know is what kind of amenities and services a gym provides. Do they have a swimming pool? Do they have a basketball court? A shower? There’s no point in going to a gym if they don’t have the things that you specifically like doing.

Location

Location is also a pretty darn important thing to consider. If a gym is five minutes away from your home, you’re a lot more likely to go consistently than if it’s 20 minutes away.

Price

And last but not least, we have the price. Here’s where it gets a little tricky. Ultimately, you want to get your money’s worth—but this doesn’t always mean paying for the cheaper option. You’ll get the most bang for your buck the more you actually use the gym—and the previous two points we made can contribute to that. If that means paying a little bit more, it might actually be a better deal if the alternative is not going at all.
