Building a home gym is all fun and games when you have a lot of space on your disposal, but things can get tricky if you live in a small apartment. Luckily, there are some pieces of gym equipment you can easily fit even inside the smallest apartment, starting with these five fitness essentials.

Yoga Mat

No matter how big or small your apartment is, having a yoga mat is a must. You’ll need it for all sorts of floor exercises, and you can easily fold it and put it away after you’re done.

Dumbbells

If your workout routine includes some strength training, having a good set of dumbbells is essential. Adjustable dumbbells are the best possible option, so you won’t have to buy brand-new sets as your routine evolves.

Resistance Bands

Resistance bands take up barely any space, but that’s not stopping them from being incredibly effective. You can use them in all sorts of different exercises, from strength training to stretching.

Mini Exercise Bike

If you enjoy working out on a stationary bike, but can’t fit it into your apartment, buying a mini version is always an option. You should also consider mini versions of other workout machines, such as a walking pad instead of a treadmill and an ellipse leg exerciser instead of an elliptical machine.

Ab Wheel

Ab wheel can take your ab workouts to a whole new level, and you can use it with ease in a small apartment.

If you’re thinking of slowly building a home gym, the treadmill is probably one of the first machines you’ll consider buying, but is it really a good investment? We’re bringing you a list of the pros and cons of having a home treadmill that will help you make the right decision.

Pro: Enjoyment Level

Some people hate treadmill workouts from the bottom of their hearts, while others swear by this gym machine. Before buying your own, try working out on a treadmill in the long run because this will help you determine which group you belong to.

Con: Taking Up Space

One of the biggest issues with treadmills is that they take up a lot of space. Buying one is only an option if you have enough space in your home since they’re one of the most space-consuming cardio machines on the market.

Pro: Good Warmup

Despite coming with a wide variety of adjustable speeds and inclines, treadmills don’t offer much versatility beyond that, but they have their perks. They’re great for multitasking, and you can always use yours as a part of your warmup routine.

Con: Better Alternatives

The main argument against buying a home treadmill is a wide variety of better alternatives that can help you reach the same fitness goals. Ellipticals and stationary bikes are a case in point, and using them is usually less mundane.

Buying equipment for your home gym doesn’t come cheap, but all that money won’t necessarily buy you the workout motivation. If you’re struggling to get motivated to use your home equipment, here are three tips that can give you a push in the right direction.

Cheap vs. Expensive Equipment

Giving up on a jumping rope isn’t the same as giving up on a treadmill or an exercise bike because they don’t come with the same price tag. Before buying any expensive pieces of equipment, try them at the gym and make sure you enjoy them enough to make a long-term investment.

Personalized Workout Space

It’s tough to stay motivated for your home workouts when your equipment is scattered all around the house. That’s why it’s a good idea to have a dedicated workout space that you’re going to associate with your fitness routine and where you can keep all your equipment in one place.

Multitasking

The good thing about certain pieces of equipment, such as the treadmill, stationary bike, and elliptical, is that you can easily multitask while using them. Watching a movie or listening to podcasts and audiobooks can help you stay motivated because you’ll associate workouts with activities that you truly enjoy.

If you have a packed schedule, then finding time to travel to the gym may prove problematic. Fortunately, with the right planning, you can get the workout you need at home. Here is some effective home gym equipment that is compact enough for any space.

3-in-1 Adjustable Dumbells

Unlike regular dumbells in the gym, the adjustable dumbells allow you to add and subtract weights according to what you need. As a result, you’ll be able to have just two dumbbell bars instead of a separate set of complete dumbells for each amount of weight that you need. What’s more, there are several adjustable dumbbell sets that come with extenders, turning your dumbells into a barbell, as well as a handle for you to create a kettlebell.

Resistance Bands

Thin, light, and foldable, resistance bands are the easiest gym equipment to store away when not in use. In addition to their compactness, resistance bands are also versatile tools that can be used to perform both upper-body and lower-body exercises.

Weighted Bracelets

Compact and stylish, weighted bracelets will make any home workout more challenging. While the weight they can contain is minimal, these bangles will help to condition and tone your muscles more than pure bodyweight exercises, especially after performing many reps.

Building a home gym takes a lot of time, energy, and money—but that doesn’t mean you have to break the bank to get it done. It’s possible to build a home gym without buying expensive gym equipment pieces, and here are three things to keep in mind before spending a fortune on them.

First Try

You should never buy equipment pieces that you haven’t tried before because there’s no guarantee they’ll suit your needs. Try using a treadmill, elliptical, exercise bike, and other workout machines at your local gym and see if you enjoy them before buying your own.

Long Run

Even if you like using certain expensive pieces at first, there’s no guarantee that you’re going to enjoy them in the long run. Take your long-term fitness plans into consideration and try to figure out if expensive fitness machines fit into the equation so you wouldn’t have to sell them at a lower price.

Cheaper Alternatives

Big and bulky gym machines can also be skipped if you can achieve the same results without them. Workouts done with minimal equipment, or no equipment at all, are becoming increasingly popular these days, and they’re an especially great fit if your space is limited.

There are pros and cons to going to the gym. Gyms can provide access to workouts we may not otherwise have. The community we may find through going to the gym may also bring motivation that can help us reach our goals as well as hold ourselves accountable. On the other hand, gym memberships can be quite expensive, and many of us have jobs that prevent us from being able to go as much as we’d like. An unused membership is a waste of money and continuously telling ourselves that “we’ll go tomorrow” can lead to feelings of guilt that make us unmotivated. It’s a personal preference, but if this sounds like you, consider putting together a home gym. Here’s what we suggest:

Dedicate a Space

This can be anywhere you have room: a garage, a sunporch, or even a corner of the hallway. The important part is that this will be a place you can access easily without having to set up every time you want to work out. Having everything ready to go makes jumping into a workout seem much less daunting.

Bring Variety

The main reason most of us go to the gym is that we’ll have access to different kinds of equipment. You don’t have to invest in a treadmill or anything expensive. Set up a yoga mat, get some weights or kettle balls, install some hooks, and hang a few jump ropes and you’ve covered all of your fitness bases.

How often do you clean your home workout equipment? Chances are you’re not cleaning it often enough. Gym equipment like weight balls, weight plates, dumbbells, ellipticals, resistance bands, and treadmills gather dirt and bacteria need to be cleaned at least once a week and even more often if the person using it is sick. Here’s how to clean them.

Yoga Mats

To clean yoga mats, spray cleaner directly onto the mat and let it sit for the recommended time on the package before wiping it with a microfiber cloth. For a deeper clean, place your yoga mat in the bathtub and give it a good scrub.

Weights

Spritz weights with cleaning spray and wait the recommended time on the packaging before wiping them down. Make sure they’re dry before using them.

Cardio Machines

Before cleaning cardio machines like bikes, treadmills, or ellipticals, unplug them. Then clean the high-touch spots like the seats, handles, and screens. Don’t forget the other areas like the pedals or the tread of the treadmill, which is where your shoes touch. For machines with high-tech screens, use a glass cleaner and microfiber cloth.

Resistance Bands

The easiest way to clean these is to put them in a bucket of warm, soapy water or in the bathtub. Then, let the bands air dry.

Foam Rollers

To clean foam rollers, spray them with cleaning spray like you would a yoga mat, and then wipe them down to dry.

Most people can’t imagine building a home gym without expensive equipment pieces, but this step can be skipped entirely. Unless you’re a fitness pro, fancy equipment that you’re barely familiar with doesn’t belong anywhere near your gym for more reasons than one.

Money Talk

The first reason why you shouldn’t buy any fancy equipment for your home gym is pretty obvious: the money. Unless you’re already familiar with the machine in question and enjoy using it on a regular basis, you shouldn’t spend a fortune to simply give it a try.

Lack of Space

Some people have a whole room dedicated to their home gym, but this isn’t extremely common. If you’re working out from your living room, like most people are, your space is extremely limited. Many popular gym machines, such as treadmills and exercise bikes, take up a significant amount of room and you’ll probably struggle to make space for them.

Better Alternatives

There’s no need to spend a fortune on your home gym because there are many affordable options on the market. From jump ropes and resistance bands to equipment-free workouts, it all comes down to finding the routine that you enjoy, with or without expensive gym machines.
