If you are not in a position to own a gym membership or take exercise classes, you probably work out at home. However, it can be tricky to find the motivation to stick to your training program when you know there’s laundry to be done or dinner to cook, or even just another episode of your favorite Netflix show waiting for you. Follow these top tips to say goodbye to distractions and work out successfully at home.

Schedule a Time

Calendar your at-home workouts into your day, as though it’s a class you’ve signed up for. This creates accountability. If you have a phone reminder that you need to work out between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., you’re much more likely to do it, rather than having a vague sense that you’ll work out “at some point today”.

Find Workout Videos You Enjoy

Use Instagram routines, apps, and of course, YouTube videos to help guide you through your workout. Find content creators that speak to you and ‘shop around’ for routines that work for you.

Dress for the Gym

10 minutes before you’re due to begin, dress in your gym clothes so you feel prepared for your session. Clear a space for your mat and pop your favorite work out playlist on. In other words, create a mini gym in your home and don’t exercise in your jammies.

No Equipment, No Problem

You don’t need a Pilates machine and a set of free weights before you can start working out at home. You can use filled water bottles as weights, towels as yoga props, and other household items to aid in your workout. Or, simply choose exercise routines that don’t require any equipment at all.

If you’re someone who likes working out from home, we admire your sheer tenacity and self-discipline. Home workouts are simply not for everyone. As convenient as they are, it takes a certain kind of mindset to shield yourself from all the distractions that exist at home. But if you’re struggling to focus with your home workouts, perhaps you just haven’t found the right exercise to do. This exercise may re-energize you in the way that counts.

Jumping Rope

Jumping rope may be one of the most underrated exercises you can do. It was one of those exercises your old gym teacher used to run with the class back when you were young. But as you got older, and coveted that six-pack, or those huge biceps, jumping rope sort of made way for things such as dumbbells.

However, jumping rope is an incredibly effective form of cardio. Not only that, but it strengthens your legs and core simultaneously in a way that’s hard to match with most workouts. When you take all those things into consideration and lump them all together, you have an easy-to-do workout that’s unparalleled.

Jump ropes are easily accessed, cheap, and mobile-friendly. It may not seem like it at the outset, or perhaps jumping rope looks “too childish”—but try doing it for five minutes straight and then see if you still think it’s so childish. It requires a lot of effort, but in the long can do wonders for your bodily health.

Okay, so you’ve finally got yourself into a nice workout flow. You’ve exercised every day for two weeks straight, you’re feeling good, and you feel like nothing can stop you. We don’t mean to rain on your parade, especially since you’re doing so well. But we do feel it’s important to ask yourself a question: how hard are you pushing yourself, and do you think it’s sustainable?

Less is More

It could be that your two-week streak is actually very sustainable. Such is the case if you don’t feel like you’re straining yourself, and you feel quite content with the workload. That doesn’t mean you aren’t challenging yourself—it just means that you haven’t taken on too much too fast. If that’s how you feel, then you’re in the right place, because you’ll be able to keep it up in the long run.

When It’s Too Much

So how do you know when you’ve been pushing yourself too hard? You need to compare it to what you were doing before. If you were running two miles a day before, and now all of the sudden you’ve upped it to ten miles a day, you’ve taken it a bit too far. That kind of leap isn’t sustainable, and there’s a chance you’ll be heading for a mental crash soon. It’s much better to run four miles a day for three straight months than to run 10 miles for two weeks and then to stop running altogether.

Most people fail to implement weight training into their home workouts, but this routine can take your training sessions to a whole new level. Follow these three steps, and thank us later when your routine changes for the better!

Trial Run

Weight training at home requires an investment, so don’t get into it if you’re not 100% sure it’s your thing. Hire a personal trainer at the local gym to show you the ropes and prepare you to do weight training on your own. In addition to helping you figure out if you enjoy this workout routine or not, a personal trainer will help you correct your form, thus avoiding potential injuries.

Weights Choice

Weight training at home requires more money than some other fitness programs because you’ll have to invest in your weights and switch them up as you go along. Buy weights that fit your current fitness level, but keep in mind you’ll need to replace them because you’ll need heavier weights to challenge yourself.

Find the Right Program

Working without a strategy in place will make it pretty difficult to track your results. To avoid this mistake, you should look for a workout program that works for you and can help you achieve your goals. YouTube is a good source of workout videos, but you can also rely on fitness apps.

Working out at home has become a new normal, and many people find that it’s more convenient, affordable, and even fun. That being said, it can come with a few caveats to watch out for. Check out a few common mistakes you should avoid in order to improve your home workouts.

Buying Too Much Equipment

Investing in dumbbells, resistance bands, sliders, and other gym equipment can be great if you need motivation for working out at home. However, don’t go overboard because buying too much equipment can sometimes be a waste of time and money.

Doing the Same Routine

Doing the same set of exercises every time is probably one of the most common mistakes beginners tend to make. Changing up your workouts will improve your results, activate different muscle groups, and in the end make your routine more enjoyable and fun.

Not Pushing Yourself Hard Enough

If you find that your workouts are too easy, then it’s time to push yourself harder, increase the number of repetitions, or lift more weights in order to maximize your results.

Not Taking a Day Off

People who work out at home can easily be tempted to exercise every single day, thinking they will get better results. This is a bad idea that can lead to injuries, so make sure to take at least two rest days in a week.

Home workouts are an amazing fit for people with a busy schedule who don’t enjoy traditional gyms, but they come with a couple of downsides. Staying safe while working out at home can be tricky, but avoiding these common mistakes is a good place to start.

Messy Space

Working out in a messy space isn’t only bad for your motivation, but for your safety, as well. Make sure to de-clutter your designated workout space so you wouldn’t be bumping or tripping over things in the middle of your routine.

No Warm-Up and Cool-Down

Many people working out at home do it because that’s the only way to fit exercises into their busy schedule. If you’re short on time, you may be tempted to skip warm-up and cool-down, but this is one mistake you should never make. They should be an essential part of your routine because they allow you to prepare your body for what comes next.

No Guidance

Working out with the incorrect form can also be a safety hazard. You can avoid this mistake by booking a couple of classes with a personal trainer, working out to videos that guide you through each exercise, and checking your form by training in front of a mirror.

It’s difficult to correct your form when you’re working out on your own, with no trainer or friend by your side to point out your mistakes. Incorrect posture can be a huge problem and lead to pain and injury, but there are ways to fix it even if you’re working out at home.

Short-Term Trainer

If you can’t afford a trainer long-term, you should at least consider doing a class or two and use them to correct your form. If you don’t want to do it in person due to safety concerns, individual virtual classes are also an option since many trainers offer them these days.

Baby Steps

You shouldn’t rush your home workout routine. It requires a lot of effort and patience and kicking things off with basic moves is your best bet. Only after mastering the basics, you should consider adding modifications to the moves you’re doing, but there’s no need to rush anything.

Mirror or Video

It’s impossible to check if you’re making mistakes if you can’t watch yourself while doing the exercises. Standing in front of a mirror is the best possible solution, but you can also film yourself and go over the footage to check what you’ve been doing wrong.

The most difficult part of working out at home is finding the routine that works for you. Not every exercise works for everyone, and it’s important to know what you need first. It takes a lot of trial and error to finally settle into a fitness program that you enjoy, so here’s what it takes to reach that goal.

Do What You Know

Is there a routine that you enjoyed doing at a traditional gym before switching to home workouts? If the answer is yes, that’s probably the routine you should stick to, because you already know it brings you joy and you won’t need a lot of guidance along the way.

Personal Goals

Your personal fitness goal will determine your routine choice. If you’re simply trying to stay active and maintain a healthy weight, cardio workouts are a way to go. In case you’re more focused on toning muscles and building strength, consider investing in a couple of basic pieces of equipment and focus on strength training.

Go with the Flow

There’s nothing bad about switching in between different fitness programs. As a matter of fact, it’s recommended. It’s important to strike balance, even with your home workouts, especially since there will be days when you simply won’t enjoy doing the same old things.

If home workouts have become a part of your daily routine but aren’t leading to any significant progress, chances are you’re doing something wrong. It takes time to notice changes in your body, but if that’s not happening even after months of working out, here’s what needs to change.

Too Easy

We tend to train harder when someone is watching, but you’ll be left to your own devices during home workouts. If you notice you’re going too easy on yourself, try to imagine you’re at the gym or at a group class, and you’ll find the motivation to give it your all.

Incorrect Form

It’s difficult to correct your form when you don’t have anyone to guide you, but it’s not impossible. Try working out in front of a mirror or book a session or two with a personal trainer if you think there’s something you’re doing incorrectly.

Overcompensating

Working out should be something that brings you joy, not just a means to an end. If you’re working out to make up for overeating or sitting on the couch all day long, it’s time to embrace a different mindset and make healthy changes in other areas of your life as well.
