It makes sense that if you’re hungry, you should eat something. Yet, the simplest solution isn’t always the best. Some foods can do the opposite of their job and actually make you hungrier. These are the ingredients to look out for and avoid.

Refined Flour

Sorry to say, but refined flour is not your friend. In order to have a longer storage life, the bran and germ are removed from the flour, leaving it without fiber and other nutrients. Eating a bagel or piece of white toast can give your sugar levels a boost, but then crash shortly after. Rather stick to whole wheat and low GI.

Refined Sugar

Eating sugar is a slippery path to go down… If you find that you can’t stop after one sweet treat or slice of cake, it’s because consuming sugar makes you crave more. Yes, it can make you feel full of energy but know that it will be short-lived. Refined sugar in high-fructose corn syrup can actually slow down the release of leptin which makes us feel full.

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)

MSG makes food taste delicious but it’s not the best thing to turn to when you’re hungry. While the additive boosts the flavor in many foods, it also irritates your pancreas, making it release more insulin and resulting in hunger.

Most people tend to reach for unhealthy junk food when dealing with constant hunger, but this is not the best solution. If you’re looking for a way to feel full without eating unhealthy, these protein-rich and fiber-rich foods can help you curb frequent cravings for food.

High-Protein Snacks

High-protein foods are pretty great at combatting hunger, without being unhealthy. If you’re prone to craving junk food, try to avoid it by eating jerky, trail mix, or low-fat Greek yogurt instead.

High-Fiber Fruits

Fruits are one of the healthiest snacks on the market and many of them have very high fiber content. Raspberries and blackberries, in particular, are very fiber-rich and you can add them to your low-fat Greek yogurt.

Healthy Carbs

Instead of completely cutting carbs out of your diet, try to limit their intake and opt for healthy ones. Whenever you’re feeling hungry, whole grains, beans, and other complex carbs will keep you full until your next meal.

Water

Hunger is easily confused with thirst, and there are times when you just need some water, not another snack. Staying hydrated throughout the day will help you tell the difference between hunger and thirst.

After an intense workout, for many, the last thing on their mind is eating. Having a decreased appetite after exercising is common and most workouts can lead to suppressed hunger after physical activity. So, why does it happen and should you eat post-workout?

The Science Behind It

High body temperatures and hormones are responsible for appetite suppression after working out. Physical activity increases body temperature and to avoid overheating, the body uses its energy on cooling, which occupies the receptors that signal hunger. Some high-impact sports cause a lot of stomach movement which can make you feel nauseous and have a decreased desire to eat. Also, during exercise, blood volume and flow gets diverted from the gut to bring more oxygen to the muscles, which slows digestion, making you feel full.

Why You Should Eat Post-Workout

Even if you’re not hungry, it’s important to eat after an intense workout as your muscles need proper nutrition as insufficient energy intake after training can impair muscle protein synthesis, leading to fatigue and less ability for training in the future. So the bottom line is to eat even if you’re not hungry!

Do you constantly feel hungry no matter what you eat? Hunger isn’t a bad thing, but it’s certainly inconvenient. Many people deal with hunger by eating small meals throughout the day, but if you find you still feel hungry it could be due to these reasons.

You’re Not Eating Enough Protein or Fiber

Not all calories are created equally. While carbs are greats for giving us quick energy, protein, fat, and fiber are key to sustaining the energy. Foods high in protein and fiber will keep you feeling full longer.

You’re Distracted When Eating

Due to our busy lifestyles, many of us eat while we’re walking, driving, or on the phone. But, if you eat too quickly, your body doesn’t recognize that you’re full. Mindful eating can help you feel satisfied and it can reduce your cravings and emotional eating.

Your Hormones Aren’t Functioning Properly

When your body is in a constant state of stress, your cortisol levels rise which can cause you to feel hungry. Stress eating usually results in eating foods high in carbs and sugar, which won’t keep you feeling full. Also, when you’re menstruating, your hormones shift which can cause an increase in appetite and cravings. To deal with stress, try to exercise, journal, read, or meditate.

You’re Dehydrated

It’s easy to confuse hunger and thirst, so make sure you’re hydrated before you reach for snacks. If you’re feeling hungry soon after eating, try drinking a couple of cups of water.

Exercising can help you get in better shape and burn calories. But you may have noticed that since you’ve been more active, you’ve also been hungrier. Does exercise increase your appetite? Here’s what you should know about the connection between hunger and exercise.

Exercise & Hunger

During a workout, you probably won’t feel hungry because you’re too busy focusing on your workout. While you’re working out, your appetite stays suppressed and it continues for a bit when your workout is over. How long your hunger is suppressed relates to the intensity and duration of your exercise with more intense workouts resulting in holding of your hunger longer.

What are Your Goals?

Regardless of if you’re working out for weight loss or performance, it’s essential to eat after a workout to help your body refuel. If you’re building muscles, you need nutrients after a workout session to make progress. It’s essential to take in protein for muscle recovery and repair and carbohydrates to replenish glycogen.

Post-Workout Nutrition

For intense workouts, it’s important to eat a snack or meal not long after completion, regardless of if you feel hungry. You’ll notice that for a little while after your exercise you won’t feel hungry, but a few hours later you’ll be starving. When this happens, it’s important to make healthy food choices, so your progress doesn’t go to waste.
