The last few years have marked a notable improvement in terms of diversity in media and advertising. In conjunction, a movement founded on the notion that we should all accept and embrace our bodies, regardless of shape, size, or appearance, has begun to take hold. If you’re looking to improve your relationship with your body, read on for some tips on how to embrace the body positivity movement.

Be Kind to Yourself

The journey toward body positivity starts with self-compassion. Instead of fixating on what you perceive as flaws or comparing yourself to others, try to treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you’d offer to a friend. Everyone has imperfections—inside and out—and they don’t define your worth. Focus on your strengths and the qualities that make you unique instead.

Surround Yourself With Positivity

Your environment plays a major role in shaping your body image, especially when it comes to the content you consume. Follow accounts and creators that share body-positive messages that make you feel empowered, and unfollow or mute accounts that trigger negative self-perceptions. In daily life, try to surround yourself with people who uplift you and appreciate your inner qualities over physical appearance.

Practice Self-Care

The mind and body are deeply connected, and engaging in activities that make you feel good physically will translate into improved self-image and wellbeing. Aim to do something to care for your body every day, whether it be practicing yoga, going for a walk, or taking a bath with your favorite essential oils.

Winter will be here in just a matter of weeks, and as much as we’re looking forward to celebrating the holidays, we can’t say we’re too excited about the three months of cold, dark weather that we’ll have to endure post-New Year. According to science, we’re not alone—research suggests that around 10 million Americans suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression that occurs at the same time each year, typically during winter. While there isn’t a cure for SAD, there are strategies that can help to manage and mitigate its effects.

Light Therapy

Exposure to sunlight is crucial for regulating the body’s circadian rhythm and can even increase production of serotonin in the brain. For those who experience seasonal depression, one of the most widely recommended treatments is light therapy, which involves sitting in front of a special box that emits full-spectrum light designed to mimic the sun. Just 30 minutes to an hour each day can help regulate your body’s internal clock and improve mood.

Regular Exercise

Exercise releases endorphins, or “feel good” hormones that relieve stress and enhance mood. If you’re able, aim to get in at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day, whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga, or just dancing around to your favorite music. Outdoor exercise during daylight hours is even better, as it comes with the added benefit of exposure to sunlight.

Stick to Routine

Our bodies thrive on routine, and disruptions to daily activities caused by poor weather can seriously exacerbate SAD symptoms. Stick to a regular sleep schedule that includes waking up at the same time each day, and do your best to follow a balanced diet filled with plenty of protein and healthy fats. It’s also important to make time for activities that bring you joy—anything that creates a sense of structure and control can reduce the effects of seasonal depression.

While it’s already widely known that exercise can boost your mood, fast and intense HIIT workouts have a particularly positive effect on your mental wellbeing. Here’s why.

It’s All In The Research

According to research at the University of South Australia, quick, intense workouts in short bursts are shown to reduce symptoms of stress. This actually suggests that intense workouts are actually more effective at doing so than more leisurely exercises such as jogging and yoga.

Turn Up The Music

While analyzing the exercise of a group of men, the study determined that an intense workout wasn’t the only way to improve one’s mood. Working out to mid-to fast-paced music can also greatly improve performance and uplift your mental well-being, while helping you ignore your exhaustion.

Don’t Forget The Coffee

According to research, caffeine is able to improve your readiness to work out and ultimately get you in the mindset to hit the gym. Grab a cup of coffee or a shake or supplement to get in the right space of mind.

Have you ever noticed that your mental state tends to mirror the state of your living space? It turns out that the level of organization in your surroundings can have a big impact on how you feel. A tidy space can provide many benefits such as reduced stress levels, improved productivity, and even better quality sleep. Read on to learn a bit more about how the state of your space can affect mental health and some tips for staying organized.

Reduced Stress

A cluttered living space can be quite overwhelming to the point that it even causes feelings of anxiety. This can also make it difficult to relax and unwind at the end of the day, affecting your quality of sleep throughout the night. Keeping your space clean and tidy may help you to feel more in control. Additionally, it creates a peaceful atmosphere that’s conducive to a good night’s sleep.

Increased Focus

Clutter can be distracting and make it hard to concentrate on the task at hand. By keeping your space organized and clutter-free, you can minimize distractions and create a focused environment that makes it easy to get things done.

Tips for Keeping Your Space Organized

The easiest way to keep your space tidy is to make a habit of cleaning up as you go. Have a designated space for each of your belongings that makes it easy to put things away when you’re done using them.

You can also make a practice of doing a little bit each day. Don’t have time to clean the entire kitchen? Do the dishes today and the counters tomorrow.

Between work, family, school, finances, cooking, cleaning, appointments, and more, modern life includes no shortage of things that need our attention. Whenever we’re finally able to cross something off of our to-do lists, in come 10 other tasks to take its place. Often, this results in a feeling of being overwhelmed, like we’re in the middle of the ocean just trying to stay afloat. If you can relate, read on to learn about a few practices that help us to get back to living our lives from a calmer, more confident place.

Prioritize and Simplify

When you feel like everything’s coming at you at once, start by creating one list including all of the things that you need to accomplish. Categorize your responsibilities, identify which ones are most urgent, and break them into small, manageable steps that feel less daunting. As much as possible, try to simplify your schedule by saying no to non-essential commitments until you have less on your plate.

Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness encourages keeping all of your focus in the present moment, which can be especially helpful when your mind is racing with all of the things that you need to get done. The next time you feel overwhelmed, take a few deep breaths, then direct your attention to the crown of your head. Slowly scan down through your body, acknowledging any sensations that arise without judgment.

Seek Support

We all need help sometimes, and there’s nothing wrong with asking for it. If you struggle with feelings of being overwhelmed, consider talking to a friend, family member, or therapist you trust. Sharing your thoughts and emotions can provide relief and perspective while helping you to navigate challenges more effectively.

Anxiety has become a hot topic in the wellness corners of social media over the last few years, and we have to admit that we’re happy to see what was once a highly sensitive subject starting to become destigmatized. Feelings of anxiety are something that almost everyone will experience at some point in life, but there are certain practices that can make them easier to manage. Stimulating the vagus nerve, in particular, activates the parasympathetic nervous system and is one of the most effective ways to bring the mind and body back into balance. Read on to learn more about a few different vagus nerve stimulation techniques.

Deep Breathing

Taking slow, deep breaths causes your diaphragm to move rhythmically, massaging the vagus nerve and sending a message to your body that it’s safe to relax. Practice by inhaling deeply through your nose for a count of four, holding for a count of seven, and exhaling through your mouth for a count of eight. If these times feel like too much of a challenge, simply focus on extending the length of your exhales so that they’re longer than your inhales. Repeat this cycle 4-8 times.

Physical Activity

Exercise, especially activities like yoga or tai chi that incorporate deep breathing, encourages better vagal tone and can help move the nervous system from a sympathetic fight-or-flight state toward the parasympathetic rest-and-digest. You don’t have to work up a sweat to reap the benefits—even passive asanas such as Child’s Pose or Happy Baby are enough.

Cold Exposure

This one is a bit more controversial, and it should definitely be practiced with a healthy dose of caution, but research does show that exposing yourself to a few minutes of cold is an effective way to stimulate the vagus nerve. If you’re up for it, try ending your daily shower with a few seconds of cold water, or use a cold compress on your face as a gentler, more contained option.

Have you ever felt a random ache or pain and immediately started worrying if it was something more serious? Do you convince yourself that every sniffle is a sign that you’ve come down with some fatal illness? It’s normal to feel anxious every once in a while, but if you find yourself worrying more often than not, or your health concerns are getting in the way of your ability to function day to day, there’s a good chance you’re experiencing health anxiety. While frustrating, with the right knowledge and a few simple tools, it’s possible to manage health anxiety so that you can get back to feeling your best. Read on for some of our best tips.

Don’t Read into Things

They say knowledge is power, but it can also be a bit of a double-edged sword when it comes to health anxiety. Endlessly reading about symptoms online is a surefire way to send yourself spiraling, so limit your research to reliable sources and trusted healthcare professionals. Avoid the temptation to self-diagnose, instead focusing on learning about your condition as objectively as possible. Ask your doctor for clarification when needed.

Practice Mindfulness

Incorporating mindfulness techniques and relaxation exercises into your daily routine can both reduce anxiety and may even help to improve certain symptoms. Deep breathing, yoga nidra, and meditation are all excellent ways to cultivate mental clarity so that you can more easily differentiate between real health concerns and anxiety-driven fears. When anxious thoughts do surface, try to acknowledge them without judgment and gently redirect your focus to the present moment.

Seek Professional Help

Therapists and other mental health professionals can provide much-needed support by helping you learn to identify and challenge irrational thoughts, develop coping strategies, and desensitize you to your fears over time. Depending on the severity of your anxiety, psychological strategies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy may be enough, though medication may also be worth considering if you’re really struggling.

Anger is a natural emotion that everyone experiences from time to time; it’s a normal reaction to frustrating or upsetting situations, and feeling angry doesn’t make you a bad person. What is important is learning to handle anger in healthy ways so that we can maintain our relationships and sense of well-being. If consistent bouts of anger are having a significant effect on your daily life, you may want to consider seeking professional help, but for occasional flare-ups, there are several effective strategies you can utilize to come back into emotional balance. Let’s learn more about some methods to try next time you find yourself losing your cool.

Deep Breathing

Deep breathing exercises are designed to calm the nervous system and bring a sense of clarity. One of our favorite techniques is 4-7-8 breathing. Inhale deeply through your nose for a count of 4, hold for 7 seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 8. Mindfulness techniques, such as observing your thoughts and sensations without judgment, can also help you to stay present and prevent your anger from escalating further.

Physical Activity

Engaging in exercise, sports, or any form of physical activity stimulates the release of endorphins, the brain’s “feel-good” chemicals, and can help you release pent-up frustration. Whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga session, or vigorous workout, exercise can be used to calm down in the moment as well as manage anger and enhance mood in general.

Communicate

Effective communication is an essential part of maintaining healthy relationships, as it allows us to address what’s underneath our anger and find constructive solutions. Instead of bottling up your emotions until you lash out, practice respectful, yet assertive communication. Clearly express your feelings and concerns, focusing on the specific behavior or situation that triggered you. And remember—communication works both ways. Active listening during conversations can promote greater understanding and prevent further conflict.

Mindfulness is a powerful practice that has the potential to improve mental health and transform our daily lives. It involves cultivating a non-judgmental awareness of the present moment, allowing us to be fully present in any setting or situation. By embracing mindfulness, we may experience several significant benefits such as reduced stress, enhanced well-being, and a deeper sense of connection with ourselves and others. Read on to learn more about ways to practice mindfulness and how it can help you to create a more fulfilling and balanced life.

Techniques

One of the most effective methods when starting on your mindfulness journey is to focus on your breath. Take a moment to close your eyes, inhale deeply, and exhale slowly. Notice the sensations of each breath, the rise and fall of your chest, and the coolness of the air entering your nostrils.

Another technique is body scanning, where you bring your attention to each part of your body and observe any tension or sensations without judgment. You can also find opportunities to bring mindfulness into everyday activities such as eating, walking, or even washing dishes. The key is to approach each moment with openness and curiosity.

Benefits

Mindfulness helps reduce stress by calming the mind and shifting our focus from worry and anxiety back to the present moment. As a result, we’re able to more effectively regulate our emotions and respond to challenging situations with greater resilience. Studies have also shown that mindfulness practice can improve sleep quality and strengthen the immune system, benefitting overall physical health.

In today’s fast-paced world, multitasking has become not just acceptable but often expected of us. Some people even make a point of bragging about their ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. However, research suggests that multitasking can actually be detrimental to mental health and ultimately make us less productive.

So, we’d like to propose an alternative—single-tasking. Single tasking is the practice of focusing on one task at a time, and only moving onto something else when the initial task is complete. Read on to learn more about the benefits of single-tasking and how it can improve your wellbeing.

Reduces stress and anxiety

It’s actually not possible for our brains to focus on several things at the same time, and so what we tend to consider multitasking is actually just switching from one task to another at a relatively rapid pace. This can become overwhelming and exhausting, and we may end up rushing through each task just to find a bit of relief. By focusing on one thing at a time, we can reduce the mental load on our brains and feel more relaxed and in control.

Increases productivity

When we try to multitask, we often end up making more mistakes than we would focusing on one thing at a time. We then need to spend more time and energy correcting these mistakes. By giving our full attention to one task at a time, we can work more efficiently and save time for other things.

Improves focus

Constant switching between tasks causes our brains to become accustomed to getting distracted, making it more difficult to stay with a particular task. By practicing focusing on one thing at a time, we can train our brains to concentrate for longer periods and improve our ability to focus in all areas.
