Most people associate strength training with bigger, leaner muscles, assuming that it’s not necessary to include in a workout routine if building muscle isn’t one of their fitness goals. The truth is, however, that strength training offers several significant benefits that have little to do with increasing muscle size. If you’re on the fence about whether strength training is for you, read on to learn more about some of the lesser-known ways it can improve your health.

Enhanced Metabolic Rate

Regular strength training has been shown to rev up metabolism, leading to more efficient calorie burning even outside workout sessions. As muscles require more energy than fat, increased  lean muscle mass from strength training can contribute to a higher resting metabolic rate, meaning more calories burned throughout the day and more effective weight management.

Improved Joint Health

While we tend to think of each body part as an individual unit, it’s much more accurate to view the body as one whole where everything is connected. Of course regular strength training will increase muscle size, but it also plays a pivotal role in enhancing joint stability and flexibility. This can reduce the risk of injury and is especially beneficial for people with joint conditions like arthritis.

Enhanced Mental Resilience

The discipline, focus, and determination required both during and in committing to strength training sessions can show up as improved resilience in other areas of life and improve self-esteem by promoting a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, exercise triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s feel-good chemicals that reduce stress and anxiety.

The unfortunate thing about aging is that things no longer perform like they used to. One of these is our metabolism. After the age of 30, one’s metabolism slows down, meaning you may feel more sluggish than you did a decade before.

A slow metabolism also means that we may crave foods that are high in carbs and sugar and be susceptible to mood swings. The good news is, your metabolism can be reset by making a few small changes.

Get Enough Shut Eye

Sleep is crucial to an optimal metabolism. When we are sleep deprived, our bodies become stressed, pushing up our levels of cortisol. Aim to get at least eight hours of (good quality) sleep per night.

The Most Important Meal of the Day

Been told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? There’s a reason for that. Eating breakfast fast-tracks your metabolism and keeps your energy high all day. So don’t skip it.

Become a Pro at Probiotics

You can’t have a healthy metabolism without a healthy gut. Probiotics are an excellent way to bring balance to the gut and can be found through supplements or Greek yogurt. If you’re opting for the latter, make sure it states “contains active cultures”.

Stay Active At Work

Morning Stretch

Start your day off right by getting up early and doing a quick morning stretching routine. You’ll need less than 10 minutes to do a few stretching exercises that’ll help you boost your metabolism and energy levels in the morning.

Our metabolism slows down as we get older, but there are a number of other factors that lead to this happening, including a bad diet or an inactive lifestyle. For this reason, it’s important to remember that we can actually improve our metabolism—and fight father time—by engaging in some healthy habits on a consistent basis. Here are some of those habits!

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is one of the most common tips for boosting metabolism. Staying hydrated is the easiest way to increase your resting metabolism and burn fat.

Eat Colorful Foods

A healthy and nutritious diet plays an important role in boosting metabolism, so try to add more fresh fruits and veggies to your plate. Foods that are rich in antioxidants and healthy fats, such as avocados, nuts, and berries, are particularly important for a good metabolism.

Cut Back On Sugar

Eating too much sugar, processed foods, and sugary drinks can put a lot of stress on our body. They can also slow down our metabolism, so it’s best to avoid them.

Strength Training

Building muscle will boost your resting metabolism, and it’ll help you burn more calories and lose fat. Strength training two or three times a week, combined with a protein-rich diet, is perfect for adding muscle mass.

Have you noticed that the older you get, the slower your metabolism seems to be? While this is true, there are also daily habits that can affect your metabolism. If you want to have more energy while improving your metabolism, these are the bad habits you should avoid.

Skipping Breakfast

You may think that you’ll have an easier time losing weight if you skip breakfast, but this couldn’t be farther from the truth. While you’re sleeping, your metabolism slows down and eating in the morning can fire it back up, allowing you to burn more calories during the day. By skipping breakfast, you’re telling your body to conserve energy rather than burn calories. Kick start your day with a nutritious breakfast like eggs, yogurt and berries, or whole-wheat toast with peanut butter.

Being Inactive

With many of us working from home these days, we find ourselves sitting at the computer for eight or nine hours at a time, barely getting up from our seats. When you’re sitting all day, your body goes into energy-conservation mode, which ends up slowing down your metabolism.

Not Eating Enough Protein

We all know that protein is important for building and maintaining muscles, but it also leads to maintaining a healthy weight.

Juicy lemon garlic honey chicken, grilled asparagus, and walnut-parmesan pesto pastaaa 🍃🌱🥰. It doesn’t get much more spring than this! Made a big batch of my go-to basic basil-walnut-parmesan pesto earlier today (could eat this stuff by the spoonful), and it was a huge hit with the fam 💯. This pesto is just as delicious on noodles as it is on zoodles, veggies, chicken, cheese — really anything savory under the sun, and that kind of versatility lends to easy quarantine cooking 😌. It can also be frozen and thawed for delicious meals that come together in minutes. Let me know if you try it, and happy weekending! 😘 – I used @fishernutsbrand walnuts in the pesto, which are packaged fresh right out of their shells, are preservative-free, non-GMO, and gluten-free. They’re also now available on Amazon (link in bio!). #ad#thinkfisher – BASIC BASIL WALNUT PARMESAN PESTO 🍃 Servings: Makes about 1-1/4 cups (about 10 servings) INGREDIENTS 1/3 cup @fishernutsbrand walnuts 2 large garlic cloves, chopped 2 cups basil leaves, gently packed 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 2/3 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/2 cup grated parmesan INSTRUCTIONS Place the walnuts and garlic in the bowl of a food processor fitted with a steel blade. Process until coarsely chopped, about 10 seconds. Add the basil leaves, salt, and pepper and process until mixture resembles a paste, about 1 minute. With the processor running, slowly pour the olive oil through the feed tube and process until the pesto is thoroughly blended. Add the parmesan and process a minute more. Use immediately, or cover with a thin layer of olive oil and store in refrigerator for about a week. Pesto can be frozen in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

While a lot of people believe that having more muscles will increase their basal metabolism – the rate at which their body burns calories when idle – it’s actually a marginal increase that doesn’t really matter in practice.

There’s good news, though: the process of gaining muscles is much more beneficial for your health and your look. As you train, you burn calories, right? Here’s the point: gaining muscles will make you stronger, which will make you able to do more work and that’s what will burn you more calories!

We don’t want you to get discouraged and stop training because what you thought about muscles increasing your metabolism isn’t true. While the math doesn’t quite add up, there are still plenty of benefits from working out that your body can reap. Plus, as you get stronger, you’ll be able to burn more and more calories with each of your workouts, so it definitely pays out to be persistent!
