As we grow up, life gets more stressful, and taking care of our health gets more difficult. One very important aspect of good health is quality sleep, but that can be hard to accomplish after a long and stressful day. If you ever have trouble calming down after a tough day, here are some tips to help you out so that you can get a full and restful night’s sleep.

Meditation

Meditation has been found to help lower anxiety levels, even just by meditating for a few minutes a day. You can start with only 5 minutes a day, and work your way up to more time. It’s helpful to look up guided meditations or tips online. Meditating after your day is over can help you refocus on yourself and away from the worries you can’t attend to in the moment.

Exercise

A bit of intense exercise can release endorphins, which give you a “high” and help wash away those bad brain chemicals. Exercise can help you blow off steam and let out some of that stress. Don’t do this directly before bed, because it will give you more energy, but it is a great way to wear out your body a couple of hours before bed so that you’ll fall asleep faster.

Aromatherapy

Various aromas can give your body different sensations, and certain aromas are known to calm people down. If you enjoy things like scented candles, lighting one with a calming scent or using an essential oil air freshener can help turn your home into a comforting space.

Of all of the different wellness practices promoted on social media, you may be surprised to discover that there are actually several benefits to one seemingly small habit you may already do—chewing gum. Chewing gum isn’t just for keeping your breath fresh—it also offers a range of positive effects from improved oral health to reduced stress levels. If you’re looking for simple practices to improve your daily wellness routine, read on to learn more about some ways gum can benefit your health.

Improved Oral Health

Chewing sugar-free gum stimulates saliva production, which helps to neutralize acids and wash away food particles that can contribute to tooth decay and cavities over time. Additionally, the increased saliva flow can promote the remineralization of tooth enamel.

Increased Focus & Memory

The act of chewing increases blood flow to the brain, leading to enhanced focus and memory retention. Some studies have shown that chewing gum can also improve reaction time and even boost test scores. If you’ve got a big test or presentation coming up, try chewing gum while you study and see if it makes a difference.

Stress Relief

Like fidgeting or squeezing a stress ball, the repetitive motion of chewing gum can have a calming effect and help to reduce anxiety and tension. It can also serve as a healthy replacement for other more harmful habits such as nail biting or smoking.

If you’re feeling stressed and tense, yoga might be just what you need to release that tension and find some peace of mind. Yoga is a practice that has been around for thousands of years, and it’s known for its ability to reduce stress and promote relaxation.

One of the best things about yoga is that it can be done by anyone, regardless of your fitness level or flexibility. Even if you’ve never done yoga before, there are plenty of beginner-friendly classes that will help you get started.

During a typical yoga class, you’ll move through a series of poses that help stretch and strengthen your body, while also calming your mind. Some popular poses for stress relief include child’s pose, forward fold, and corpse pose.

In addition to the physical benefits of yoga, it’s also a great way to connect with your breath and cultivate mindfulness. By focusing on your breath and being present in the moment, you can quiet your mind and let go of the worries and stresses of daily life.

So, if you’re feeling tense and stressed, give yoga a try. Whether you take a class at a studio or follow along with a video at home, you might be surprised at how much better you feel after just one session.

Whether you’re a regular mediator and want to deepen your practice or just in need of a little relaxation, sound baths may be just the thing for you. Sound bathing is a form of meditation that incorporates sound waves to promote relaxation and healing. During a sound bath, meditators lie down or sit comfortably while a facilitator plays singing bowls, gongs, and chimes. While there’s definitely something to be said for the experience of a live session, there are plenty of sound bath recordings available on YouTube which are just as effective. Here are a few we love and recommend.

1 Hour Chakra Cleanse

Chakras are energy centers associated with physical and spiritual well-being according to ancient Indian tradition. This sound bath uses seven bowls, each with a distinct vibration to help you connect with the energy of each center. It’ll leave you with a full body feeling of calm.

10 Minute Crystal Singing Bowl Meditation

This sound bath by yoga teacher Jessica Richburg is a short and sweet option for when you’re short on time. She uses three bowls to create relaxing sounds which melt away stress and soothe the mind and body.

Total Calm Sound Bath Performance

For a more dynamic experience, we love this performance by sound bath facilitator Healing Vibrations. It incorporates over 10 instruments including crystal bowls, chimes, and drums and makes a beautiful accompaniment for any meditation or even spa treatment.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, right? For some of us, sure, but for others, all of the seasonal hustle and bustle can leave us feeling more frustrated than festive. Planning, prepping, and present-wrapping require a lot of time and energy, so it’s important to take some time to de-stress to prevent burnout. One of our favorite ways to practice self-care is with yoga. A good class can help us to feel grounded and restored so that we can handle whatever the season brings.

Yoga for Anxiety and Stress

Yoga with Adriene’s class for reducing stress is one of the most popular on YouTube for a reason—she never fails to give us exactly what we need. It starts off with slow, gentle movements and guided breathwork and then incorporates some more dynamic movement and balancing poses before finishing off with a few minutes of hip stretches before savasana.

Restorative Yoga for Stress Relief

This slow-paced class by Jessica Richburg includes lots of deep stretching and grounding poses like child’s pose, pigeon, and spinal twists. It ends with an extra-long guided savasana, making it ideal for winding down at the end of the day.

10 Minute Yoga Stress and Anxiety

This class by Yoga with Bird is perfect for when you’re in need of some R&R but also pressed for time. It’s full of gentle hip stretches and twists and is just long enough to leave you feeling refreshed and reset.

As much as we love to get a good sweat in and challenge ourselves with strenuous workouts, sometimes our bodies really are in need of a deeper break than one rest day can provide. It can be tempting to try to push through when we’re working toward a particular goal, but in the long run, it’s more important to prioritize listening to your body’s needs, even if it means taking a little more time to reach the goals we’ve set.

Here are some signs to look out for that could indicate your body needs some rest from intense workouts (and what to do instead).

Soreness That Lasts Longer Than Usual

It’s normal to feel a bit sore for a couple of days after an intense workout, but if you find that your muscles are feeling sore or hot for longer than is typical for you, this could be a sign that your body needs a break. Try some gentle stretching or even an ice bath to help soothe tired muscles and calm inflammation.

Working Out has Suddenly Become Difficult

That is—more difficult than usual. It’s okay to push yourself a bit during workouts, but if your regular exercise routine has suddenly become much more difficult than usual, your body may be in need of a few days of rest.

Emotional Changes or Feeling Stressed

Physical exhaustion can cause imbalances with certain hormones in our bodies and leave us feeling emotionally depleted. If you’ve been working out a lot and are experiencing unusually low moods, it’s probably time to take some time off. Prioritize getting deep rest through sleep and meditation.

With everything happening in the world around us these days, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. As we enter a new year of the pandemic, it’s difficult to find ways to cope when we’re restricted to staying at home. We used to get massages or acupuncture when stressed, but now, we have to find ways to relieve tension on our own. Here are three tried and true ways to alleviate stress at home.

Essential Oils

While meditating, use essential oils to make the experience even more relaxing. Next time you meditate, incorporate lavender, lemongrass, or peppermint essential oils into your routine. You can even put a few drops into your bath or in a diffuser to fill your room.

Massage Balls

Massage balls are not only great after a workout, they’re ideal for any time you’re feeling stressed. The balls mimic a masseuse’s hands and they’ll help alleviate stress in hard-to-reach places.

Weighted Blankets

Human touch is said to slow the heart rate and reduce stress, but during the pandemic our contact with others is limited. An alternative is a weighted blanket, which mimic hugs. Let’s be honest, who couldn’t use a nice warm hug now?

In the modern world, stress is the biggest threat to public health. It inflicts emotional damage, weakens the immune system, and causes the build-up of toxins in the body. In this time of coronavirus, when many of us can’t go to the gym or see friends to release our stress, it is more important than ever that we learn effective stress relief techniques that can be implemented from home. Here are five you can try this week.

Stress Ball

A great way to relieve your stress is to invest in a stress ball. This is a little squishy rubber ball that you can squeeze when you feel stressed. This helps your body release that extra tension in a quick and efficient way.

Listen to Music

It mind sound obvious, but listening to relaxing music is a really effective way to reduce your stressed and feel relaxed. Just sit back and enjoy the soothing atmosphere.

Cold

If you’re feeling stressed, it can be good to try and cool yourself down. You could do this with a wet flannel, a cold shower, a walk in the night air, or a fan.
