]]>The study in question was published by JAMA Internal Medicine and it was based on data collected from over 350,000 adults who shared information about their training habits. The study suggests that “weekend warriors” and regularly active participants may experience the same benefits and lower the risk of premature death.
“These findings suggest that whether the recommended amount of moderate to vigorous physical activity is spread out during the week or concentrated into fewer days, there may be no significant difference in health benefits,” reads the study.
To reap the benefits of your workouts, it’s still important to stick to the World Health Organization’s suggestions of at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. The way you spread out your workout sessions is up to you, but it’s crucial to stay cautious and avoid doing super-intense workouts after a whole week with zero activity.

]]>This is very important as it tells us about one way to prevent childhood obesity. The study was done using food questionnaires on 443 people who answered questions about the meals and snacks they ate as kids.
They were asked if they used to get food as a reward, if they were pressured to eat, if they got healthy guidance about food, or if they were monitored during meals. People who thought about food as a reward or who were pressured into “cleaning the plate” during every meal tended to eat more sweets, snacks, and other unhealthy items as adults.
People who had “healthy eating guidance,” which the researchers find to be the best practice, consume more fruits and vegetables today as adults. Healthy eating guidance includes actively influencing food behaviors, introducing whole foods, and including kids in preparing food. Preventing childhood obesity is the gateway to living a long and healthy life filled with good habits that many people today lack.

]]>A study conducted by NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing shows that people who try two or more different workout routines throughout the month are more likely to reach their fitness goals, and concluded that active adults are more likely to engage in several different types of psychical activity.
When it comes to the most popular workouts among the study participants, walking, cycling, dancing, working out on a treadmill, and weightlifting led the way. The most active adults participated in up to five different activities per month.
This isn’t the first study that concluded that adding variety to your workouts can yield better results. Back in 2000, a study conducted by the University of Florida came to a conclusion that people with a varied exercise program were 63% more likely to stick to their routine because having variety in your workout routine increases enjoyment and motivation.

]]>A recent study found that people tend to believe that aesthetically pleasing food is healthier. In practice, this is a part of a big problem where huge amounts of perishable foods are discarded day after day.
Researcher Linda Hagen, Ph.D., who works at the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California found that the participants see food as more “natural” when it follows the classic aesthetic principles like symmetry, order, and balance.
Another problem this bias creates is that people can easily perceive unhealthy food as healthy when it’s photographed to look pretty. This is used to market fast food and other unhealthy choices to people not as indulgence, but as healthy choices that are good for them.
The study participants also believed that pretty looking food is fresher, safer, lower in calories, better prepared, and that it has higher quality ingredients.
Think about this the next time you go grocery shopping and keep in mind that your brain is sometimes playing tricks on you!

]]>The study was published in JAMA Internal Medicine and included 151 individuals and lasted for 12 weeks. When it comes to the participants who were clinically overweight or obese, it turned out that IF didn’t mean they would lose weight.
Fasting has always been a part of human culture. There are many different reasons why one decides to fast for a certain period of time and they range from religious to health-related. The most popular way of intermittent fasting is 16:8, which means you would fast for 16 hours and eat all your daily food within an 8-hour window. For some people, this means skipping breakfast, for other skipping dinner, but it ultimately doesn’t matter. The main goal is to limit the number of calories you consume daily and limiting the eating hours is a great way to achieve that.

]]>The current recommendation for older adults is to pursue low-intensity, low-impact activities. These are believed to be easier on the joints, but apparently, some higher intensity workouts could only do them good.
“We act like older adults are so fragile, and they can’t handle intensity and impact or it will destroy their bones and joints, but we’ve found the opposite is true,” Belinda Beck, Ph.D., told Very Well Fit. Peck is a researcher at Australian Griffith University and the director of The Bone Clinic. She noted that there have been studies that indicated that bones can react positively to high-intensity activities, which may reduce the need for medication.

]]>“This qualitative assessment has shown that the health benefits (or null effects) clearly outweigh the risks of moderate coffee consumption in adult consumers for the majority of health outcomes considered. Results from this research may aid further qualitative and quantitative deterministic risk-benefit assessments of coffee consumption,” the study reads.
The study was conducted at Ulster University in the UK where the researchers reviewed over 1,200 previous studies all the way back to the 1970s. They found mixed results, but most of the findings pointed out that three or four cups of coffee per day don’t have bad effects on health. In fact, they offer some health benefits.
One thing the researchers pointed out is that they don’t have enough information to tell if this is true for all other caffeine, like tea and soda, or if it’s specifically true for coffee. But if you’re a coffee fan, you can continue to drink your favorite beverage without worrying!

]]>As Marcelo Bigliassi from the University of London and his colleagues found, listening to music during a workout led to a 28% increase in enjoyment compared with not listening to anything.
“The brain mechanisms that underlie the psychological effects of auditory stimuli during physical activity are hitherto under-researched; particularly so in ecologically valid settings,” noted the study authors. “We showed that music has the potential to increase beta waves and elicit a more positive emotional state. This can be capitalized upon during other forms of exercise and render a given activity more pleasurable.”

]]>The idea is that nuts help you feel full longer and crave junk food less, which leads to weight loss or prevents weight gain in the long-term. The researchers examined the diet data of over 280,000 adults who participated in three long-term studies. The results were derived from over 20 years of monitoring the participants and asking them about their weight changes and nut-eating habits.
What they found is that eating nuts regularly correlates with not gaining weight over time and a lower risk of obesity. The difference between those who ate nuts regularly and those who only ate them occasionally was that the former typically gained half a pound less per year than the latter, which can definitely add up over the years.
Nuts contain plenty of healthy fats and are an important part of a healthy, balanced diet. As long as you don’t eat too much of them, you can reap many health benefits.

After six weeks, the results showed that participants who ate breakfast after physical activity “burned double the amount of fat,” according to Dr. Javier Gonzalz of UK’s Department of Health.
“The group who exercised before breakfast increased their ability to respond to insulin, which is all the more remarkable given that both exercise groups lost a similar amount of weight and both gained a similar amount of fitness. The only difference was the timing of the food intake,” Dr. Gonzalez said.
