Antibiotics are often the first line of defense to kill bacteria and help us feel better when we have an infection, but did you know that our bodies are also full of good bacteria that play an important role in health and well-being? Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms that live in our gut and support a variety of functions, such as digestion and immunity. While we should already have plenty of good bacteria living in our digestive tracts, there are also certain benefits that can come with taking a probiotic supplement.

Improved Digestive Health

Probiotic supplements aid in maintaining a balanced gut flora, which is essential for proper digestion. They help break down food, enhance nutrient absorption, and prevent harmful bacteria from thriving in the intestines. This can alleviate common digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, and diarrhea, promoting a healthier digestive system.

Strengthened Immune System

Approximately 70% of our immune system resides in our gut, and the gut microbiome supports immunity by stimulating the production and activity of immune cells. Regular intake of probiotic supplements has been linked to a reduced risk of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, making them an excellent choice for anyone looking to maintain a strong immune system.

Enhanced Mental Well-Being

The gut and brain are closely connected through the gut-brain axis, and probiotics have been shown to have a significant impact on our mental health. Some studies suggest that taking a probiotic supplement can regulate mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression by positively influencing gut-brain communication.

If you are looking for ways to mix up your lower body exercises, then it’s time to add in the Cossack squat. This is a low-impact, mobility and strength exercise that will work wonders for your hips and lower back. The Cossack squat is a lateral exercise that you do by squatting down on one leg while extending the other leg out to the side.

…………

Whilst most lower body exercises work on moving your body forward or backward, not many of them work on the frontal plane of motion. Since the Cossack squat involves moving side to side, it can help prevent muscle imbalances and train the body in different directions that what it is used to with squats and lunges.

The Cossack squat also supports hip mobility as it opens and strengthens the hip joint. As you go down and up, you flex and extend the hip on the working leg. Your hip adductors on the extended leg will also receive a good stretch with the movement.

This squat will also keep your joints safe as it is really low impact and is done mostly with body weight. It also works on all your lower body muscle groups, especially the gluteus medius and your obliques.

Running on the beach provides a beautiful backdrop for your workout, but it also challenges your body in a different way than running on solid ground. To make your training more effective, it’s important to be aware of both the benefits and the risks. Here are three major upsides of running on the beach.

It Builds Strength and Stabilizes Muscles

Running on the beach is harder compared to running on the pavement because the muscles of your legs and feet have to work harder. Plus, the uneven surface makes you engage your stabilizing and core muscles too. This makes beach runs more efficient too.

It Helps You Improve Your Running Technique

Because sand is soft, it gives way when you push off to take the next step. This means that some of the elastic energy that is usually transferred to that next step is lost. In order to be able to run powerfully on the sand, your body must learn and develop a smooth-running technique with a stable push-off.

Increases Calorie Burn

As we said, beach running makes the muscle groups involved in the run work harder than usual, which requires more energy. That makes it a super-efficient calorie burner!

A lot of the time, when we want to begin a health or fitness journey, we think of taking these big, huge, life-changing steps. We imagine ourselves starting to go to the gym every single day, training to run a marathon, or changing our diet around completely. And while these changes will certainly give you benefits, they’re also hard to sustain and difficult to execute. But the good news is that even small changes can make a big difference to your health. Here are a few examples.

Drinking Less

People don’t tend to think about alcohol when they think about fitness and health, but the truth is that it can make a big impact on your health and workouts. Even just cutting down your alcohol consumption a little can leave you with much more energy and the ability to commit to healthier habits.

Running Slower

Do you hate running? Does it make you feel like your heart is going to beat out of your chest? Chances are that you’re running too fast for your endurance capacity. Even though it might feel strange, running slower will make you be able to run for much longer and probably allow you to enjoy running more.

Get Rest

Sometimes we can be so focused on working out that we forget to let our bodies recover. Taking the time to rest every so often will allow your body to continue working out in the long run.

We all have our own reasons for working out. Maybe we want to achieve a healthier body weight, maybe we want to reduce our risk of diseases, maybe we want to improve our mental health. Whatever the case may be, we all know that exercise has plenty of benefits. But in addition to the more obvious ones, there are also some lesser talked-about benefits that make working out even more worth it. For example…

Perseverance

If you’ve ever done a plank, you know how tempting it can be to give up when the going gets tough. But exercise teaches you to push through even when something is uncomfortable, increasing your tolerance for challenges and discomfort.

Better Sleep

When you exercise, your body is desperate to recover afterward, and it helps you sleep like a baby, which in turn gives you more energy and makes you feel better the following day.

Confidence

Whether it’s because you’ve hit a new PR, gone down (or up!) a pants size, figured out a new yoga pose you could never do before, or something else, exercise can make you feel better about yourself and give you a sense of pride in yourself that really puts a spring in your step.

What’s your favorite lesser talked-about benefit of working out?

We know, the idea of getting out of your warm bed only to subject your body to icy water may not sound like the most appealing way to start your day, but hear us out. Recent research is suggesting that there are numerous benefits of immersing in cold water. While you will receive the benefits regardless of which time of day you shower, this practice does tend to have an invigorating effect, and so we recommend it as something to do in the morning rather than right before bed. Even ending your regular shower with 30 seconds to a minute of cold water can be enough if you’re curious, but not quite ready for the full-length thing.

Improves Circulation

Cold water on your skin stimulates blood flow to your internal organs by temporarily constricting circulation on the surface so that blood is directed toward deeper tissues. This can reduce inflammation and help keep your skin clear as well.

Lowers Cortisol

Cortisol is also known as “the stress hormone,” as our bodies tend to make more of it when we experience stressful situations. Over time, high levels of cortisol can lead to things like acne, fatigue, and “brain fog,” or difficulty concentrating. Some studies have shown that up to 3 minutes of a cold shower can help reduce cortisol levels. You’ll be wide awake and ready for the day.

Stand-up paddleboarding, or SUP, has been gaining a lot of popularity recently, and there are good reasons for that. If you still haven’t tried this sport, here are a few reasons why you must do so.

Anyone Can Do It

Unlike surfing, kiteboarding, or windsurfing, you can pretty much get on a board and paddle away after one beginner lesson on the basics and safety precautions.

It’s a Full Body Workout

Some of the world’s top athletes from various sports use SUP to cross-train because it’s such an effective workout. When you paddle, you engage various muscles, burning calories, increasing your heart rate, and getting those endorphins. SUP forces you to activate muscles from your shoulders down to your toes, making it a full-body workout.

It Has Mental Health Benefits

Exercise is well known for its positive effect on our mental health, and SUP is no different. Moreover, it has the advantage of being done in nature, which is also scientifically proven to help us relax. A SUP session is literally giving your overworked mind a break.

It’s a Great Way to Explore

Being out in the water allows us the adventure of exploration and discovery. SUP is a sport that gives those who practice it the chance to experience new thrills and see the world from a different perspective.

Mat classes tend to be dominated by women, and Pilates is no different. But this stigma of sorts should definitely not deter men who are interested in trying this sport. Pilates holds plenty of benefits for men who are willing to rise to the challenge, and yes, it’s harder than you think. Here are a few of the reasons to incorporate Pilates in your fitness routine.

It Improves Flexibility

Poor flexibility is often a major cause of muscle pain and injuries. Improved flexibility will not only help you perform better in other sports but will also make day-to-day life feel more comfortable.

It Develops Often Neglected Muscle Group

The muscles that dominate our daily movements are naturally stronger than those that don’t get as much attention. But these less frequently used muscle groups are exactly the ones Pilates focuses on. When practicing Pilates you consciously move in certain ways to build muscles that you don’t hit in most other exercise forms.

It Builds Core Strength

Every Pilates exercise focuses on using your core to power movement in your limbs. The core muscles of the body are the deep muscles of the back, abdomen, and pelvic floor.

It Improves Posture

A good posture is the result of good body alignment that is supported by a strong core. Pilates largely focuses on correcting postural imbalances that can occur from sustaining unnatural positions for a long period of time, like working at a desk.

Running is one of the most popular exercise types in the world. But it’s also a high-impact activity that can lead to lower-body injuries. One way to mix up your routine as a runner is to try aqua jogging—a form of exercise that crossbreeds running and swimming. It can help maintain cardiovascular endurance, be done indoors or outdoors, in a guided class, or independently.

Who Is Aqua Jogging Best Suited For?

Aqua jogging is a low-impact exercise that can reduce the wear and tear from road running. As such it’s great for older adults, and injured runners. Water-based exercises have been shown to help with the regeneration of new muscle fibers, so aqua running allows you to stay active while you heal.

Another demographic that can benefit from this sport are pregnant women. Just like other water aerobics, water jogging is a safe option for those who are expecting.

What Are the Benefits of Aqua Jogging?

Water jogging is great for building strength. According to the Arthritis Foundation, water provides 12 times the resistance of air. Because it’s harder to move through, you work harder when jogging in water, and thus burn more calories and increase muscle strength.
