If you’re looking for a new fitness routine and are a fan of classes, then it might be time to start trying out some of the best fitness classes that New York City has to offer. Lucky for you, we’ve tested many of them and got you covered with some honest reviews of some of NYC’s popular gym classes.

Soul Cycle

Soul Cycle is a great choice if you’re looking to do spin in a fun, supportive, and non-competitive environment. They often have fun-themed rides, which is great for fans of pop sensations like Taylor Swift. The trainers are really high energy and motivational. It is not the most budget-friendly option, however; so if you’re looking for a less expensive option, Cyclebar is also great.

Barry’s

Barry’s is excellent if you’re looking to torch calories and be challenged. It’s a tough workout combining speed intervals on the treadmill followed by weight sessions. This is also on the costlier side, so if you’re looking for a more affordable option, Orange Theory is an option.

Rumble Boxing

Rumble is excellent for core and cardio movements in a high-energy workout environment. The class combines boxing sessions with weight training for the ultimate HIIT and sweat session.

Mile High Run Club

This boutique gym has a few studios across NYC and offers speed and interval treadmill training and is taught by expert running coaches. This is an excellent option for those training for a race, or just looking to add some cardio to their routines.

When it comes to sports that pack a punch, few can rival the intensity and excitement of boxing. But did you know that boxing isn’t just for professional fighters? It’s also an incredible sport for fitness enthusiasts looking to level up their workouts. In this post, we’ll explore why boxing is such an amazing sport for fitness and why you should consider incorporating it into your fitness routine.

Full-Body Workout

Boxing is a high-intensity, full-body workout that engages multiple muscle groups simultaneously. From the explosive movements in your lower body as you pivot and generate power, to the rapid arm movements as you throw punches, boxing challenges your entire body. It improves cardiovascular endurance, strengthens muscles, and helps burn calories more efficiently than many other workouts.

Cardiovascular Fitness

Boxing is synonymous with cardio. The constant movement, combination punches, and footwork require substantial cardiovascular endurance. By engaging in boxing training, you’ll elevate your heart rate, increase lung capacity, and improve overall cardiovascular fitness. It’s a fun and effective way to burn calories, improve stamina, and boost your energy levels.

Coordination and Agility

Boxing is a sport that requires precision, timing, and coordination. The constant combination of punches, defensive moves, and footwork challenges your hand-eye coordination and helps improve your reflexes. As you practice boxing techniques, you’ll enhance your agility, balance, and overall body control.

Strength and Power

Throwing punches involves engaging your upper body muscles, including the shoulders, arms, back, and core. Through repetitive punching drills and bag work, boxing helps build upper body strength and power. Additionally, the footwork, stance, and rotational movements involved in boxing also engage the lower body muscles, promoting overall strength development.

Improving your balance is essential for improving your daily life activities and movements. Although it seems simple, exercises for improved balance can be really challenging. Here are some of the best workouts that really improve your balance.

Each of these options is really different in how they work on your balance, but they all have one thing in common: they will help your body prepare to stabilize and balance throughout the daily motions of your life.

Boxing

Because boxing is a very quick, reactive sport, it helps improve balance a lot. Learning how to move your feet quickly and dodge obstacles helps your body do this in real life as well! It also strengthens your core and overall body muscles, so that you can handle any challenges throughout your day.

Pilates

Pilates is another way that you can improve your balance. It’s no surprise, in fact, that pilates was created to help achieve strength, mobility, and flexibility for boxers! Pilates workouts often target the deep core, which helps you stabilize yourself if you lose balance or trip on something.

Yoga

Yoga is probably the first type of exercise you think of when you think of balance. With poses like handstands and tree poses, yoga is constantly improving balance. Even in poses that seem less “balance-focused”, your body is learning how to quickly and smoothly adjust to different positions.

Michael B. Johnson may be the main star of Creed III, but all eyes are on Jonathan Majors in the third part of the boxing trilogy. The Top Gun: Maverick actor plays Creed’s friend-turned-foe, Damian “Dame” Anderson, and he certainly bulked up for the role!

“We needed somebody physically formidable, you know, on top of his stuff,” Majors explained.

Part of the 33-year-old actor’s workout routine was sparring with professional boxers, which makes sense considering Creed III is part of the Rocky universe. Majors took part in two training sessions each day, starting at 4 a.m.

“Right now I’m probably four [percent] body fat but also five or six pounds heavier than [when I was on set],” he revealed.

So, what exactly did the actor, who also stars in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, do to get in shape?

His routine starts with three sets of straight arm lat pulldowns, each of which includes 10 reps. That is followed by three sets of close grip pull-ups and leg raises at 10–12 and 8–10 reps each, and by three sets of oblique knee raises at eight reps apiece.

Majors also focused on dumbbell exercises and followed a diet of rice and lean proteins, such as chicken, turkey, and bison.

There is something so therapeutic about punching a heavy bag, sweating it out, and getting your heart rate up. You may think of boxing as a great way to release some stress or anger, but did you know it has so many other benefits as well?

Improves Cardiovascular Health

Boxing is a great form of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), which has been proven to boost cardiovascular health. This form of training is also shown to reduce your risk of heart disease. An added benefit is that you will gain endurance and be able to sustain high intensity exercises for longer amounts of time.

Gain Full-Body Strength

One of the greatest benefits of boxing is it works your entire body—your arms, shoulders, legs, abs, back—pretty much every muscle you can think of. Boxing builds strength and stability and sharpens your reflexes over time. If you’re looking to tone your entire body, boxing is a great choice.

Boosts Mental Health

Any form of exercise is proven to boost mental health, but boxing in particular has a great effect on the mind. It is a great stress reliever and the boost in your heart rate will leave you with a smile on your face (even as you’re panting to catch your breath!).

Jumping rope is a fabulous cardio exercise and is a favorite for boxers, who use it for strength and balance. But there are many other reasons you should incorporate it into your weekly routine. Ten minutes per week is enough to see results and feel the benefits. Here are four reasons to jump rope every week

Improves Bone Strength

Jumping rope requires that you put weight on your bones which is a great way to improve your bone health. For young people, jumping rope helps the development of the bones. When we are older, we need to do more weight-bearing exercises to decrease the chance of osteoporosis. It also prevents injury—the stronger the bones, the harder they are to break.

Improves Cardiovascular Health

Jumping rope is higher in intensity than some other forms of cardio such as walking or cycling, and is really good for your heart and lungs. You don’t need to spend hours on the cardio machine to feel good. Just take your trusted jump rope and do interval training or HIIT for 10 minutes to reap the benefits.

Improves your Balance and Coordination

If you start slow and keep a manageable pace, you will see your coordination improve. Your balance will also get better as you do most of the movement on your toes, so you need to engage the core every time you jump.

Do It Anywhere

You don’t need a gym or lots of equipment—all you need a jump rope and space. Most jump ropes are lightweight so you can put it into a small bag and take it to a park or on vacation with you.

Martial arts are a category of physical activity tradition used for a number of purposes in many different cultures. They may be defensive, offensive, combative, or even introspective. If you’re looking for a new hobby or way to get in shape, trying martial arts is a great option. Here are three martial arts from various cultures to give a go.

Shorinji Kempo

This Japanese martial art was created just after World War II as a way to combine spiritual growth and personal health with self-defense. It’s actually a modified version of Shaolin Kung Fu and includes traditional moves like punching and kicking as well as relying strongly on paired practice and sparring.

Qwan Ki Do

Originating in Vietnam in the 1960s, Qwan Ki Do translates to “the way of the body” and is taught all over the world. It uses traditional sweeps, kicks, and punches as well as artistic-looking routines and sparring. There are also mental health activities associated with it such as meditation. It is focused especially on morality, honesty, gratitude, and other virtues.

Panantukan

Also known as Filipino boxing, this martial art is designed for street fighters rather than for artistic combat. It is a little more intense with moves like headbutts, elbowing, and low blows as well as targeting many areas of the body that are usually off-limits in more regulated martial arts.

If you think that boxing and cardio are two fitness programs that don’t mix well together, Pamela Reif is here to change your mind. One of her latest workout videos perfectly blends these two routines into one, and it’s truly the best of both worlds.

The popular fitness influencer said that this routine has a high potential to become one of her favorite forms of cardio, and added it will make you feel like you’re at a festival or a dance party.

“It’s a mix out of classic aerobic steps & lots of boxing movements. Not sure if those 2 topics are MEANT to go together, but I think it fits amazingly! I had to test the routine so many times but I am reallyyyyy happy about the results,” wrote Pamela Reif on Youtube.

One of the best things about this workout is that it’s apartment-friendly and low-impact. Even if you’re working out at home, you can easily give it a try because it involves no burpees, no jumps, or any other loud movements that could upset your neighbors.

It only takes 15 minutes to go through all the exercises, which will help you target several muscle groups and burn some major calories along the way.

Halle Berry is one of those celebrities who regularly shares her fitness routine online, and the more we learn about it, the more impressed we are. The Oscar-winning actress recently shared a photo of her toned abs, that she owes to the combination of boxing and MMA.

This isn’t the first time that Berry shared her love for boxing with the world. She previously gushed about it in one of her Instagram posts from 2018 and called it “one of the best full-body workouts” because it allows you to sculpt every muscle and burn major calories and fat along the way.

Berry enjoys boxing because it helps you build confidence and decrease stress, but it’s not the only routine she uses to get an epic six-pack. She also described mixed martial arts, such as jiu-jitsu and capoeira, as “a recipe for really strong abs.”

Berry also said that MMA has been one of the biggest game-changers for her abs because you’re using your core the whole time. Even after years of doing crunches and sit-ups, the combination of boxing and martial arts did more for her six pack than any other fitness routine.
