Tell us if this sounds like you. You wake up, get ready, make a cup of coffee, and down it before dashing out of the house. Or perhaps brewing is not your thing and you prefer to pick up a barista-quality cup on your way to work. What both scenarios have in common is that it involves having coffee for breakfast — and nothing else.

Coffee is Not a Meal Replacement

Yes, coffee can be a good thing. Caffeine gives us an energy spurt, it’s full of antioxidants, and some people say it helps keep them regular. But what it is not, is a meal. Having coffee on an empty stomach can make you feel its caffeinated effects quicker, but it adds very little nutrients to your diet. Not the ideal way to start a day. Breakfast should consist of protein, healthy fat, and high-fiber carbs to keep your blood sugar, energy, and productivity levels steady.

Coffee Can Make You Anxious

Coffee can also hike up your anxiety levels if there is nothing in your system to balance it out. We are definitely not telling you not to have a cuppa Joe in the morning. All we are saying is, please don’t let it be the only thing you’re having in the morning.

We’ve all heard the saying, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but what does that really mean? Is it even true? Well, health experts seem to be in agreement that it really is true. Breakfast is not just important because it’s just another meal, but because it truly sets you up for the entire day. The food you eat at breakfast really impacts your energy and mood.

So, what’s the biggest mistake people make when deciding what to eat for breakfast? The answer is not eating enough protein! Eating a breakfast with enough protein is crucial to having a satisfying and nutritious breakfast.

Eating a significant amount of protein with your breakfast ensures that you feel full and satisfied for hours after you eat. It also gives you long-lasting energy to give you the power to get through your morning–and even the rest of the day.

If you only eat carbs and/or fiber for breakfast, you will probably be hungry shortly after eating. Not to mention, you might begin feeling fatigued halfway through the day. So, do yourself a favor and make sure your breakfast always has a good portion of protein in it. Your body will thank you for it.

When you first wake up, your stomach is empty. Your body just spent the entire night digesting the food you ate the previous day. This is why when you first wake up, you might notice that your stomach looks a lot flatter. This is often the stomach we see floating around on Instagram, as influencers show off their defined abs and flat stomachs.

The reality is, though, that our bodies fluctuate throughout the day. The problem is, when we only see those “perfectly” flat stomachs on social media, we might subconsciously feel insecure when our stomach looks different after eating a nourishing breakfast—even though it’s totally normal!

Thankfully, people are showing off their bellies before AND after eating, to show the world that it’s okay. We love that people are promoting “normal” bodies on social media because it helps spread body positivity. It also shines a light on the fact that most of what we see on social media is carefully curated and not always an accurate view of what people look like throughout the day.

These posts show the side-by-side of their stomach when they first wake up, and then after eating. You can see that there is a difference, often their stomachs are a bit more full or plump-looking, which makes sense because their stomachs are full of yummy food!

Let’s be real, most mornings it’s so hard to get out of bed. If you’re like most people in the world, you probably rely on your morning coffee to officially wake you up from your deep slumber. The rush of caffeine feels like the perfect way to start your day. But what if there was a better way to sustain your energy throughout the day?

Most people go straight to the coffee machine (or Starbucks!) before even thinking about breakfast…or anything else for that matter. While we totally get that, it might actually be hurting you more than it’s helping. Studies have shown that having coffee on an empty stomach could actually interfere with your cortisol levels, leaving you even more fatigued by the end of the day. The best way to combat this issue is to have a balanced breakfast and wait at least an hour before reaching for the caffeine.

We also wake up super dehydrated and coffee just dehydrates us more! It is highly recommended to drink water immediately after waking up, so you should try to for that before the morning coffee.

Despite how hard it might be to replace the habit of immediately getting your caffeine fix in the morning, drinking water and eating a full breakfast before drinking your coffee will leave you feeling better and more energized throughout the entire day!

When it comes to choosing your avocado topping, the possibilities are truly endless, but that doesn’t mean you should choose just about anything. Avocado toast toppings are not created equal, and this brief guide will help you make the right choice between some of the most popular options on the market.

Do: Eggs

Eggs and avo are a timeless classic for a reason. One of the avocados’ main downsides is its relatively low protein content, and you can right this wrong by adding some eggs to the mix.

Don’t: Bacon

Pork bacon is a pretty popular avocado toast topping, but it’s usually deep fried and a major source of saturated fats, so it’s best avoided.

Do: Fruits and Veggies

Delicious, refreshing, and rich in fiber, fruits, and veggies are always a great addition to avocado toast, whether you’re opting for cucumbers and radishes or strawberries and blueberries.

Don’t: Cheese

Cheese is simply irresistible, but you should resist the temptation to use it as avocado toast topping due to its high-fat content.

Do: Smoked Salmon

Smoked salmon is another popular avocado toast topping that deserves all the attention that it’s getting. It’s a great source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids, and it will truly do wonders for your avo toast.

We all know that we have to eat versatile food from all the food groups if we want to stay healthy and feel good, but could there be advantages to having the same breakfast every single day? Breakfast is important but we don’t always have time to think about it first thing in the morning, so turning it into a routine task can be good for more than one reason.

It Saves Time

By creating a routine around your breakfast, you can save a significant amount of time in the morning. All you need is to make sure you always have the ingredients ready and you’ll speed up the process the more you repeat it, and even do it without thinking after a while. This means you can make your breakfast before waking up completely and you don’t have to make any decisions first thing in the morning.

Better Nutrition

Focusing on nutrition instead of getting creative with flavors for breakfast will allow you to fuel your body with healthy foods without a second thought.

Helps Lose Weight

By having a routine, you can focus on the number of calories and what sources they come from, which can help you lose weight in the long run. A good breakfast will also keep you full and prevent snacking throughout the day.

Fiber is essential to your body, especially if you want to lose a few pounds or have a more balanced diet. Fiber keeps you feeling fuller for longer and can stop mindless snacking. It can help protect you against diabetes, heart disease, and some forms of cancer. It is easily found in whole foods and there are a lot of choices for you to get your fill, which should be 25-38g per day. Here are four high fiber foods to eat every day.

Broccoli

Broccoli is so versatile—it can be roasted, boiled, steamed, or eaten raw. You can add it to salads or make it in to a soup. It is filled with fiber and lots of essential vitamins and minerals.

Quinoa

Not only is quinoa a great source of protein, it is also filled with lots of fiber. It is a great side dish that goes with everything and can be added to tacos or a salad.

Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are a really easy way to get some fiber into your breakfast meal. You can make chia pudding or add them to your granola and yogurt. They are also a good source of omega fatty acids.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are full of fiber and a great source of vitamin A, to help your vision. Swap out your usual potatoes for these sweet ones—they are just as versatile and taste so delicious.
