Sports drinks are packed with sugar and electrolytes and they can be a good post-workout beverage for professional athletes. But are they really as healthy as we think and could everyone benefit from consuming them? Here are a few things you should know about sports drinks.

Packed With Sugar

The first thing you need to know about sports drinks is that they contain a lot of sugar. Even though they’re often considered healthy, the truth is that these beverages are packed with sugar. For that reason it’s best to avoid them if you’re trying to lose weight.

They Can Be Helpful

Athletes lose a lot of electrolytes through sweat during intense workouts, and drinking sports drinks right after workouts is a good way to replace them. These drinks also contain carbs that are important for boosting energy levels and rebuilding muscles after exercise.

Not For Non-Athletes

Even though drinking sports drinks can be beneficial after long high-intensity workouts, people who are not professional athletes should avoid them because they contain lots of sugar.

It’s Best To Drink Water

Drinking water is by far the best and safest way to hydrate your body after a workout. As we’ve mentioned, sports drinks can be beneficial for athletes who exercise for more than one hour a day, but otherwise it’s best to reach for water first.

If you want to change your morning routine a bit or you just want to drink less coffee, chai tea may be just what you’re looking for. Originating from India, this black tea is served with a variety of spices and is often prepared with milk and sugar. The spices used in it include cardamom, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, and others. Keep reading to learn about chai tea benefits and how to prepare it at home.

Health Benefits

The nutrients of chai tea depend on what goes into it. Black tea is full of antioxidants, amino acids, and vitamins A, K, and C. If it contains ginger, you can count on there being more vitamin C and several B vitamins. Cardamom comes with potassium, calcium, and magnesium, and there’s folate, calcium, and potassium that can be found in clove and cinnamon.

Milky Fun

Adding milk and honey to chai tea gives you additional nutrients. There are many recipes for chai tea and one of our favorites comes from the Foodess website. “What I love so much about it is that the tea is actually brewed in milk and water in a saucepan on the stove—so it stays piping hot until ready to be drunk, rather than cooling down as it steeps in a teapot,” writes the author of the recipe.

Aloe vera juice is celebrated for its good effects on health, but what exactly does it do? It’s believed to have numerous health benefits and yet there is no proof that consuming aloe vera juice can do anything real for you. Since the taste is also not the best, we wanted to dig into the matter a bit more and answer the question: is drinking aloe vera worth it at all?

Herbal Benefits

“Aloe vera juice is extracted from the green outer leaf of the aloe vera plant,” dietician Rachel Berman tells Real Simple. “It’s made by crushing the plant and filtering out the liquid. Naturally, it tastes bitter and is slightly thicker than plain water.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/B_GfiIIpRb-/

This shouldn’t be confused with aloe vera gel, which is found in the plant’s thick leaves. The gel has been used for treating skin burns and other problems for centuries.

It’s Healthy For You

As Berman notes, the nutritious effects of aloe vera juice come from that of the aloe vera plant. We’re not going to sit here and say it’s an essential thing that everyone must consume, but it certainly doesn’t hurt. If you’re on a health kick and you love herbal remedies, feel free to get your aloe on!

We’ve always been confused about whether coffee is good or bad for our health. Scientists have been disagreeing about this for years, but it seems that there’s finally an end to this debate. According to the 2016 article in Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, moderate coffee consumption has numerous health benefits and very little risks, which is why the authors consider it to be a healthy beverage.

“This qualitative assessment has shown that the health benefits (or null effects) clearly outweigh the risks of moderate coffee consumption in adult consumers for the majority of health outcomes considered. Results from this research may aid further qualitative and quantitative deterministic risk-benefit assessments of coffee consumption,” the study reads.

The study was conducted at Ulster University in the UK where the researchers reviewed over 1,200 previous studies all the way back to the 1970s. They found mixed results, but most of the findings pointed out that three or four cups of coffee per day don’t have bad effects on health. In fact, they offer some health benefits.

One thing the researchers pointed out is that they don’t have enough information to tell if this is true for all other caffeine, like tea and soda, or if it’s specifically true for coffee. But if you’re a coffee fan, you can continue to drink your favorite beverage without worrying!

Following a healthy diet is a great idea, but what happens when your friends want to go to Starbucks? Do you say no and miss the fun or do you call it a cheat day and get the most indulgent thing they have? With these three amazing options, you don’t have to do either of those things. You can still get a delicious drink that stays within your calorie requirements or diet guidelines.

Americano Coffee

Cafe Americano is basically espresso with added hot water instead of milk. It has only 10 calories and it will give you all the benefits of coffee without the extra sugar or fat.

Nonfat Cappuccino

It’s possible to have a frothy, milky coffee in Starbucks without intaking hundreds of calories—just order a nonfat cappuccino! It’s the lowest-calorie milk-based drink they have on the menu and it only has around 60 calories, which makes it easy to fit into any meal plan.

Skinny Vanilla Latte

Craving a vanilla latte? Go for a skinny version that uses only a little bit of frothed milk and a small amount of vanilla syrup, just to add flavor. It can even satisfy your dessert craving when you need that extra energy in the afternoon.

A cup of tea can also help you rehydrate and recover after exercise. Black and green tea specifically are good for recovering muscle strength and reducing soreness, and they are great for relaxing after a long and hard workout.

Water with Fruit Slices

If none of the above mentioned drinks sound interesting and you still don’t want to hydrate with plain water, try adding fruit and vegetable slices to make a refreshing and flavorful drink.

Achieving the best results when working out also depends on the food that you eat and the drinks that you have. This guide will help you figure out what kind of drink to have before a workout. It’s always a smart idea to have a bottle of water with you as well.

Water

Water is the best drink to have at any time. While you’re physically active you sweat and lose fluids. This means that you really need to be hydrated and what better way to do that if not water.

Green Tea

Green tea is extremely rich in antioxidants and it can boost your metabolism to work faster. You will burn more calories if you have a cup half an hour before hitting the gym. This is a drink you can find in any supermarket, just make sure you don’t overdo it.

Whey Protein

A whey protein shake is a great idea before or even after a workout. It delivers the protein your muscles need and it will help you build strong muscles faster. You can choose the type that you like.

Beetroot Juice

Beetroot juice delivers more energy and can help you with endurance during a workout.
