While setting a holistic workout program is crucial to your physical well-being, so too is selecting the right food to accompany it. While there is a wide variety of food that can supply you with the nutrients you need, here are some superfoods that will give you a significant energy boost before your workout.

Spinach

This green vegetable is great at not only boosting your strength but defending your body against harm. Filled with zinc and fiber, spinach helps to detoxify your body and balance your metabolism. Due to containing a high level of antioxidants, spinach will help to decrease muscle soreness and improve recovery after your workout. There are also plenty of recipes that include spinach, from pasta to curry.

Salmon

Protein is an essential part of any bodybuilder or gymgoer’s diet. There is perhaps no healthier source of protein than fish such as salmon. This fish possesses anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids that will reduce post-workout muscle soreness while the protein itself will help to build muscle during your workout.

Chickpeas

Containing both protein and carbohydrates, chickpeas prove beneficial both during and after your workout. They contain a high amount of iron that will help to improve your oxygen flow as well as endurance and overall performance.

While doing the right workout is necessary for improving your fitness, maintaining a balanced diet is just as necessary. In fact, there are certain foods that will give you a much-needed boost if you eat them before your workout. Here are some of the best foods to eat before you start exercising.

Nuts

A hearty source of fats, proteins, and other nutrients, nuts can provide you with a major energy boost before a workout. Pair them with some dried fruits for a healthy dose of carbohydrates as well.

Bananas

Filled with potassium and magnesium, bananas provide you with a beneficial mix of proteins and carbohydrates. If you’re looking for more of a taste sensation, consider making a banana health shake with raisins, dates, and mixed nuts.

Whole Grain Cereals

We all know that we have to eat versatile food from all the food groups if we want to stay healthy and feel good, but could there be advantages to having the same breakfast every single day? Breakfast is important but we don’t always have time to think about it first thing in the morning, so turning it into a routine task can be good for more than one reason.

It Saves Time

By creating a routine around your breakfast, you can save a significant amount of time in the morning. All you need is to make sure you always have the ingredients ready and you’ll speed up the process the more you repeat it, and even do it without thinking after a while. This means you can make your breakfast before waking up completely and you don’t have to make any decisions first thing in the morning.

Better Nutrition

Focusing on nutrition instead of getting creative with flavors for breakfast will allow you to fuel your body with healthy foods without a second thought.

Helps Lose Weight

By having a routine, you can focus on the number of calories and what sources they come from, which can help you lose weight in the long run. A good breakfast will also keep you full and prevent snacking throughout the day.

Eating healthy and nutritious foods before and after your workouts can help maximize your results and boost athletic performance. However, there are some foods that are actually great for this that may take you by surprise. Here are some of the best performance foods that most people don’t realize how helpful they are for working out.

Mushrooms

Using mushrooms only as a topping for pizza or omelets is a huge mistake. These veggies are packed with vitamin D, protein, and fiber so try to add them to your diet by eating grilled mushrooms, creamy mushroom soup, or pasta.

Pickles

Research shows that eating pickles and pickle juice can help athletes reduce muscle pain and cramps. This crunchy and low-calorie food can be a perfect snack, topping, or salad that can make every meal more flavorful.

Potatoes

This vegetable is packed with complex carbohydrates, potassium, fiber, which means it’s great for boosting energy and improving your athletic performance.

Kefir

We all know that kefir is super healthy for our gut health, yet most people don’t eat it very often. This yogurt-like drink is not only good for digestion, it’s also great for reducing inflammation and speeding up recovery after intense workouts.

A good night’s sleep is crucial to a healthy lifestyle. It improves the body’s defenses, helps prevent injury, and improves mental health. But in the modern climate, it is becoming more and more difficult to get a good night’s sleep. Here are five types of food and drink to avoid if you want good quality sleep.

Coffee

It might sound obvious, but coffee is a stimulant and triggers the body to stay awake. Drinking coffee anytime after midday can interrupt your sleep pattern.

Alcohol

People often associate alcohol with sleep. While it is true that alcohol can help you get to sleep, it prevents good quality. Drinking too much alcohol can disrupt your sleep patterns and stifle REM cycles.

Fatty Foods

Fatty foods are hard for your body to digest. Eating them shortly before bed puts enormous strain on your digestive system, which disrupts good quality sleep.

Cheese

It is a common proverb that eating cheese before bed will give you nightmares. In fact, there is some truth to this. Cheese contains the amino acid tyramine which acts as a stimulant, making your body alert at bedtime.

Spicy Food

Like fatty food, spicy food is difficult to digest. This can interrupt sleep patterns, make it hard to drift off, and induce a light sleep rather than a heavy slumber.

No matter how much you try to stay active, there will simply be periods when you can’t work out as much. Regardless of the reason for this is, if you want to stay fit and healthy, you’ll want to adjust your diet. Here are three of our tips for this.

Planning is Crucial

When you work out and stay active, you don’t have to watch everything you eat. But when you’re inactive, it’s crucial to have a plan so you can avoid accidental overeating. A plan will help you buy groceries if you cook at home.

Find New Recipes

Eating healthy is easier when you’re exploring new foods and new flavors. If you find yourself with more free time, that’s the perfect opportunity to cook some new recipes!

Make Healthy Food Obvious

Put fruit on the table, or even better, slice it up and keep in transparent containers in the fridge. This is a way to make it super easy to snack on fruit instead of something unhealthy. Additionally, avoid having high-calorie snacks easily available at home.

Increasing lean body mass is one of the most crucial goals of training, but it’s easier said than done. In order to achieve this goal, you have to switch up your diet and exercise routine. These are some of the most important lifestyle changes you’ll have to make to get it done.

Proper Training

Two or three strength training workouts per week are a must if you want to increase your lean muscle mass. The types of training you should take into consideration are weightlifting, power yoga class, HIIT training, and bodyweight exercises.

Reducing Body Fat

Decreasing body fat can also help your body get leaner, and you can do it by adding cardio workouts to your routine. If you’re switching up your diet, it’s important to only lose fat and not muscle mass. Extreme reductions in your daily caloric intake can lead to a loss of lean body mass, and it’s not recommended.

Switching Your Diet Up

A proper diet also plays a crucial role in the way your lean muscle mass will develop. You should fill up on lean protein, such as poultry, eggs, lean pork, and seafood, eat several servings of fruits and vegetables every day, and limit your consumption of grains.

When you’re training and working out hard it’s important that your body gets all the protein it needs. Protein helps build and maintain muscle, heal wounds, and provides valuable energy. But it’s not always obvious how you can optimize your protein intake for muscle growth. Here are four top tips.

High Protein Foods

The best advice for getting sufficient protein is to eat lots of high protein foods. High protein animal products include eggs, meat, fish, and dairy. For plant-based, you can have lentils, beans, tofu, pumpkin seeds, oats, almonds, chickpeas, or quinoa.

butternut S Q U A S H stir fry with jammy eggs 🥰 [#ad] One of my favourite quick weeknight dinners often includes some sort of stir fry. Inspired by delicious fall veggies, I made this roasted butternut squash stir fry and WOW did this ever turn out amazing. The addition of a runny yolk mixed with a salty/spicy sauce gave it the BEST flavour 🤩 I *try* to ensure all my meals include veggies, complex carbs & proteins. Whenever I’m stuck on what protein to use, I ALWAYS turn to eggs {no matter the time of day!}. They are an easy, affordable & super nutritious addition to any meal 😉 Ingredients: 1 small butternut squash 2 packs ramen noodles @lotusfoodscanada is my fav 2 eggs Green onion {optional} For the sauce: 1/4 cup tamari, 2 tbsp veg broth, 2 tsp rice vinegar, 2 garlic cloves minced, 1 tsp coconut sugar, 1/2 tsp chili flakes, salt & pepper Details: • peel & chop butternut squash, toss with oil, salt & pepper; roast at 400 for 30 mins + 2 min broil • boil water in a small saucepan & add eggs; boil for 5.5 mins, remove & place into an ice bath • combine sauce ingredients • cook ramen noodles per instructions, drain & toss with sauce & squash • peel & slice eggs • divide into bowls & garnish with green onion & chili flakes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #happyandfull #EggsAnytime #eggs #dinner #dinnerideas #dinnertime #healthyeating #healthyrecipes #delicious #easyrecipes #vegetarian #vegetarianrecipes #dairyfree #glutenfree #realfood #wholefoods #homemade #nomnom #eeeeeats #foodporn #yolkporn #eattherainbow #eatyourveggies #nutrition #balaceddiet #recipeshare #foodspiration

Animal or Plant-Based?

Plant-based protein is better for the environment and some would say is more ethical. However, it’s not quite as good at building and maintaining muscle as protein from animal products. If you eat a plant-based diet, the best advice is variety. Eat lots of different kinds of protein-rich foods!

Protein Shakes

Protein shakes are convenient and effective. You can tailor the amounts of protein to your workouts and they are quick and easy. But they are only effective if you have been working out regularly for some weeks.

Don’t Over Do It

Protein shakes aren’t a substitute for real food. They are only a supplement for those athletes you do regular hard workouts. The body cannot digest too much protein. It’s best to stick to high priotein nutritious food.

One of the most important things you need to do when switching to a healthier diet is to think about all the social events you’re typically attending and how your new habits can fit in there. When it comes to barbecues, they can be a tempting situation but there are ways you can make healthy food choices.

Start With Vegetables

If you eat your veggies first, you’ll fill up on them and eat less of the unhealthy dishes later. If you’re making a burger, load it with veggies so it will fill you up while providing all the needed nutrients. Grilled vegetables make an amazing side dish and or the main dish and you already have everything you need to prepare them.

Be Careful With Condiments

Adding plenty of condiments like ketchup, mayonnaise, and barbecue sauce can quickly turn a relatively healthy meal into an unhealthy one. Condiments are often high in calories and have a lot of added sugar, so be mindful when adding them to your food.

Fruit Dessert

Enjoy the barbecue without guilt but consider skipping dessert. You can opt for some fruit instead. In fact, you can grill bananas, pineapple, or peaches to get a delicious and healthy dessert that your friends will enjoy, too.

You’ve decided to eat a healthy diet and started to avoid foods that don’t provide many nutritional benefits—that’s great, congratulations! We’re sure you’ve given it plenty of thought and are already informed about everything you need to know, so we’re now sharing three little-known tips that can help you a lot along the way.

Use Cooking Shortcuts

A healthy diet typically consists of plenty of cooking at home. If you’ve been eating out a lot in the past, this can be overwhelming. That’s why it’s a good idea to use shortcuts whenever you can. When using frozen vegetables you don’t have to wash and clean them, which will save you a lot of time. Learning how to wash up as you cook instead of leaving the dishes for the end will also save you plenty of time and energy.

Think About What You Can Add

You’ve probably started by thinking about all the unhealthy foods you need to eliminate, but it’s better to focus on foods you should be eating. When you start adding healthy options to your diet you’ll quickly realize there’s actually not much room for all the unhealthy snacks and fast food.

Eat What You’re Craving

Let’s be honest—chickpea cookie dough won’t really satisfy your craving for cookies. Allow yourself a treat when you feel like it and move on; this is one of the best ways to have a healthy relationship with food.
