Fall is on its way, and with it comes Sober September. Never heard of the concept? It is similar to Dry January where people are encouraged to give up alcohol for a month. Both follow periods where we may have gone a little heavy on the liquor, with its time to re-focus on our body’s well-being. 

Healthy Evaluation

The trend encourages us to evaluate our personal relationship with alcohol. Are we totally fine without it? Does its absence make us feel a bit strange? You may find that you don’t miss alcohol—or the hangover it brings—at all. Bear in mind that alcohol can be a depressant. Take time to notice how many of your activities involved drinking and whether it just felt part of a social norm and if your relationships change.

A Welcome Detox

Look at the month like a reset. After a boozy summer, it’s not such a bad idea to give your liver a break! Chances are you’ll feel more energized and less sluggish without the alcohol, and the detox can also improve the quality of your skin and sleep.

Engage in Other Activities

If alcohol is a method for you to de-stress, look for alternative ways that you can relieve tension, especially after a long day. Go for a walk, hit the gym, read a book, or work on a project you’ve been meaning to get to. Doing Sober September with friends and family can also offer a great support system.

Yoga is a mystical exercise form that offers many benefits to the body, soul, and mind.  Here are just a few:

It’s about you

As with most other exercise forms, yoga isn’t a competition. Yoga is a work in progress.  It’s about challenging yourself to reach further or stretch longer, etc.

It’s not all about bends and stretches

Part of yoga is about bending and flexibility.  But what needs to be flexible is your mind and how you approach yoga as a discipline.

Use props

The props available in yoga such as straps or blocks do not make you less advanced than others.  Using them means you are aware of your body’s limits.

You can take a break

No one will judge you if you assume the Child’s Pose when it becomes intense or if you choose to have a water break.

It’s not always easy

Some of the poses in yoga are hard.  Be prepared to fail before you succeed, just like everyone else.

It’s not just about your body

Yoga creates a sense of inner peace and mindfulness that other exercise forms just don’t.

Actress Halle Berry has always been a huge fan of fitness and her diet helps support her health and well-being. Since being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 22, Berry has stayed away from certain foods and she sat down with Women’s Health to talk about the foods you won’t find in her diet.

Sugar

Before she was diagnosed with diabetes, Berry loved sugar. The actress used to start her day with sugary cereal and always had a candy bar with her. After being diagnosed, she stopped eating sugar completely and within a few weeks, her cravings disappeared. She only eats sweats on her kid’s birthdays and she snacks on low-sugar fruits.

White Carbs

She quickly learned that the body breaks down refined carbs into sugar, so she stopped eating them to manage her diabetes. She doesn’t eat rice, pasta, or bread. After cutting out white carbs, she swapped high-carb foods with low-carb alternatives and healthy fats. Instead of eating mashed potatoes or pasta, she eats cauliflower mash with butter and salt and zucchini noodles.

Conventional Wine

As a wine lover, she didn’t want to to completely give up wine, so she found a natural, organic alternative that contains no added sugars or chemicals and they don’t have as much sugar or alcohol as the average bottle of wine.
